More than playing football in piles of leaves, skiing at Burke Mtn., or swimming at Adam’s Hole, he’ll remember the soul and spirit of that place and those days • for this is his school. This is St. J. A. 3 4 4 Take time for the quiet moments, to reflect, to predict. Remember the friends made at St. J. A. Pledge to protect each other from wintry winds promise to be near with an outstretched hand and an open heart. We reflect on our years at St. J. A., remembering our friends, the good times, and even the bad All a part of our growth. We’ve come this far and will dream our dreams until we make them reality “To strive, to seek, and not to yield” (Tennyson) 6 If you reflect you can almost see the wall of time. The moss on it still wet. You can smell it. Looking forward there are no walls so Get on your mark, get ready, get set Reflections of St. Johnsbury Academy, of 140 years of history A tradition of excellence in the classroom, on the playing field, on the stage A tradition of students that represent the best of the Academy A tradition of a faculty dedicated to the Academy, concerned for their students in and out of the classroom A tradition of knowing what it means to be a Hilltopper Reflect tradition and you get change New faces, new names, new friends New buildings to replace the old New subjects to keep pace with the times New motorcycles under Headmasters instead of horses 140 years of other people making Academy history And it was our turn this year. This book is the reflection of us reflections of guidance New Fellows Program Gives Teachers Experience The new Fellows Project, founded by Mr. Cummings, Mr. Trottier, and Mr. Aldredge, gives participants the opportunity to see what the career of teaching offers. In addition, Fellows serve as proctors in the expanded dormitory program. Each year four people will participate. Mr. Peter O’Brien, who graduated from Bowdoin College in 1975, is teaching French I, French II and Elementary Algebra. Ms. Jeannette Harris, from Freedonia, N.Y., teaches English and is helping with costumes for Academy Theatre. Mr. Craig Racenet, an Academy graduate, class of 1977, teaches Biol- ogy and Earth Science. A star quarterback in college, Mr. Racenet also serves as the Academy’s head football coach. Ms. Dorothy Stauss, also a Bowdoin graduate, was active on the swim team in college. At Bowdoin. she gained a strong background in Special Education. This year, Ms. Stauss will be teaching Remedial Math and Elementary Algebra I. Mr. Aldredge, who is heading the program, considers the Fellows to be valuable additions to the Academy faculty. The success of the Fellows Project in its first year indicates that it will continue for many years. New Faces In The A dministra tion This year two familiar faces can be found in some rather unfamiliar offices Due to the increased enrollment of resident students, the need arose for a person to coordinate the numerous programs associated with resident life. The Academy is fortunate to have Mr. Gerald Aldredge as Dean of Resident Students. Mr. Aldredge has served as a dormitory proctor and has taught English for ten years. In this role, he will be directly responsible for every facet of resident life as the program increases in size to 100 students next year. Mr. Robert Trottier, our new assistant Headmaster, has assumed many of the duties formerly performed by Mr. Gary Moore (now serving as the Fish and Game Commisioner of the State of Vermont). Mr. Trottier coordinates student activities and is responsible for student discipline. In addition, Mr. Trottier will still teach students parler Francais! 14 Opposite left: Mr. Bernier Mayo, Headmaster, answers the phone on a busy day. Cleaner And Better Place: Custodians With a physical plant the size of the Academy’s, dedication and hard work are required to keep things running smoothly. The “Men in Green”, our Custodians, work constantly to make the Academy a pleasant place to be. This year the staff includes: Robert Towle, head custodian and adviser to the bowling league; Warren Penniman, custodian for Severance and Fuller Halls; Wesley Locke, tends to Ranger Hall and the Breeze way; Bernie Page, keeps Colby Hall spotless; Gordon Willey, takes care of the gym; Toni Handy, cleans the first floor of Streeter; Rachel Norway, housekeeper for the dorms; and Van Culver and Ralph Aussiker, bus drivers. In addition, Howard Churchill takes care of heating and plumbing problems, Michael Bugbee is the Academy’s electrician and Mel Pierce takes care of all general maintenance on campus. F Top: Rachel Norway hides her broom away at the end of the cleaning day in Brantview. Mid. left: Bob Towle checks on supply orders. Mid. right: Mel Pierce repairs the door lock in Mr. Mayo’s office. Right: Bob Towle and Bernie Page prepare trophie cases for the exhibits that will commemorate the Academy’s 140th Birthday. 18 Food Service: One Of The Best! Mr. John Aja, head of the Academy branch of the Seiler food service is often heard saying that his purpose in being here is to serve the kids and to give them the best food possible. There is little doubt that Mr. Aja is not only making promises, but that he is also keeping them. Mr. Aja’s hard work, along with the dedication of his staff makes this food service one of the best in the state, if not in the country. The spectacular buffet served in commemoration of the Academy’s 140th birthday was but one example of the extra effort that the food service puts into the job. Resident students are very familiar with the delicious meals that are routine and make dormitory life so pleasant. Perhaps the only unfortunate thing about the food service is that students won’t be able to bring it along with them to college when they graduate — many will wish they had the opportunity! Rotarian Grant Expands Computer Program LUCILLE BYRNE Honors III, Remedial Math Algebra I, Math V (Independent) Learning Problems Resource Teacher Adviser to Math League PAUL WILKINSON Elem. Alg. I (part 2), Machine Shop Intro to Alg. Trig., Graphic Arts Adviser to Guitar Club Aided by a grant from the St. Johnsbury Rotary Club, the Academy expanded its computer department with the purchase of 15 new Radio Shack and Apple computers. The increased number of computers allows many students an opportunity to learn programming. Mrs. Rolfe feels that the brand-new computer science courses are going well for the first year. Many teachers have made use of the computers in their classes. Mathematics courses, science courses and even English courses have involved the use of the computer. In addition, students may review for Basic Competencies using the machines. The record-keeping abilities of computers make them a natural storage device for basketball statistics. The math department and the school have benefited greatly from this generous gift. JOHN CONOVER NOLA FORBES Honors IV, Elem. Alg. Part I Basic Geometry Head of Math Department Adviser to Lyceum Elem. On any given day, Academy students can be heard saying: “Yccchh! What smells?!” (Chemistry lab) “Oh, disgusting (Biology dissection) “I’m getting dizzy!” (Physics student on turntable demonstrating angular momentum to the class) What does this show? Namely that science is activity, it is students doing things to learn about the world, and the Academy’s Science Department involves students in many active learning situations. Laboratories, field trips, classroom activities and use of the school’s expanded computer facilities are common and necessary components of the science curricula. By the end of the fall semester, all of Mr. Bresica’s Writing Techniques juniors were fluent enough in word processing (SCRIPSIT) to compose, revise, and print their 10 to 15 page papers on the TRS-80s. The facility with which the students could rewrite their papers on the TRS-80s dispelled most fears about using “those computer things” in English class. The techniques used in Social Studies courses span a similar range, from such time-honored methods as class discussion and term papers, to innovative studies of stock market dynamics using computers. In Psychology class, Ms. Riley has developed a new volunteer program that gives students the opportunity to visit patients at nursing homes and other local institutions. These activities enable students to deal with real-life situations, rather than just studying about them in textbooks. C. However, it is impossible to hide the fact that the Academy’s excellent vocational department, under the direction of Mr. Louis Gehlbach, is the best in the state. The entire department features exceptional and rigorous courses, including Auto Mechanics, Culinary Arts, Business, Health Occupations, and Construction Trades. Mr. Broughton’s Electronics class has been cited by the U.S. Department of Education for being the New England region’s “Outstanding Vocational Program.” Hotel-Restaurant Occupations is a new program designed to help students get valuable job experience. Capturing a Division II Vermont State Championship, the team demonstrated the importance of unification and versatility. Led by senior tri-captains Robert Ward, Kevin Kemp, and John Robillard, the Hilltoppers compiled a successful 8-1 record including a decisive victory over Lyndon Institute and the state title game. Unmistakably, this final victory resulted from an undying desire for excellence throughout the season. Each individual athlete made a decision before the season ever started that satisfaction would only come from a Vermont state championship. Unifying each individual effort, Coach Craig Racenet put his charges within reach of their goal and they took advantage of this illustrious opportunity. This team also possessed tremendous versatility. The impenetrable defensive line of Kevin Kemp, Jim Hayes, Robert Ward, John Robillard and Dennis Veilleux, combined with the fancy groundwork of offensive trio Tyler Ayer, Eric Philpot and Dennis Urie comprised a strong basis for this year’s championship team. The complementary quarterbacking of Chuck Carroll and Paul Racenet, along with the finesse of wide receiver Jeff Clouatre was of vital importance throughout the season. In general, the team possessed an uncanny ability to adapt to the varying tactics of the opposition. This versatility and unified purpose produced a team that well deserved the 1982 Division II Vermont State Title. Right: Eric Philpot turns up field behind the block of Tyler Ayer. Below: Robert Ward and Richard Lyons ready themselves for the attack. Middle Right: Chuck Carroll picks apart the Windsor secondary. The Hilltoppers, who can look forward to twelve starters returning next year, posted a very respectable 5-8-1 record and missed the playoffs by only a half game. Of the eight games that the Toppers lost, seven were by a margin of one or two goals. The biggest factor contributing to this year’s success was the ability of the Academy booters to put the ball in the opponent’s net. The offense, led by Alex Palacios (16 goals) and Vinnie Egizi (8 goals), increased its goal production from ten a year ago to twenty-nine this year. Both Alex and Vinnie were selected to the Division Four All-Star Team. Girls Soccer made its debut this year in St. Johnsbury. Thirty-nine girls, up from an expected 20, turned out for the preseason preparation and indicated that soccer had finally come of age at the Academy. Lead by the enthusiasm of Head Coach Howard Crawford, with the assistance of Tom Conte and Dan Thurston, the team successfully accomplished their goals. The primary objective of the 1982 girls soccer season was education. To build a strong team the girls needed a solid understanding of the game. Once this was completed, the victories-both mental and physical-would soon follow. Lead by Co-captains Racheal Palacios and Julie Veilleux the team was competitively “in” a lot more games than their record shows. Throughout the season the girls demonstrated increasing improvement and enthusiasm. As Coach Crawford put it “We’re ready for next year.” With the loss of seniors Rachael Palacios, Julie Veilleux, Abbie Whitehill, Anne Hill, and Pam Kelso the team will have several tough positions to fill. However, a great number of juniors are returning and the team should come out on top with little difficulty. Without doubt the debuting girls soccer team exemplifies the high standard of excellence that has become so much a part of St. Johnsbury Academy tradition. We all look forward to next year. A game of speed and skill, field hockey demands years of experience. However, because of competition from the newly formed girl’s soccer team, experience is exactly what the team lacked. For several girls, field hockey was a totally new game. If anybody was ever chosen to illustrate the saying that “Winning isn’t everything”, it would have to be the field hockey team. Losses are discouraging, but the team never once gave up hope, and St. J. A. spirit was present at every game, led by Co-captains Lisa Desrochers and Sondra Hrynchuk. Their battle cry? V-I-C-T-O-R-Y! (The bus driver, Van, thought the battle cry “Rock and Roll will never die!” was more appropriate!) The word “team” never lost meaning. Instead it grew stronger as the season continued. If the team s weakness was in lack of goals, their strength was in friendship, encouragement, and determination. Coach Ann Jones will always be remembered for encouraging the team to “give it your all” and, of course, for her favorite phrase-“It’s only a bone bruise!” First Row: Carey Ogiati, Tabetha Daponte, Karen Boivin; Second Row: Kandy Martel. Working with five girls and twelve boys, Coach Hegarty formed the athletes into a respectable team. Captain Chris Williams, a transfer student who ran to a first place finish in last year’s Division Four State Meet, led the team throughout the season. Right with Chris at the top of the standings was junior John Barbarisi, who finished in the top five throughout the year. Both ran a strong race in the Vermont State Meet earning seventh and eleventh places respectively. Their performance qualified them for the New England Meet where Chris finished with a highly respectable 27th place. With the experience of Laura Willson and the enthusiasm of Patty Williams, Karen Lesko, and Kristen Jensen the girls team ran away with several key victories. A vital part to the team’s success was the improvement of freshman Debbie Doyon who by year’s end placed in the top five of several contests. Next year looks to bring back many experienced runners and a winning season. Above: Tension mounts, as St. J. A. Harriers await the sound of the gun. Appearing at every football game, the group of 10 girls led many shouts of approval as our Hilltoppers knocked down opposing players on their way to the State Championship. Led by co-captains Minnie Garey and Debbie Pessini, the girls also worked behind the scenes making locker decorations every week, cookies for the football players and banners for Fuller Hall. The hard work and dedication characteristic of the ‘Topper Cheerleaders did not end with the LI game but continued the following week with the State Championship game in Essex. Although the extra work demanded time and energy, the cheerleaders never complained but gave of themselves untiringly. After the football season, the Varsity Basketball Cheerleaders prepared themselves for the up-coming season. Cocaptains Minnie Garey and Leanne Cranston led the squad through an enthusiastic season. Continuing the tradition, the cheerleaders supported the Toppers at all home and away games as the team defended its State Championship. The cheerleaders may sometimes be taken for granted, but they are a vital and irreplacable part of the Academy tradition. Row 1: Leanne Cranston. A TEAM In Every Sense Of The Word The 1982-83 Varsity basketball team was led by the all-around outstanding play of second team All-American Henry Dalrymple. The All-time school record-holder in every statistical category, Henry unselfishly sacrificed his own scoring to strengthen other members of the team and as a result the team developed a five weapon offensive attack to complement the Hilltopper tradition of playing outstanding team defense. Key wins were recorded over recent tournament rival South Burlington, once in double overtime. The team won the Hanover Christmas Tournament and ended the regular season with a twelve game winning streak. Other seniors included Co-Captain and two year starter Chuck Carroll, Ted Marcotte and Tyler Ayer. All played significant roles in the success of a team that really was a team in every sense of the word. Above: Ted Marcotte puts up one of his patented jumpers against Gould Academy. Coach Thurston, however, and the rest of the 1982-83 Girls Basketball team aimed not for a rebuilding year but rather a third straight State Championship. Following an 11-0 regular season record the girls fell just short of their goal losing to a well-rounded Lamoille team in the quarter finals of the State Tournament. The future looks promising for next year’s team with only one senior, Pam Kelso, being lost to graduation. Tammy Armour, who missed ten games this year with an injured shoulder, continued to impress fans and opponents alike with her all-around basketball ability. Rae-Ann Wood and Lisa Bedor will also be returning bringing with them their ball handling and outside shooting skills. The success of this year’s team was also centered around the rebounding and all around hustle of forwards Tonia Rodd, Julie Tanguay, Karen Pessini, and Pam Kelso. New year indeed looks promising for the 1983-84 Girls Basketball season. We all with them the best of luck with confidence that they will carry on the tradition of athletic excellence at St. Johnsbury Academy. Waiting for the snow, the team had plenty of time for conditioning, which included many trips up the “dreaded hill.” Frequent trips to Newark Pond allowed the cross country skiers to practice on a little of the elusive white stuff (with some people getting “their feet wet”, so to speak!) Meanwhile, the Alpine skiers kept out of the rain by working in the weight room. Finally, the team’s fears were realized, and the season was cancelled in mid-January because of the lack of snow. Many on the team elected to run in indoor track to keep fit, and it is well they did, for four weeks later a major snowstorm allowed the skiers one last chance in the state meet. The Girls Alpine team was able to capitalize on one week of practice and qualified for the State meet. Unfortunately, the Girls Nordic, the Boys Nordic and the Boys Alpine teams saw their season end all too soon. Front: Coach Goodrich. Laura Willson. Ellen Rideout. Chuck Richards. These large numbers combined with the maturing of some of the older grapplers led to one of the most successful seasons in the past four years. After getting off to a slow start the Toppers ended up winning 8 of their last ten dual meets. They also fared well in tournaments finishing fourth twice and second in the first annual Hilltopper Holiday Tournament. The team did equally as well in the State Tournament. They finished 8th of 19 teams in what Mr. Murray described as being “very competitive field”. While classified as a team sport Wrestling focuses on individual accomplishments. This year’s team was no exception and had plenty of its own standouts. Sophomore Keith Benoit finished the year with a 24 win, 12 losses, and 1 draw record and finished 6th in the State Meet. In gearing themselves to play at all the football and basketball games, they have been very diligent in attending frequent late night practices at Mr. Heald’s slightest command. Both a larger Flag Team and a new Boy’s Color Guard have toiled long hours to complete the marching band’s formation. The other half of Mr. Heald’s jurisdiction, the Chorus, rehearses with unfailing high spirits in preparing for the Christmas, Pops, and Commencement concerts with the Band. Also the musical, West Side Story will keep the Chorus and Mr. Heald in a perpetual state of exasperation. The other, the “Roving Reporter” lets the student body express its opinions. With these and other interesting sections, the Student will be a great success once again. no The Lamp The goal of this year’s yearbook staff is a May yearbook. This was decided because many of the seniors wanted their yearbooks prior to graduation. With an all senior staff, the work is really getting done because the seniors will benefit the most from their work. Led by Lisa Desrochers, Editor, and Mr. Vinton, the faculty advisor, changes are being made this year with an emphasis on the amount of copy in the yearbook. More copy is being used to better inform the graduates years from now. Because of the increased interest this year, the seniors feel this will be the best yearbook ever. Ill New Computers Boost Computer Club Math League Joins National Organization 112 The addition of ten Radio Shack and four Apple computers to the Math Department has engendered renewed interest in the Computer Club, especially among freshmen. The zealous members reputedly haunt the Computer Room until the wee hours of the morning, always with never ending questions for Mrs. Rolfe. But with Peter Hammer as their president, the members hope to further their quest for computer literacy by inviting professional programmers to guide them through the wilderness of advanced programming. While the Math League has not been as fortunate in their membership, they have more than made it up with their ambitious plans of joining the Twin State Math League and perhaps even the New England Math League. Both clubs plan to join the Continental Math League to test their problem-solving skills nation wide. What is the sum of 1,237 ' .0069? Future Business Leaders America This year, the goal of the Future Business Leader’s of America is to send two or three girls to the National Convention in California. To facilitate this, they have already had a successful carwash, and are planning a type-a-thon. Each girl will solicit pledges for ten hours of continuous typing. In addition to this, all of the FBLA will go to the State Convention. Here they will compete with 22 other schools. They don’t worry much about this contest. In recent years, the Academy FBLA has won 7-8 of the 12 prizes. Whether it be Typing, Shorthand, or Accounting, the FBLA always proves to be a worthy first glimpse of tomorrow’s business population. This ambitious two week excursion will take twenty people to many historical places, such as Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Loch Lomond. Not to be left out are the great cities of London and Edinburgh. The International Club is not just fun and games, for the travellers learn a great deal, not only from the trip itself, but also in the pre-trip preparation that begins early in the school year and extends right up until Spring vacation, when the club departs. This absurd but witty comedy by Oscar Wilde portrays people for whom the trivial is important and the important trivial. It takes place in England at the turn of the century. Dan King was delightful as the affected Mr. Worthing who claims to be Earnest in town and Jack in the country. His friend Algernon Moncreiff, an insatiable eater and a perfect fop was portrayed with hilarity by Ben Blankenship. Lane, Algy’s cockney gentleman’s gentleman was Garland Walker. The acting talents of Julie Robinson, Holly Russell, Rachael Krizan, Sean Sawyer and Colin O’Brien complemented the author’s dry and sophisticated humor. As a result, the club does not run along conventional lines; the members frequent the Graphic Arts room only when they have projects in progress. Besides printing tickets for Academy Theatre productions and personalized stationery, the club hopes to be able to print the school’s monthly calendar and other such small projects easily managed by their type of equipment. T. V. Studio Spurs A. V. Activities This year, the Audio-Visual club had three main projects. They interviewed anyone and everyone for “Academy Highlights” which was broadcast twice a week over WSTJ radio. They also produced a half-hour T.V. program called “Academy Journal” broadcast over cable T.V. in Janurary. In collaboration with the photography club, they developed a promotional slide show about the Academy broadcast over Vermont E.T.V. Hurriedly, the class officers arranged committee meetings to organize the building of the floats. As the floats neared completion, a raging rain storm threatened the parade, but it did not dampen the exuberance of the students. They displayed their enthusiasm by artistically decorating the inside of Colby, Severance, and Ranger Halls. Spirit reached a fever pitch Friday afternoon as the whole school gathered in Fuller Hall for the annual Pep Rally. The band and cheerleaders prepared the school for Saturday’s game and the students responded with spirited cheering. The faculty did their usual rendition of the school song, and the school joined in singing the Alma Mater. A highpoint in the program came when Robert Ward, Kevin Kemp, and John Robillard gave a humorous pep talk that ended with Kevin Kemp’s wild impression of Knute Rockne. The Pep Chapel ended with the final announcement of the 1982 Homecoming Queen, Ingrid Owre. Despite the threat of the storm, the decorated floats successfully paraded down Main St. urged on by the cheers of spectators. The parade proceeded to the field behind Brant-view where football players threw the L.I. dummy into the blazing bonfire. As the bonfire faded, the spectators filtered to the cafeteria where they hungrily ate free pizza. Having eaten their fill, they returned home to get a good night’s sleep for the big game the next day. The main event took place at 1:30 p.m., but eager spectators were at the field an hour before kickoff. By the time the game started, hundreds of people packed the sidelines. The first half of play was a seesaw battle, with both teams scoring early. L.I. shocked the Hilltoppers early and took the lead 13-6. However, Mike Lavigne responded to the challenge and broke away from numerous tackles for an 80 yard kickoff return and a 14-13 lead. The Academy never looked back and won handily 33-13. 128 Far left: Ingrid Owre looks out over the crowd after being crowned 1982 Homecoming Queen. On December 13, 1982 the Academy celebrated the 140th year of existence since its founding by Erastus, Thaddeus and Joseph Fairbanks. A day full of ceremony began when Mr. Chouinard unveiled the official birthday portrait of the campus created by Mr. Golden and his art students. Anna Rothe, Student Council President then raised the new school flag with the assistance of Mr. Newell, as Senior Class President Robert Ward rang the old school bell fourteen times, once for every ten years. At 11 am the school gathered for a special assembly in Fuller Hall and were joined by trustees and alumni of the Academy. Mr. Chouinard welcomed all present and introduced Anna Rothe who led the Flag Salute. Rachael Palacios then gave a reading from the Book of Ecclesiastes. Following the prayer, Mr. Mayo spoke on the privilege of attending the Academy and the pride that he felt being its head master. All alumni and students joined in singing the old “School Song” and the assembly closed with Robert Ward speaking on the many opportunities available throughout the four years at the Academy. 132 Opposite top right: Robert Ward talks of life as a student in the Academy; Opposite bottom left: Rachael Palacios reads “For every thing there is a season ”, Opposite bottom right: Renate Haselton sings the old “School Song”. The new house is dedicated to Mrs. Dorothy Cramton, esteemed trustee, teacher, and friend to the Academy. The inauguration began at 1:00 p.m. on October 2, 1982 with a tour of the house. Following the tour, the guests and resident students gathered in the livingroom where Judge Sterry Waterman presented a plaque and portrait of Mrs. Cramton. The portrait and plaque now hang above the fireplace in the front room of the house. After the presentation many guests proceeded to Mr. Mayo’s house for tea, where the resident students had the opportunity to get acquainted with the Board of Trustees. Cramton House is the focal point of a new experiment in which the girls live under less rigid rules and are expected to act as responsible adults. A new girls’ dormitory, Cramton House, honoring Mrs. Dorothy Cramton, a member of the Board of Trustees and a loyal friend of the Academy, was successfully dedicated and provided an alternative lifestyle for its eight residents. In its second year of existence, the Dormitory Council, comprised of one member from each of the four dormitories, continued to provide a means of communication between the resident students and the school administration. Representatives Kitty O’Connor (Sheepcote), Terrell Paulk (Tinker), Paul Miller (Brantview), and Rachael Palacios (Cramton) initiated many changes that helped improve the quality of life in the dormitories. Each year, for one weekend, parents of the resident students come to visit the Academy to get a taste of the dormitory life. This year the Academy invited the parents to St. Johnsbury for a crisp, autumn Vermont weekend. Parents began to arrive on Friday evening, October 23, and by Saturday morning, they had invaded every hotel in town. On Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. they met their children’s teachers at the luncheon held in the cafeteria. Chef John Aja’s professional touch highlighted the atmosphere of the buffet. Following the luncheon, parents joined the community in cheering on the football team to a 21-3 victory over Rice Memorial High School. After the game, the parents proceeded to Mr. Mayo’s house where they mingled with teachers and students over a cup of tea. Despite its youth, the team’s members possessed skill and experience that make them a formidable power on the diamond. Tammy Armour’s dominating pitching led the team through a fabulous season, throwing a no-hitter in the State semifinals against Vergennes, only to lose. However, the standing ovations that the cast received were not just for trying the show, they were for putting on a fabulous production full of life and energy. Newcomers to the stage, such as Senior Rob Ward and Junior Lars Erickson demonstrated formerly undiscovered talent much to Mrs. Warner-Ashley’s delight. Academy Theatre veterans Jean Heald, Dan King, Colin O’Brien, Virginia Chipley, and Rachael Palacios performed as expected in their major roles, with characters as real as the city streets. The hours of rehearsal and the gallons of Dippidy-Do paid off with a tremendous display of macho, dancing, singing, acting, and entertainment. Jeffrey-51, 53. 57. 65. 88, 87 160 MY CREED by Dean Alfange I do not choose to be a common man, it is my right to be uncommon — if I can. I seek opportunity — not security. I do not wish to be a kept person, humbled and dulled by having the State look after me. I want to take the calculated risk, to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for dole. I prefer the challenge of life to the guaranteed calm of Utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficience nor my dignity for a hand-out. It is my heritage to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creation, and to face the world boldly and say, “This I have done.” . oubs insurance Compliments of LINCOLN INN RESTAURANT 20 Hastings Street St. Johnsbury, Vt. 748-5107 EHV WEIDMAN INDUSTRIES, INC.
