Academy supporters, the L.l. game raced ro an exciting finish with the Academy’s stunning fourth quarter victory. Dizzied with the level of St. J.A.'s success, the students began ro celebrate with a few brave souls and a small motorcade going on a victory tour of Lyndonville. Continuing for into the night — or the Victory Donee ond elsewhere — Academy students participated with o spirit of pride in themselves ond in Sr. J.A. Winter Carnival Success! LET THE GAMES BEGIN! With these words. Winter Carnival Queen Lorrie Rives initiated the annual battle to determine which class should reign os champion of these winter events. Students and faculty together exhausted themselves solely for the purpose of having fun. As the week of Carnival approached, a mid-winter thaw cleared the ground — it looked like a weekend of Ultimate mud-frisbee and Slipping contests. The carnival, however, was blessed not only with a sudden snowfall, but with sunshiny weather warm enough for a few to venture out in shorts to participate. A new event arose from the incredible student attendance and melting snow — snowball fights between and among the rival parries. Under the new leadership of first year music director Alan Rowe, an enthusiastic and energetic band performed with gusto throughout the year. Bringing with his arrival many new ideas and songs, Mr. Rowe has proved to be a positive asset to the band. One ideo was the band's playing of more contemporary and popular songs including Beat It, Uptown Girl, and the favorite We Got the Beat. This program was designed to allow band members to gain broader experience playing with different people under different leaderships. Several members of the Academy band also fried our for All-State ond Districts with Auburn Currier being accepted to the ALL NEW ENGLAND BAND on the flute. For anyone who enjoys ploying on instrument ond having fun while doing it, the bond is o definite Go”! 47 The Ultimate Authority President of the Student Body Manon Brewer, in her campaign speech last spring, vowed to moke the student council o more active port of the school and to serve os o more effective representative for the student body. Under her leadership, the council has indeed moved toward these goals. A working committee has been formed that meets regularly with Headmaster Mayo to discuss the dress code, o topic that always seems to interest the student body. Other important issues that the Council has addressed ore the possibility of o four-day exom period, exempting students in AP courses from exams and the possibility of moking o full royol court for homecoming, to include a king. The Council meets every week and, with this renewed emphasis on active involvement in the school, should be on important organization that truly represents the student body. Outdoor Living trips provide great experience for learning to live in and with the outdoors. The students really enjoy these trips os they provide a way to enjoy the wilderness with friends. Dual meets against area rivals like L.I. and Littleton prepare the harriers for the more important races later on. Many rimes, eorly in the season, a runner will think to himself os he runs in the rain or ninety degree heot, Is this really worth it? The answer comes with the first improvement — five seconds is shoved off the time, or the runner moves up two places in the standings. Ultimately, the personal satisfaction of improving one's self enables the runners to endure the agony of do feet. The season's end approaches by October, and with it, comes the Dig Meets. Intense inrra-ream rivalries spring up os two or more people compere for the lost spots on the seven-man ream. The Store Meet brings the season to o close, often in arctic temperatures, mud ond even snow. Despire nor winning a game, this group of girls never lost rheir enthusiasm. They increased their goal total from two the previous year to five this year, and gained much needed experience. For the first rime in four years, the field hockey team was able to assemble a Junior Varsity ream. This ream supplied the younger members of the program with vital playing rime and experience. Seniors Louisa Viles and Kelley Benoit provided leadership and encouragement while setting a good example of how much determination and guts a field hockey player should have.
