Doors Dedication 12 Faculty 13 Seniors 39 Underclassmen 69 Sports 85 Clubs 107 Activities 129 Index Ads 139 LAMP Vol. XXXV Some choose to shut the door tight on their past. And proceed to the future, no backward glance cast. Others seem stuck in their youthful ways. Pretending they still live in the Good Old Days. 2 Portal To The Past But the wisest among us continue ahead, Yet stay tied to the past by a slender thread. The pages that follow will be such a tie. Come! Enter inside as the doors open wide . . . Knocking at the Door Starchy shirt and itchy neck We cannot know what to expect. Up to the balcony we stumble Feeling our nerve begin to crumble. Teachers hover on every side le dare not talk for fear they'll chide. This place is old and serious But we are young and delirious. On The Threshold Sloppy clothes, our hair's a mess, We don't give a hoot for a code of dress. We know it all, the Golden Rules And how to break them, we're no fools! We're Sophomores , one year in; It's a game to get under the teachers' skin. Most fun of all (now that we're so wise) Is making fun of the little guys! 6 Just Inside What's this?! Is that a blazer he wears? But he used to buy his clothes at Zayres! Yes, folks, by now we've figured out The rules we always sought to flout. We haven't the time left anyway To spend on silly, idle play. Our third year here is the hardest yet; The time we've wasted we now regret. Leaving Already? Casual are the clothes we don As Senioritis fast comes on. Against the dread disease we travail; Most of us win, some of us fail. We're leaders of our school today. In classes, work; in sport and play. We have less time than ever For all of our endeavors. Career and colleges: concern 1; Schoolwork often stays undone. Then one day we find it's June And leave this haven all too soon. 11 The Class Of 1984 Proudly Dedicates This Yearbook To . . . Mr. John H. Conover Thank you for your never ending wit and patience. Together with your clever palindromes, rainbow-striped suspenders, and green holly bow tie, you make that horrible world of mathematics much more bearable. Your extensive knowledge of almost anything we can think of constantly amazes us. Thank you for all that you have done for us ... we will never forget you! 12 The People At The Top The highlight of the Administration this year is the return of Assistant Headmaster Mr. Gary Moore. After a year's leave of absence, serving as the Fish and Game Commissioner for the state of Vermont, Mjr. Moore decided to return and resume his duties at the Academy, much to our gain (and the Governor's loss). Headmaster Mayo is, of course, delighted to have his right hand man back at the Academy, and Mr. Moore is delighted to be back. It's fun working at the Academy, he explains. Mr. Mayo and the rest of the administration have been busy improving the Academy's day-to-day operation, as well as making ambitious plans for the future. Revisions in the factored grading system required a great deal of discussion and thought, effort which has paid off. The most exciting topic for consideration has been the proposed field house, which would greatly enlarge the Academy's indoor sports facility. Headmaster Mayo realizes that this is truly an ambitious untertaking, but he reasons If we can afford it, this facility will be a tremendous resource for the Academy and the community- Mr. Bernier L. Makes you think, doesn't it! Day-to-day, we can't think of a more important job at the Academy. Thank you, custodians; we do appreciate you. Our Men in Green are: Robert Towle, head custodian and adviser to the bowling league; Warren Penniman, custodian for Ranger Hall and the Breezeway; Wesley Locke, keeps Colby Hall spotless; Bernie Page, tends to Severance and Fuller Halls; Gordon Willey, takes care of the gym; Toni Handy, cleans the first floor of Streeter; Rachel Norway, housekeeper for the dorms; and Van Culver and Ralph Aussiker, bus drivers. In addition, Howard Churchill takes care of heating and plumbing problems, Michael Bugbee is the Academy's electrician and Mel Pierce takes care of all general maintenance on campus. Above: Wesley Locke, vacuums the rug in Mrs. Currier's office; Mr. Howard Churchill (Top Right) the Academy's plumbing and heating man, helps Mr. Jerry Peck (Right), maintenance supervisor construct a janitors closet in Streeter Hall. 18 Food For Thought Students sometimes make jokes about our school food, but when we're in college we'll wish we could come back to it. The dedication of Mr. Aja and his staff brings us good, hot food, every day of the school year. In addition, before a holiday the food service gets together with the Culinary Arts students to prepare a veritable feast of fresh goodies for us, a really special treat found in almost no other school. Deborah Bengston, general kitchen help and salad-maker; Dawnna Clifford, first cook; Janice Gui-bard, salads and server; Jacquiline Hackett, baker and server; Elisa Handy, kitchen help; Patricia Hudson, supper preparer and general help; Madeline Moulton, works with Culinary Arts students; Tammy Nelson, cashier and general; Hictorine Osborne, breakfast maker and general; Regina Payette, Cook and general; Marjoice Reed, bookeeper and cashier. Professor Allen Gaylord, an old Dartmouth friend of Mr. Ashley, read the naughty tale to a captive audience of about 50 students, interspersing his reading with just a smattering of explanation of the finer points for us initiates. Mr. Ashley also took his Humanities class to view the Orozco murals at Dartmouth. The famous painting depicts the history of North America, from the exploitation of the natives to the effects of industrialization. Still, it hardly compares to the mural of Famous Scenes from Literature on Mr. Ashley's classroom wall. Mr. Brescia's Writing Techniques classes got to (or had to) use the Scripsit word processor for a second year. The addition of disc drives and more Scripsit discs simplified the process of term-paper writing, and greatly reduced the number of computer-eaten term papers. 21 Mucho De Nuevo This year, Mr. Majuri replaces Mr. Robert Trottier as head of the Language Department, since Mr. Trottier is on sabbatical. Mr. O'Brien fills the vacancy left by Mr. Sotolongo, bringing with him new books and a fresh approach to the Spanish program. Mr. Leslie Moore taught Latin for a time while Mr. Newell experienced Rome. (But then, that's ex post facto.) Mr. Gerald Prutsman has joined the French department as one of the Academy's fellows. Though the Language Department tries its hardest to remain serious, classes occasionally stray into taco- and crepe-making sessions. Oh well, we probably learn more then, anyway. C'est la vie.'' Much More Than Just History The social studies department instructs students in more areas than just history. Mr. Chouinard, in his course You and the Law teaches students about the nation's legal system and how it affects the people. Mr. Chouinard invites knowledgeable guest speakers to his class and compliments his classroom activities with informative field trips. Miss Riley takes her anthropology students to the State University of New York at Plattsburg to work on skeletons and visit anthropology related exhibits. Mr. Daniele teaches his Contemporary Civilization students the wiles of the stock market, with students making (or losing) mock fortunes as they play the blue chips. Of course, there are many history courses — all juniors are found in U.S. History — but that's just one of St. Johnsbury Academy's myriad social studies offerings. 26 Mr. Louis V. After so many years at the Academy, Mr. Conover finally made it. Our peppiest professor can now rally third floor Colby to new heights. Mr. Racenet is an initiate to the math department, though not, of course, to the Academy. Our great football coach has left the science department to teach Elementary Algebra I and II, and Applied Math. Mrs. Rolfe teaches a new college credit course this year, A. P. Computer Science. The computer room has continued to swell, pushing Mr. Brescia out of his room to allow for more Apple computers and a better Pascal curriculum. For instance, Mr. Vinton brings light to optics by asking his students to unscrew an imaginary lightbulb. Mr. Roosa's students develop the best memories in the school to cope with his oft-bizarre daily quizzes. Dandelions are an annual pest to gardeners, but to the Biology department they present a golden opportunity for studying population growth, and for students, an excuse to walk on Academy lawns. The restructured Science Department offers the gamut of courses, from classes in physics and chemistry to a Freshman biology class. In addition, AP courses in these three subjects allow students to receive college credit if they ace the Advanced Placement Exam held in May. Come visit our gang in Ranger! 31 Help For Students With Special Needs Through patience and skill, the Diversified Occupation teachers instruct their students daily. In Pre-vocational training, social skills, and on-the-job training, the teachers prepare their students to face the world on their own. The students also prepare for future life by learning everyday skills such as sewing, home nursing, and childcare, under the direction of these dedicated teachers. Mrs. Jean A. After adding a computer to the Library's set of tools, she set her sights on expanding the paperback stacks to get more students reading. Her most noble effort is in arranging for authors to hold discussions on their works. As sole audio-visual expert at the Academy, Mr. Leszc-zynski plays a vital role in the school's operation. With increased use of visual aids, Mr. Leszczynski and the A-V Club must move faster. Body Builders Miss Jeanne Desrochers Family Living School Nurse Outdoor Living Advisor Mr. Bruce B. These classes also carry added benefits: the auto body repair class means free garage service for faculty and friends, and the graphic arts class provides free poster-making for clubs and special events. Maybe you've wondered why you've had to inhale dust every time you pass by Fairbanks Cottage this year. Well, instead of building a house on Waterman Circle, the Building Trades class stays at home this year to enjoy eviscerating (and refurbishing) the Art Building. As the only other option would have been razing, rebuilding makes a lot of sense — especially with the use of free labor. 34 Mr. David M. I Make It Your Business A Familiar Face In A New Department This year Mrs. Byrne took an amotion (as she put it, to differentiate from a promotion or demotion) to take charge of the new Resource Study Skills Department. She now acts as tutor, advocate, mentor, counselor, organizer, and official mother to a handful of new students who need some help scholastically or socially. She is also responsible for training the faculty to work better with these pupils. Having completed extensive studies in these fields, and with her sympathetic disposition, Mrs. Byrne is the perfect person for this job, a job that desperately needs to be done. This year's Business Department, under the direction of Mrs. Nancy Bellefeuille, prepares students to enter the business related job market. Through typing class, accounting, and APEX, students learn a saleable skill, or proficiency necessary for college life. The instructors have had to make the best of a room in Streeter Hall, but the wait will be worth it. When the Art building is finished in about a year, it will hold facilities for various crafts for which students have shown interest. Classes could be offered in pottery, weaving, sculpture and other arts and crafts, and the existing art classes will undoubtedly enjoy improvement from the larger rooms and new equipment. Catalogues and descriptive information from almost every prominent college help students select the college that best suits their needs. With Miss Eagan at the helm, the guidance department staffs three counselors to assist students with any questions and to prepare recommendations. What pages do all the seniors and most of the students usually turn to first? Why, the superlatives of course! Every senior anxiously leafs through the pages looking for their picture, ranging from Most Likely To Succeed to Class Partiers. Superlatives are a tradition that has been carried on for many years. The people are chosen by their senior class. Sometime during the year, a sheet is handed out to all seniors with the categories on it. The seniors will then write out the names of the people they think are most appropriate. The sheet is handed in to the yearbook staff and the votes are confidentially tabulated. Superlatives are supposed to be kept secret until the yearbooks have arrived, but, unfortunately, the secret has a habit of leaking out. So whether you like your superlative or not, remember it was your fellow classmates who chose you. Out A' Towners When most people think about the people who enroll in the Academy, there are two obvious categories — the Dormies and the Townies. However, there is another category that hasn't been recognized — the students from surrounding areas. These areas include Waterford, Monroe, Lunenburg, Barnet, Peacham, Passumpsic, Danville, Gilman, Walden, Mclndoes Falls, Burke, and yes, even Lyndon! Townies and dormies alike don't realize the contribution that these people make to this institution. These students make up a large part of the honor roll and the athletic teams. Unfortunately, few people appreciate the effort that these students put in to becoming a part of our school life. During some of the worst winter storms, they try their best to make it to school, sometimes at a great risk. Congratulations guys! We want you to know you aren't forgotten. If one wintry morning, you wake up and think you won't be missed, YOU'RE WRONG! We need you! Below Left: Jackie Martin steps off her bus from Monroe; Below: Stephanie Sachse is caught by surprise by Mr. Vinton's camera in front of her home in Lower Waterford; Right: Paul Racenet arrives at school after driving from Passumpsic; Below Right: Sean Sawyer is late as usual from East Burke. We all knew “senioritis was running rampant again when Mr. Mayo announced that 77 seniors had received 130 warnings for the first marking period — an all-time record! Senioritis is a contagious disease that students contract when they realize they are king of the moutain. The symptoms include not bothering to do homework, skipping school, skipping classes, fooling around in classes, etc. — not taking academics seriously. They don't seem to realize that you can fail your senior year, and not graduate. Although Mr. Mayo continuously emphasizes this point, some seniors completely block it out. You can't blame them for wanting to have fun during their last year, but 130 warnings is a bit ridiculous. Of course, we all know participating in in athletics and having parties are more interesting than homework, but must they dominate your whole life? When you walk up to get your diploma on graduation day, wouldn't it be nice to be wearing a gold tassel or perhaps even a gold braid? So, remember seniors, you haven't graduated yet! They are somewhat like superlatives, because they are voted on by the senior class. These Favorites include categories like Photo Not I Photo Not Available I Available Favorite Actor Actress , Favorite Food , Favorite Rock Group , and more. Looking back at former yearbooks, we see that the favorites haven't changed that much. Old standards like Pizza continue to make the list, but of course new people are chosen for actors, singers, etc., as time goes by. If you happen to look at an old yearbook and you see the former favorites, you are liable to start laughing. You ask yourself what kind of students could have picked such people. Yet, some day, you will be cleaning your closet (how long has it been?) and you will run across your old yearbook. At that time, you will wonder how you could have picked that person, and realize that things do change — for better or for worse. SPORTS Missed It By That Much! The Hilltopper Green Machine rolled on to another tremendously successful season. Falling agonizingly short of another State Championship, the Hilltoppers showed amazing dedication and perserverance. After trouncing the opposition in their first four games, the Hilltoppers lost their momentum against Kimball Union. The Academy's loosing streak continued for the next four games. Not until the traditional St.J. vs L.I. game was the Academy victorious once more. Adding insult to injury, the Academy's victory kept the Vikings from the State Championships. Led by tri-cap-tains Michele Lote, Gloria Petty, and Stephanie Bryant, the team showed startling improvement from first game to last, ending the season just one goal short of a tie. Still, the squad only had four previous letter-winners, and had been under threat of extinction. (Talk about morale-crushers!) Most of all the team suffered a confidence gap . Coach Ann Jones, beyond inculcating the basics, provided the encouragement needed to keep up the girls' morale when things looked bleakest. Other teams may have had better records, but none could say they had more fun. Its 12-1-1 record allowed the team to enter the playoffs for the FIRST TIME EVER. Coach Tuffy Clark completes four years as the Varsity coach, and his time and dedication have certainly paid off. As the regular season came to a close, hopes were high for an undefeated season. Disappointment hit as the whistle marked the close of the regular season and Spaulding, the next best team in the Division, had broken our record. In tournament play, the team won its debut game against Essex despite the opponent's different style. The Adademy moved from its Division IV emergence in the playoffs to Division I status. Thus, the Essex victory was especially significant. To everyone's dismay, however, the Academy lost in the second game to 3 ranked Mount Anthony. Despite the loss, the Academy still triumphed. The goals of the team at the beginning of the season were to finish at .500 and to qualify for tournament play. 90 SCOREBOARD Academy 5 Hazen 3 Academy 3 Peoples 0 Academy 5 Lamoille 1 Academy 7 Burke Mountain 1 Academy 11 Groveton 0 Academy 5 Lake Region 2 Academy 2 Hazen 2 Academy 2 Burke Mountain 0 Academy 5 Peoples 0 Academy 5 Spaulding 1 Academy 7 Sacred Heart 0 Academy 7 Lamoille 1 Academy 5 Lake Region 0 Academy 1 Spaulding 2 PLAYOFFS Academy 1 Essex 0 Academy 1 Mt. The girls had plenty of team spirit and played well together. Mr. Thurston worked throughout the year to build a stymieing defense, which some saw as the team's greatest strength. There can be no doubt, however, that the ferocious offense was vital. Coach Crawford concentrated on giving the girls their ceaseless endurance, insisting that if we stay committed to a hard running game, we can beat anyone. The girls' sweat paid off when they defeated Peoples in their first playoff game, after THREE OVERTIMES! Unfortunately, they were topped by Green Mountain, in the next game, but considering that the team has only existed for two years, making the playoffs at all was a remarkable achievement. Playing in the rain, Mr. Crawford, is not the only indication of female dominance. 1983 GIRLS JV SOCCER TEAM: Row 1: Catherine Rives, Toni Rodd, Katrina Tobin, Elizabeth Welsh, Susan Wyllie, Pom No-pakoon, Karen Granger, Krista Pezdirtz. Somehow, though, nobody did. Running became a disease (ask Alex Owre), and half the team was sibling to the other half. The harrier boys, relieved of last year's embarrassing dynamic duo, surprised themselves with their performances, but Why did we have to go to the award ceremonies when we never won anything? Senior inductee Peter Wright beat out the veterans for first on the team, and freshman Mike Williams threatened to become another in the long line of Williams jocks Glenn Montague ('86) had a gut feeling, however, and won the most Cokes. Coach Higgs continues to mold his team into a first-rate machine that depends on all the parts to run. If asked which was better (the offense or the defense). Coach Higgs would most certainly say the defense. However, if the team was asked, they would say the offense. After Henry Dalrymple graduated, the opposing teams sighed with relief and most of St. Johnsbury thought that the team would go down the drain. Well, this year's team proved them wrong. When asked what was different about the game since Henry left, a player said that it had become more of a running game and that Stewart seems to be taking hold . How does next year's team look? Well, five seniors are graduating (Paul Racenet, Peter Wright, John Ranney, Bill Brink and Mike Lavigne), but there are three juniors that will be able to take over. All in all, we're sure Coach Higgs will be able to shape any kind of team into a 1 fighting force. The 1983-1984 Girls Basketball Team were again the state champs, setting a new record of being the first team in Division II to win three state championships. Even though Coach Thurston became ill early in the season the girls never lost their grip. Coach Racenet and team captain Tammy Armour kept the team spirits up until Coach Thurston returned during the latter part of the season. A surprising amount of Freshmen are on the team this year, including Toni Rodd. This little dynamo has taken over. Toni is usually on the starting line-up and it is said that she ranks right up there with the veterans, like her sister Tonia. With their teamwork, the siblings could become the Academy's next 'dynamic duo'. If you ask Mr. Thurston which is better (defense or offense), he will say, The defense is the key to the offense. His statement is backed up by the team. When asked how the season was progressing, a player replied, We have an excellent attitude towards the game. We have high hopes for the State Championship. This player also remarked that next year's team looks promising . We aren't as fortunate as last year when only one senior left, for this year four seniors are leaving. However, our teams are never bad. Since there was snow this year, there was a big turnout for the ski team. The ski team is large enough to be divided into two categories — the alpine team and the cross-country team. Mr. Nitzche, Mr. Hoar, and Mr. Goodrich have taken over the coaching positions for Mr. Eaton. A new cross-country ski club was formed for skiers (without transportation) to go for a fun-filled day of skiing with friends. Except for a few accidents, like a broken ski, it was a pretty good season. So, when you see students with expensive ski jackets, I Love Skiing pins, or maybe a broken arm, you'll realize that they are most likely a member of the ski team. BREAK A LEG!! The team lost twelve seniors in 1983, taking away a great deal of the team's strength. This year only four seniors remain on the wrestling squad and forty to fifty percent of the wrestlers are freshmen with little or no experience. Not only is the wrestling team young, but injuries and complications have also posed a serious problem. Some players have dropped out of the program because of trouble with their studies or because their parents disapproved of their participation. Despite the teams inexperience, the season split quite evenly between wins and losses. With the large number of young members this year, future seasons will see a strong and competetive team. When we started putting together a section for the coaches, we finally realized that we could not include pictures of all the people who devote their time and knowledge to the betterment of our teams. Without them, the teams would not have the success that they do. The endless hours of work that the coaches put in are displayed by the number of first place success' that the Academy has had over the years. In only the last four years, the Academy has taken first in Boys' and Girls' Basketball, Track, and Football. This is to let those who are not shown here know that everybody realizes the commitment you make and appreciates your perserverance. Thank you. With new summer uniforms and 20 new members, the Academy band hit the football field. As in the past, the band continued to play at all varsity football games and local parades. In the spring the band traveled to Rutland to participate in the All-States Parade. To raise money for their new uniforms, four members—Brian Laferriere, Renee Loranger, Jeff Winchester, and Tina Fearon—travelled to Rutland to join with 12 other band members from across the state to make a television commercial promoting the sales of hotwater heater jackets at 3 of the varsity football games. The band also sold jewelry in the fall to pay for travelling and uniform expenses. Together the band and chorus participated in the annual Christmas and Commencement concerts. The Academy band also joined forces with the St. Johnsbury town band to play an outdoor concert during the springtime Maple Sugar Festival. 108 Row 1: Drum Major-Brian Laferriere, Michele Lote, Gina Russo, Marla Hawkins, Kandy Martel, Erin Mayo, Gary McGinnis; Row 2: Renee Loranger, Auburn Currier, Jeff Winchester, Kristi Houghton, Carol Wilkins; Row 3: Jody Jurentkuff, Amanda Ellis, Joceyn Mills, Stephanie Donaldson, Valerie Giesel- man; Row 4: Stephen Thomas, Bernard Willey, Brian Naatz, Tina Fearon, Steven Towle; Row 5: Jayson Benoit, Mike Keenan, Troy Ruggles, Steve Pezdirtz, Craig Perkins; Not Shown: Kris Classen, Anthony Christopher, Elaine Boardman, Virginia Chipley, Laurel Majuri, Michaud Duriba, Mike Diemer, Kenneth Keenan, Joe Lenahan, David McGregoi Dennis Prevost, Curt Mahlstedt; Top Jeff Winchester prepares to break int an encore of NC-4 after a Topper touch down; Left: The Adademy Band stand in regal form as they entertain the crow during the St.J.-Littleton football game Row 1: Diana Willson, Tina Fearon, Terri La-Bounty, Kandy Martel, Auburn Currier, Stacie Ruggles, Maureen Philips, Kristin Diemer; Row 2: Valerie Gieslman, Virginia Chipley, Stephanie Donaldson, Kristen Classen, Dorinda Michaud; Row 3: Brian Naatz, Ben Blankinship, Steve Pez-dirtz, Mark Edney, Alan Richardson, Craig Perkins, David Frye, Chris McCarthy. Although the staff began with an overwhelming twenty-five members, it quickly thinned down to a very reliable eight students, consisting of six seniors and two sophomores. We spent all our free time, including study halls, after school, and various evenings from 6:00 to 11:00 in the physics and computer rooms (as we started using the Apple computer word processor this year) just to make sure the deadlines were met. 1 would personally like to express a great deal of thanks to all staff members, including the often forgotten Business Staff members who devoted many hours selling ads to help keep the price of the book low. The Staff as a whole would like to thank Mrs. Nancy Bellefeuille, the Business Advisor, and Mr. William Vinton, our Yearbook Advisor and classical music fan! I hope that all of you readers will enjoy this book, now, and whenever you look at it in the future to remember the great year that was . . . 1984! Sincerely, Brian K. Fortnightly Publication! This year's Student staff, led by Editor Sean Sawyer, seeks to make the paper a leading force in the Academy community. With a goal of fortnightly publication by the year's end, staff members emphasize more student participation in order to build a solid base of writers and technical assistants. The paper also seeks to improve the quality of writing through stricter editorial control, more provoking topics, and a variety of continuing features and timely pieces. While Roving Reporter, S.O.S., Heavy Metal Minded, and Super Senior become more and more a part of each issue, new features on faculty and community make the Student more interesting and more journalistically sound. Council Sponsors Decorations Once again the Student Council has done a superb job in administrating our school. Under the 1983-84 president, Jennie Fuehrer, the Student Council met about once every two weeks to decide about school activities, such as which clubs could hold variety days. The Student Council also sponsored some of the winter dances and donated money to the Chamber of Commerce for new decorations along the streets. The Student Council is an important part of any school, and ours has certainly proved itself. The National Honor Society serves to recognize those students, who display a high degree of leadership, scholarship, character, and service. Early in the year NHS went on a very tiring hike up Mt. Moosilauke, meeting a dog named Moose at the top (the name was written on his collar). During February, the group took a trip to Boston in order to see a broadway show. Turning to a little business, the induction of new members will be earlier this year instead of the usual time in May. Having a National Honor Society at the Academy certainly adds dignity. 113 Read, Read, Read! The Lyceum is ready to settle down by a fireside and READ, READ, READ! Led by Mr. Conover, Lyceum gives students the opportunity to read and discuss the same book and comment on their likes and dislikes. Everybody interprets the book from a different point of view, so a new understanding and meaning may be revealed to others. The favorite get-togethers are the supper meetings, at which everybody eats WAY too much food, including Polly, Mr. Conover's dog! The members are free to give ideas about what books they would like to read. Sometimes a book relating to the occasion is read—1984 was a particularly appropriate choice this year! Though the Spanish club is about three times the size it was last year, its members are harder to find. (Look at the picture!) Well, you know, commitments ... Parlez-Vous Francais? Mr. O'Brien loves the opportunity to show slides of his South American travels. The club also enjoys going to (or planning to go to) different members' homes and cooking Spanish (logically) meals. And no one could forget Tortilla Flats! And then, of course, there are the constant plans to see something Spanish related in Boston. Under the leadership of Mr. Wayne Majuri, President Shawn Foster, and Vice President Mike Claffey, the 1984 French club once again set out to explore and learn about French Culture, and improve their French conversation skills. On November 18, the French Club traveled to Manchester New Hampshire to see a Molier play. During the winter season, the French club sang Christmas carols for the Hospital and Convalescent Center, went on cross country skiing and skating outings, and took a pre Christmas visit to Sherbrook, Quebec. She Stoops To Conquer The Drama Club presents three plays again this year—the 18th century Oliver Goldsmith work She Stoops to Conquer, L'il Abner (based on the comic strip) and a home-made play written by Director Janet Warner-Ashley. The hours put in by director and cast often go unappreciated, but a more dedicated crew could not be found in the entire school. After-school time is lost to rehearsals for weeks on end, and as performance date approaches, late nights are spent in set-designing and dress rehearsals. The Club's only goal is to produce a play to be proud of, and with the cast's commitment, no one can say it's failed. 121 122 Checkmate! Although the Chess Club is small, the air of intense concentration proves their dedication to the game. Under the direction of Mr. Hegarty, the Chess Club works out Chess problems and the members compete against each other under a time limit. Although the Club is not one of the most populated, the members still find plenty of competition amongst each other. Tom Clark, Paul Koster, George Bludevich, Mr Charles Hegarty. Bombs Away! Armed with their mechanical pencils, the War-Gamers Club is ready to fight a continuing battle everyday after school. Led by Mr. Eaton and President Chris Bostic, the War-Gamers Club gives students an opportunity to improve their skill and strategy. If possible, the members gather daily after school and play games centering around World War II, such as the Allied Invasion. So, if you have had a bad day and you need to vent your frustration, drop by the Biology Lab and join in on the fun. Uncle Sand Wants You! When three feet of snow have you down, go to California! Or if you don't have a plane ticket sitting around, go to C204 and watch a surfing movie, listen to the Beach Boys, wear garlands and a gaudy shirt, and be boardfiend for a day. And when you're transformed, hit the slopes on a Burton Snowboard and go surfing.'' You'll no doubt get just as wet trying to stay on your snowboard as you would in the ocean. But you'll have twice the fun, and no fighting for the beach! Besides, there's more sand on the raod during the winter than on any beach. Or trek up to Willoughby or Crystal and try sailboarding. Of course, your chance of finding enough wind is virtually none, but that doesn't daunt the undauntible, frighten the fearless, swerve the unswerving! Bon Voyage! This year the International Club is on their way to France. Led by Mr. Swartz and President Vinny Egizi, the International Club is visiting such places as the Rhone Valley, the Riviera, the wine country, Lyons, and, of course, Paris. At various times, the members are given a chance to wander off on their own and visit such tourist attractions as Versailles. If no mishaps occur, such as getting too caught up in the cosmopolitan night life, the trip looks as if it will be a huge success. Au Revoir!! Also, members get a perspective of what a career in the media world would be like. With Lisa Gladstone as president, the AV Club produces the twice weekly radio program, Academy Highlights , and an occasional television show for the local stations. In addition to these productions, the AV Club is invaluable to the success of the D.J. dances. This year the AV Club made a video documentary, which Mr. Cummings uses on his recruiting travels. Although the Ushers Club is not as celebrated as many other clubs, it still plays a vital role at the Academy. This Club does all of the ushering for the Academy Theater Productions, and any other events which takes place in Fuller Hall. Consisting of only students, the Club is headed by Mrs. Joyce Racenet, who has the worrisome task of organizing the members. Although the ushers do not have to wear the traditional red jacket with gold braid, they are still required to wear semi-formal dress. The major advantage is that the ushers are allowed to get into the events for free. The big event of the fall—L.I. Pep Chapel finally got students worked up enough to start cheering! The football team was its usual inept at pinning on corsages, but the humor of the situation made up for the time. Even funnier was the total lack of preparation that the seniors showed in two embarrassing attempts to recite a class cheer, not to mention the Cheerleaders' wobbly pyramid! Lisa Bedor was under-standibly elated to be announced Homecoming Queen, after Karen Pessini and Jennie Fuehrer became runners-up (though Paul Racenet is rumored to have won unofficially). Rain led to the demise of the parade, frustrating the people who had put in their hours on making class floats. Record amounts of pizza got consumed at the pizza party, and the bonfire blazed forth despite the prior rain. After four losses in a row the team got worried, and determined that defeat at the hands of the Vikings was simply out of the question. A kick-off return score by L.I. became the proverbial last straw, and St. J. burst forth, scoring twice, then digging in to keep our lead firm. L.I. goal-line defense stymied our offense, but the 'Topper defense was even better. Mike Lavigne and Greg Bunce were the day's running backs, receiving from Waldo Racenet. The fact that Lyndon had already ordered State Championship jackets made victory all that sweeter. 130 Left: Lorin Whiteley gets her picture taken as Paul Miller enjoys a pipe; Below: The team gets psyched for the LI game; Bot.Left: Sherry Ma-cLean holds still as Mike Lavigne attempts to pin on her corsage; Bot.Right: Coach Clark, acting as MC. helps Mrs. Morrison with some directions during LI chapel; Opp.Bot.Left: the LI scoreboard tells the story; Opp.Bot.Right: Overjoyed at being elected Homecomming Queen, Lisa Bedor struggles for something to say. 131 Right: Greg Bunce ( 48) cuts up field past a Lyndon defender; Below: Dale Urie falls prey to vicious L.I. players; Bottom Left: Sophomore David Giacobbe mediates on the game's outcome; Bottom Right: Amy Toney, ecstatic over an Academy play. 132 The Thrill Of Victory Left: Coach Racenet's wife, Colleen, congratulates him after the game. They hail from thirty states and thirteen countries, extending from Canada to as far away as Thailand. Waterman House, a new dorm, was added to the four dorms already maintained here at the Academy — Brantview, Sheepcote, Crampton, and Tinker. Waterman House was dedicated in honor of Judge Sterry Waterman, a member of the Academy Board of Trustees. This new boys' dorm provides twenty-one new spaces for the increasing number of resident students. Mr. John Cummings, Director of Admissions, seems to be doing his job well, for over one-half of the dormitory students are new to the Academy this year. Many of the foreign students have come to the Academy with hopes of attending an American college post high school graduation, and what better place to get used to the American school system than here at the Academy? Talented Alumni Return To The Academy Among other visitors, this year the Academy has been graced by the presence of a vocal group, an alumnus, and a Dartmouth professor. The Company , a vocal group from Plymouth State College, came to the Academy at the prompting of alumna Marie Fagnant. They performed many songs, ranging from ballads to pop-rock. William Lanteau is an alumnus of the Academy, who has appeared in many movies and TV shows, such as On Golden Pond and Newhart . He presented a one-act comedy — SOLO!! With the use of his various facial expressions, it was a huge success. Also, Professor Gaylord of Dartmouth College, at the request of Mr. Ashley's Humanities class, came to the Academy to perform his rendition of Chaucer's The Miller's Tale . I seek opportunity — not security. I do not wish to be a kept person, humbled and dulled by having the State look after me. I want to take the calculated risk, to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for dole. I prefer the challenge of life to the guaranteed calm of Utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficience nor my dignity for a hand-out. It is my heritage to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creation, and to face the world boldly and say, This I have done.
