Getting a taste of Latin from her fellow classmate, Peggy Sylvester, is Sophomore Margie Knauf. Both girls are in Sister Rita Catherine s second year Latin class. Foreign languages . . . played a major role in the SJA curricu¬ lum this year. Four years of Spanish and French were again offered, as well as four years of Latin. In the first and second years of study, the girls learned the basic skills they needed and in the third and fourth years they expanded their vocabulary by reading plays and short stories. The girls also used the language laboratory to help them in their studies. Spanish students added variety to their classes by presenting various skits. Fourth year students read plays, short stories, and the book Don Quixote to broaden their knowledge of Spanish culture. The preparation and presentation of dialogues helped French students ac¬ quire further knowledge of the lan¬ guage. The girls got into the ( hristmas spirit by singing French Christmas car¬ ols in class. They also had a chance to listen to French pop” songs in the lan¬ guage lab. Latin also had a place in the Lan¬ guage [department. The girls in Ad¬ vanced Latin studied Roman Classics while Sister Rita Catherine finally con¬ vinced her first and second year stu¬ dents that Latin is not dead — it’s alive and well in her classroom. 19
