of the T1delandS on the Western Coast of the Unlted States The lawyer for the State of Cal1forn1a was maklng h1s frnal speech He was a short man wmth a feroclous mustache The lawyer was Gus Gaynett a fellow graduate from the Sen1or Class of 1953 T1me was passlng fast andI wanted to V1S1t Houston Texas where the annual Southwestern Agrlcultural Conventlon was be1ng held Iclosed my eyes anc began to concentrate on Houston Texas Whenl opened them I was 1n a balcony overlooklnga large hall Pres1dents from every cotton company 1n Texas were the re Then the cha1rman of the convent1on stepped up to the rostrum to call the meet1ng to order He opened the meet1ng w1th a prayer I sat down and rema1ned l1sten1ng unt1l he flrushed the prayer The prayer brought back memor1es from my hlgh school days It was the prayer we reclted before we began our morn1ng classes I took a closer look at the cha1rman of the con ventlon He was Raul T1Jer1na who was now a promlnent Texas cattleman and arglcultural expert The cha1rman asked for the new buslness of the convent1on to be dlscussed Immedlately the three representat1ves from the R10 Grande Valley stood up to d1scuss the problem of equal wages for all cottonplckers F1rst the cha1rman recogmzed Jalme Vlllanueva the owner of a large cotton company ln Brownsvllle Apparently the other two representat1ves from the Valley d1d not agree w1th V1llanueva The Cha1rman then recogruzed Angel Pllega and Oscar Cano whowere owners of a r1valcottonf1rm1n Matamoros r op1n1ons t e ent1re convent1on was 1n a pandemonlum I glanced at mywatch and I not1ced that I had only f1ve mxnutes to remaln 1n the future Before leavlng the future I wanted to v1s1t my home town once more I began to concentrate aga1n on Brownsv111e Thls t1me I was stand1ng on the r1ver bank behlnd the old Chamber of Commerce bu1ld1ng I was look1ng across the r1ver 1nto gay old Mex1co A large swanky bu1ld1ng stood out It was the Matamoros Cafe now one of the largest n1ght clubs 111 Northern Mex1co At the bottom of the slgn overlooklng the n1ght club was ' L V1llarreal prop I checked my watch and I only hada few seconds left I f1gured that the professor could send me back 1nto the future some other t1me 1n order that I m1ght know my own future Then lt happened I blacked out aga1n My head started sp1nn1ng 1n a c1rcle After lt stopped I looked around to greet the pro fessor but I couldn't see two feet 1n fro'nt of me I started to yell and 1n no t1me at all a man came and carr1ed me out of the smoke There were f1remen all around me I 1mmed1ate1y 1nqu1red about my friend the professor One of the flremen told me that the professor had d1ed 1n the f1re and that I was lucky to get out al1ve That started me th1nk1ng D1d I ever leave the present and go nto the future or d1d the mach1ne explode when the professor threw the SW1tCl'17 That was one quest1on that I could never answer Henry Valentlno After Pliego and Cano expressed thei ' ' , h ' ' .
