of the T1delandS on the Western Coast of the Unlted States The lawyer for the State of Cal1forn1a was maklng h1s frnal speech He was a short man wmth a feroclous mustache The lawyer was Gus Gaynett a fellow graduate from the Sen1or Class of 1953 T1me was passlng fast andI wanted to V1S1t Houston Texas where the annual Southwestern Agrlcultural Conventlon was be1ng held Iclosed my eyes anc began to concentrate on Houston Texas Whenl opened them I was 1n a balcony overlooklnga large hall Pres1dents from every cotton company 1n Texas were the re Then the cha1rman of the convent1on stepped up to the rostrum to call the meet1ng to order He opened the meet1ng w1th a prayer I sat down and rema1ned l1sten1ng unt1l he flrushed the prayer The prayer brought back memor1es from my hlgh school days It was the prayer we reclted before we began our morn1ng classes I took a closer look at the cha1rman of the con ventlon He was Raul T1Jer1na who was now a promlnent Texas cattleman and arglcultural expert The cha1rman asked for the new buslness of the convent1on to be dlscussed Immedlately the three representat1ves from the R10 Grande Valley stood up to d1scuss the problem of equal wages for all cottonplckers F1rst the cha1rman recogmzed Jalme Vlllanueva the owner of a large cotton company ln Brownsvllle Apparently the other two representat1ves from the Valley d1d not agree w1th V1llanueva The Cha1rman then recogruzed Angel Pllega and Oscar Cano whowere owners of a r1valcottonf1rm1n Matamoros r op1n1ons t e ent1re convent1on was 1n a pandemonlum I glanced at mywatch and I not1ced that I had only f1ve mxnutes to remaln 1n the future Before leavlng the future I wanted to v1s1t my home town once more I began to concentrate aga1n on Brownsv111e Thls t1me I was stand1ng on the r1ver bank behlnd the old Chamber of Commerce bu1ld1ng I was look1ng across the r1ver 1nto gay old Mex1co A large swanky bu1ld1ng stood out It was the Matamoros Cafe now one of the largest n1ght clubs 111 Northern Mex1co At the bottom of the slgn overlooklng the n1ght club was ' L V1llarreal prop I checked my watch and I only hada few seconds left I f1gured that the professor could send me back 1nto the future some other t1me 1n order that I m1ght know my own future Then lt happened I blacked out aga1n My head started sp1nn1ng 1n a c1rcle After lt stopped I looked around to greet the pro fessor but I couldn't see two feet 1n fro'nt of me I started to yell and 1n no t1me at all a man came and carr1ed me out of the smoke There were f1remen all around me I 1mmed1ate1y 1nqu1red about my friend the professor One of the flremen told me that the professor had d1ed 1n the f1re and that I was lucky to get out al1ve That started me th1nk1ng D1d I ever leave the present and go nto the future or d1d the mach1ne explode when the professor threw the SW1tCl'17 That was one quest1on that I could never answer Henry Valentlno After Pliego and Cano expressed thei ' ' , h ' ' . He was arguing with the pitcher I looked over on the Yankees side of the field and right next to the dug out I saw a fam1l1ar figure No it wasn't Marylin Monroe It was none other than that of Leonel Maldonado He appeared to be the next batter up The way he was swinging the bats I thought sure that he would knock a home run when his turn to bat came but instead he handed the bats to anotherplayer and returned to the dug out I looked at my program once more and at the bottom of the Yankee team was Leonel Maldonado Bat boy I had no time to watch the game so I began concentrating on the Empire State Building I found a newspap e r at the entrance and I took it with me to the observatlon tower Icould see for approximately f1ftYI'I'111CS around I wanted to get a closer view of things so I got a telescope and began peeking through the windows of a nearbybuilding Iwas trying to read the writing o one of the windows but I had to focus the telescope before I could make it out Across the windowwas written Dr Edward.I Camero Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Throat Specialist The shades were drawn so I could not see my old classmate I tried other windows but the shades were drawn on all of them I began reading my newspaper and on the front page was the picture of a Jet plane and two other guys standing beside it I was always inte re sted in aeronautics so I read what was printed under the picture Albert Fernandez, latest American Jet Ace, and hismechanic Joe Vela, make finalpreparations before taking off I turned to the last page in the newspaper and an advertise ment caught my eye It had the picture ofa large bakery At the bottom of the picture was A Maldonado's Bakery, Bakers of the best sweet bread in Ne paper but Iwas disappointed because I could not find the newspaper staff Ihad no sooner finrshed read1n0 the newspaper than I heard a band playing Sure enough there was aparade passing through the street below I used my telescope to get abetterview Alarge banner was carried infront of the parade Across the banner was written Budwe1ser Centennial Begins Today ' The famous Budweiser horses were leading the parade This time they were driven by the president of the Budweiser Corporation Ifocussed my telescope to get a better view of the president I was so surprised that I dropped mf telescope The President of the Budweiser corporation was none other than Manuel Barreda There were a few more places Iwanted to v1s1t and one of them was Washington D C I closed my eyes and began concentrating on the nat1on's capital When I opened my eyes I was standing in front of the Capitol Building People were rushing 1n and out of the building I walked into the hall where the House of Representatives met The session was in full swing and they appeared to be voting for a new Speaker of the House I looked on the chart where the votes were being marked to find the names of the nominees One of the nominees was Henry B Cabbott from Alabama and the other was Gail Johnson from the Lone Star State of Texas I wanted to V1S1t the Supreme Court before leaving Washington so I decided to walk the few blocks to the Court House Just then a long black limousine drove up on the other side of the street A chauffeur in a uniform was behind the wheel In the back seat was a fam1l1ar face No tcouldn't be' It was Charles Gonzalez Was hea Congressman or did he just rent the car? I had no time to solve that mystery so I went 1nto the court house I walked pa s t the guards at the door without their even known1ng it A poster informed me as to which case was being debated It was the question 30 . . , , , .
