Juniors could take literature, as they used to do, or branch out into different topics. Seniors were able to take the tradi¬ tional World Literature course for ei¬ ther one year or one semester, or elect another area of study which interested them. Among the new courses offered were Modern Literature, Negro in American Literature, Creative Writing, and Shakespeare. Freshmen and sophomores remained with their usual courses: poetry, short stories, and drama, including Shake¬ speare’s The Merchant of Venice. Joey Schumacher searches the shelves of the library for books which are helpful to her in writing a term paper for her English class. Carol Steinfeldt exemplifies the development oi good study habits by using the resource center to help her complete one of her assignments. Jenny Myers and Mary 13 lien hesperance help their history class cele¬ brate the last week of school by providing a cake and games New social studies classes were added to the school pro¬ gram. Some of the additions were one- semester courses. Seniors had a wider variety of sub¬ jects to choose from to fill their needed social studies credit. Some of the cours¬ es were Russian Studies, World 1 iisto- Current Issu es, Sociology, and Psy¬ chology. The girls who were studying China in their World History 11 class had an authentic Chinese meal. The American Problems classes studied the presidential candidates, primaries, and campaigns of the 1972 election. Freshmen studied World History I to gain a greater knowledge of foreign countries. Students took part in creat¬ ing projects that helped them to under¬ stand the different periods of history which they had studied. Juniors studied American History to see their country in action from the be¬ ginning of its existance until present times. Beth Janssen looks for her place in the world. 15 Different aspects . . of religion appeared this year at the Academy. Room 200 was redesigned and converted into a resource center. In this center students from senior mar¬ riage classes to freshman religion cours¬ es bund a variety of resource materials. Several students volunteered to spend their study halls in the resource « center, serving as librarians, checking out books and helping students to find the books they needed. The sophomore religion classes were divided into four quarters: Sacraments, Doctrine, Scripture, and Christian Ac¬ tion. During the quarter in which the girls studied Christian Action, they vis¬ ited the people at the Odd ellows Home once a week. The junior and senior classes were divided into semester courses. Mar¬ riage was required of seniors, and mo¬ rality was required of juniors. Optional courses included Philosophy I, Philoso¬ phy II, CCD, Religions of the World, New Testament, and Religion Through the Arts. Girls of Mrs. PahPs fourth hour religion class gather around I aisy Ander¬ son as she sings some songs from her repertoire. ( ' hristmas cheer by answering children ' s letters to Santa Claus. 16 Carrying canned drinks to be used for a Halloween party, Sally Jaekels, Mol¬ ly l ey, Kitty Kenndy, and Theresa Hoogland depart for the Odd Fellows f lome. Sally Gilliame loads up her tray and helps serve at the picnic given for the members of the Odd Fel¬ lows Home. % Sophomore Jo Van Fee discovers through experience the benefits of the language lab for her French II class. Through the use of tapes and records, students get audio representation of language pronunciation and dia¬ lects. Filmstrips also provide historical background. 18 Mary Menard, Sue Van Egeren, and Jane Warpin- ski enact a chapter from Don Quixote for their Spanish IVclassmates. Getting a taste of Latin from her fellow classmate, Peggy Sylvester, is Sophomore Margie Knauf. Both girls are in Sister Rita Catherine s second year Latin class. Foreign languages . . . played a major role in the SJA curricu¬ lum this year. Four years of Spanish and French were again offered, as well as four years of Latin. In the first and second years of study, the girls learned the basic skills they needed and in the third and fourth years they expanded their vocabulary by reading plays and short stories. The girls also used the language laboratory to help them in their studies. Spanish students added variety to their classes by presenting various skits. Fourth year students read plays, short stories, and the book Don Quixote to broaden their knowledge of Spanish culture. The preparation and presentation of dialogues helped French students ac¬ quire further knowledge of the lan¬ guage. The girls got into the ( hristmas spirit by singing French Christmas car¬ ols in class. They also had a chance to listen to French pop” songs in the lan¬ guage lab. Latin also had a place in the Lan¬ guage [department. The girls in Ad¬ vanced Latin studied Roman Classics while Sister Rita Catherine finally con¬ vinced her first and second year stu¬ dents that Latin is not dead — it’s alive and well in her classroom. 19 Patti Kryshak, a first year typing student, circles her mistakes after a timed writing and wonders what affect an F will have on her typing grade. Juniors and seniors . . . participated in business courses: Short¬ hand, Typing I and II, Bookkeeping and Office Practice. In Shorthand I the girls learned to recognize the characters, while second year students tried to translate the symbols into meaningful phrases. Members of the Bookkeeping class learned how to balance books and keep financial records accurate. Typing classes practiced to gain both speed and accuracy. The Typing I stu¬ dents learned the basics of typing, while the Typing II class strove for increased speed. Typing II and Office Practice class continued using the typewriter, but also expanded to the adding machine and the dictaphone. In a unit on copy mak¬ ing t he girls typed recipes and ran t hem off in order to make a recipe book. 20 Jackie Webb grins while standing in front of the blackboard on which she has written a message to her teacher. Janet Edelbeck, Patti Loch, Lynn Hermans, Mary Jane Pigeon, and Debbie Cootway display their aw’ard-winning bookkeeping projects. Jeanne Hart practices her skills at the dictaphone in the business room. Terri Stone reflects on the results of a team effort during a visit to St. Nor- bert College with her computer math class. Janice Conway, one of the Algebra I [-Trigonometry students, takes a unipac test in the hall outside of her classroom. Students at SJA . . . could broaden their knowledge of math in a variety of courses this year. The freshmen could take Algebra I, in which they learned the basic skills of mathematics. Sophomores studied geometry or al¬ gebra. If they studied geometry during the summer, they could take another subject, Algebra II-Trigonometry. Juniors and seniors had a larger range of math courses to choose from. A com¬ puter course was offered, in which the students learned how to write a com¬ puter program. During this semester course they made a field trip to St. Norbert College to run their programs through a computer and see how they worked. Some juniors and seniors enrolled in the Math Analysis class. During this course each girl in the class got to teach her classmates for one day. Other courses offered were Math Reasoning and Probability and Statistics. Amy VVarpinski shows her classmates how to con¬ struct a geometric kite. 23 This year the Science . . . Department included two new science courses and an extended general chem¬ istry course. Because of the difficulty encountered in using different chemistry books for different class levels, the Science De¬ partment decided to drop Chem Study and have all classes use the same text. As a result, more juniors had the op¬ portunity to take chemistry. Physical Science allowed students who did not wish to take either physics or chemistry to take a science course. The class consisted of five sections of lab work: predicting, matter, energy, technology, and the interaction of ener¬ gy and matter. A one-semester advanced biology course was offered to seniors this year. Two sophomore biology students, Maria Zehren and Sue Warden, entered projects in the WBA ' Science Fair. Maria won second place in the Biology section of the Senior High Division with her project “How Clean Is Your Kitchen?”. Sue won third place in the same section with “Chemical Effects on Plants.” 24 Connie Wagner, a chemistry student, is neutralizing acid by means o:: a buret. The chemistry class participated in experiments which helped them discover the world around them. As part of their biology course, Mary Przybelski and Diane Derbique spent class time dissecting a frog to study its anatomy. Jo Ann Hein practices weighing materials on her general physical science class. Is Kay Webb daydreaming or is she getting ready for a physics experiment? In their gym class Vicki De Cleene and Debbie Donarski, Sue Allen and Carol Ehlinger, and Jayette Schroeder and Paula Bourassa patiently wait at the starting line for a signal to begin the tough competition. A group of students irom the first hour sophomore gym class skated at Astor Park this winter as part of their second semester curriculum. I displaying the form of an expert archer, Vicki De Cleene takes careful aim at the target. 26 Carol Ehlinger, a member of the Frantics, practices dribbling a basketball during her first hour gym class. Paula Bourassa demonstrates how to do a walk-over, a gymnastic exercise, to her classmates during second year gym class. Providing a break ... in the weekly routine of many students were the physical education classes. Freshmen took part in a variety o: sports, including baseball, archery, basketball, trampoline, and many others. Sophomores shared in similar activi¬ ties, with the addition of adventures to a nearby ice skating rink. Juniors and seniors were able to par¬ ticipate in the advanced gym classes during their lunch hours. These stu¬ de nts used their energy by bowling at Bay Bowl and swimming at the YMCA Pool. Gym students took part in the sem¬ iannual physical fitness tests and learned the importance of teamwork and physical fitness in their daily lives. Ticky Beno, with the ad¬ vanced gym class, swims at the YMCA during lunch. Homemaking classes . . . were shortened this year to semester courses. In the Home Management course, the classes worked on projects according to the particular season they were in. The Foods classes, getting into the spirit of the season, made cookies and a number of other goodies for Christmas. For the Christmas concert, girls in the sewing classes helped to make some of the formals for the Glee Club. Girls also participated in the style show sponsored by the Parents Club. At the style show, “Fashion Elections’ , Cindy Holznecht and Becky But¬ ler modeled the same kind of dress but of different materials. • Pr? Displays were set up in the halls where students passing on the way to class could stop and admire art work in many different forms and materials. 30 The Easter theme banners used in the convent chap¬ el were designed by Sharon Buth and Janet Horan. During art class, supervised by Mrs. Dix, Janet Horan and Maureen Sloan work creatively with pastels. Practicing techniques learned during her art class, Sue Deterville watches her ceramic creation take shape. Variations in art . . . provided for three different art courses this year, all t aught by Mrs. Dix. Fresh¬ men could enroll in the Art Apprecia¬ tion course which involved viewing films o: different aspects of art, discuss¬ ing artists’ works, and doing art work themselves. The freshmen could also take a course in Film Appreciation. In this class they viewed films and learned techniques used in film-making. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors could take Art I. They learned how to sketch, weave, make pottery, sculpture, collages, and stitchery. Posters were designed and submitted for Brotherhood Week. Carol Gerhard received first prize. Those who had already taken Art I could advance to Art II. The girls were involved in printmaking, figure draw¬ ing, and in other more complex materi¬ als and techniques. Some of the fin¬ ished products the girls made were dis¬ played in the library and in other parts of the school. 31 Tina Mongin, wishing for luck, crosses her fingers during her solo at the Christmas Concert, while the other members of the Madrigals listen. SJA musical groups . . . included those students interested in improving or displaying their musical ability. For the freshmen there was the Freshman Chorus. In addition to study¬ ing music in class each day, they took part in the annual Christmas Concert at the Premontre Auditorium. This year the concert was held on two nights instead of one. The Sophomore Chorus, dressed in capes and muffs, also performed in the Christmas Concert. The juniors and seniors gifted in mu¬ sic could sing in Glee Club and the Madrigals. Selected students per¬ formed under the direction of Sister Ellen Cecilia for a tape of Christmas songs for TV. Members of all choruses could also try out and participate in the production of the opera Hansel and Gretel.
