St. Johnsbury Academy St. Johnsbury, Vermont the human quality of education 2 Education is people: giving and getting. Buildings are important, so are courses, books and laboratories. But the human quality of education is the most important of all. 3 A good school believes that an individual should become sensitive to the world and the things in it. The students at that school should try to make a conscious choice for individualism with the ultimate goal of feeling personally significant and worthwhile. 5 sweet moments of unorganized time Life at a high calibre school moves quickly from one activity to another. There is a constant demand on a student's energies. Classes, sports, studies, extracurriculars and here and there — sweet moments of unorganized time. continued pursuit of personal interests A student should be recognized by what his abilities are and how he uses them. Regardless of a student's background, his schoolmates learn to respect a competent musician, a quick mind, a hardworking runner, or a fluent lingiust. Each student should have some good chance for respect among his classmates through the continued pursuit of his personal goals. 8 9 Any school of quality is concerned about its ability to convey both excitement and order in learning. Responding enthusiastically to such an environment provides us with the opportunity of growing out of differences in backgrounds and beliefs, geography and interests. And even if the student is impatient with the school at times, he is likely to remember it fondly. More than playing touch football in piles of autumn leaves, or skiing at Burke Mountain in the winter, or swimming at Emerson's in the spring, he'll remember the soul and spirit of that place and those days — for this is his school — for this is St. J.A. 12 for this is St. J.A. 13 yearbook dedication Mr. Stowe is a voice announcing the players at an Academy football game. He is the laughter of an entire classroom singing 'M' 'C delta 'T'. He is the patience of a teacher and student studying together long after 2:14. He is the pride of a scholar who races with his students for the solution to a problem. But most of all, Mr. Stowe is the enthusiasm, diligence and commitment to excellence that are St. Johnsbury Academy. With great appreciation, we dedicate our yearbook to . . . Mr. William Stowe 15 ADMINISTRATION Members of the Administration of St. )ohnsbury Academy include Vincent Durnan, Headmaster; Bruce Buxton, Associate Headmaster; Gary Moore, Dean of Students, Lou Gehlbach, Dean of The Vocational School. 17 MARK ASH SHARON BARBER LOUISE BEDOR JOHN BENOIT DONNA ALEXANDER: 2 27 77, Track, APEX, '78 Nova — Rally Sport, Blackberry, Last Chapel '80, BRAT, Lollie (Froggie) 3 17 80 Pvt. Within a period of a few, short months, the Class of 1980 and our school lost two of its most outstanding members. Sue Temple and Laurie Hook were the type of student that any school would be proud of. They were friendly, intelligent, committed and sensitive young women. They represented the finest ideals and aspirations we could ever hope for in ourselves. They loved their class and they loved their school — and we loved them. We'll miss them deeply. We'll think of them always. In remembrance of what they gave to us, the Class of 1980 would like to dedicate the Senior Section of its yearbook to these two, beautiful people . . . Under new head coach Rick Carlson, the Hilltoppers were spirited and optimistic through the early weeks of the season. However, injuries, suspensions, and morale problems dampened that spirit, leaving the out-manned Acads no match for their stronger opponents. The season started on the right foot for the Toppers, with a 30-14 win over Littleton in tne opening game coming on the heels of an impressive drubbing of Berlin in a pre-season scrimmage. However, the rest of the season was downhill for the green and white, as they lost the next eight games, giving Academy football just four wins in the three seasons following the departure of James Burlingame as head coach. The highlight of the season had to be the consistent hard work of an offensive backfield that gave even the toughest of defenses a run for their money. Tim Stanyon and Ray Gingue topped 700 yards for the season, while hardworking Mark Towle rushed for over 500 yards. Post season awards went to Dave Lepine — Best Lineman, Mark Towle — Best Back, Jeff Sawin — Most Improved, and Ray Gingue — Most Valuable plus the Jack Dunne Award. 48 ■w'mtv- t. • Front: J. The boys team enjoyed one of its best seasons in recent years while the girls did not fare as well. Coach Eaton's boys highlighted their season with wins over Littleton, Lyndon Institute and Lake Region (twice), in addition to a fine first-place effort in the North Country Coaches Invitational. While the girls only victory was over Littleton, they managed a respectable second in the North Country Coaches Invitational. Individually, the boys team was led by Richard Lamb, Peter Engle, Chip Langmaid and Duane Diefenbach. Lamb was the team's outstanding performer. As a sophomore, Richard piled up seven first place finishes in ten races, and finished the season with a ninth-place finish in the State Meet. Engle turned in seven finishes in seventh place or better, while Langmaid had eight finishes in sixth place or better, and Diefenbach chipped in with five finishes in ninth place or better. The girls' team was led by the trio of Pam Reganall, Sue Sargent and Lisa Wilkins, who turned in many fine performances. The girls were led by four seniors, Co-Captains Avis Hoyt and Sharon Gendron, Laurie Hook, and Pam Reganall. SOCCER The 1979 Academy soccer team bounced back after 1978's winless season with the best record in the history of the school. Led by Co-captains Ed Kelliher and Cam Eddy, and sixteen other seniors, the Hilltoppers staged a late-season rally that left them only one win shy of becoming the first Academy soccer team ever to qualify for post-season play. First-year Coach Bob Mallalieu guided the team to a 5-7-1 record which included two losses by the score of 1-0, and victories in three of the last four games. The highlight of the season was a three game win-streak which included a home victory of Hazen Union. It was considered by many to be the finest game ever played by an Academy soccer team. The team had many outstanding performers including talented offensive MVP Matt Lyon, Junior Rory Crimes, named Defensive MVP, and tough fullback Tom Lewis, who was named to the Division IV all-star team. Other players honored with post-season awards' were Phil Racine, most improved; Russ Brown, Most Hustle; Dale Laroque, Most Team Spirit; Joe Kasprzak, four-year dedication award. Many promising underclassmen will return next year, giving coach Mallalieu a good reason to be optimistic about the future of soccer at St. Johnsbury Academy. 52 Front: R. Lunt, D. Larocque, R. Ties frustrated the stick chicks all year long especially against North County Union. The Academy girls settled for two ties against the eventual state champion North Country team. The Hilltoppers did come away with two victories against both Peoples and arch-rival Lyndon Institute. The Academy bowed out in the first round of the State tournament, loosing narrowly to a well-drilled Essex team. The team was led by six seniors, including Co-captains Paula Churchill and Debby Talbot. The leading scorers for the green and white were Talbot with nine goals and five assists, and Andrea Hrynchuk, who scored six goals and had five assists Defensive standouts were goalie Alison Lote, who stopped 75 shots, and hardworking Margie Laferriere. 1979 also marked a personal milestone for head coach Rosina Wallace, who notched her 100th victory with-the season-ending J.V. triumph over Lyndon. She is to be praised for her hard work, dedication, and most of all for her love of the game. FIELD HOCKEY It was a rough start. Wouldn't you know it that our last season would break tne sixteen-year mark for the longest-awaited and least-fallen snow. Our snow chances even failed us. However, the Girl's Ski Team chorus pulled through again. With Purpleites and “My Favorite Things”, it upheld the team spirit needed to maintain the impressive record of our short but competitive season that devoted and enthusiastic coaches Nitsche and Duke managed to put together. Our spirit was also lifted by G.S. Jr. thrill shows and bags of green M M's. The boys, captained by Steady Eddie Kelliher and Jim Grappler Rideout, bonded their strength to form one of the strongest Alpine-Nordic combinations yet. The Nordic competitors, who grabbed eight of the top ten places in one of their tri-meets, were complemented by the Alpiners who carried strength and depth to claim fourth place in the stiff State Competition. The girls, captained by Andrea Spazz Hrynchuk and Avis Amos Hoyt, skied to a third place in the State Meet — a first in Academy history. This high standing would normally send the girls to the New England Meet — if there had been any snow. SKI TEAM BOYS SKI TEAM — Front: J. Kasprzak, J. Rideout, J.B. Corbitt, J. Lunt, T. Ayer, B. Led by high-scoring Manhattanites, Rory Crimes and Henry Dalrymple, the Hilltoppers set five Academy records as they rolled through an undefeated regular season. The team's only loss came after a school-record 21 game win streak as the 'Toppers bowed out to Essex in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Records set by the team include best record, 21-1; first undefeated regular season; most points in one game, 104 vs. Lyndon Institute; most points per game, average, 75. The team that Layne Higgs called the most talented Academy squad he'd ever coached was led by co-captains Bryan Cameron and Rory Grimes. Grimes, the team's Most Valuable Player, tied Henry Dalrymple for the highest scoring average with 22 points per game, while also averaging five assists and five steals per game. Dalrymple, the highest scoring freshman in Academy history led the team in rebounds with 16 a game, and also in blocked shots. Helping Grimes in the backcourt were steady seniors Bryan Cameron and Clayton Bullock, while Glen Davis, Bill Leavitt and Jim Clark added strong defense and rebounding power. The highlight of the season came with back to back wins over always-tough U-32. Both games were played at a furious pace before standing room only crowds. In the first game, played at Alumni Gym before the biggest crowd ever to see an Academy home game, Dalrymple's 20 rebounds and Grimes' heads ud play kept the Acads on top. Two weeks later at Barre Auditorium, the 'Toppers won again, this time riding the clutch shooting of Clayton Bullock. 58 BOYS' BASKETBALL Front: C. Bullock, M. Dionne, M. Brown, R. Grimes, B. Once again the girls' varsity basketball team enjoyed a successful season. Miss Wallace's last team at the Academy had only two seniors, but the girls made up for what they lacked in experience with spirit, hard work and togetherness. Senior co-captains, Paula Churchill and Debbie Talbot, led the Hilltoppers to a 14-6 record. In the state playoffs, the girls met the same fate as the boys team, losing to Essex in the quarterfinals. The bulk of the scoring was handled by Talbot and sophomore sensation Kim Silloway. Debbie led the team in rebounds and free throws while scoring most of her points inside against taller opponents. Kim's flashy ball-handling and textbook jump shot drew the admiration of opposing players and coaches as she led the team in field goals, juniors, Jen Thurston, Debbie Magoon and Michelle Carreau gave the team a trio of solid rebounders. Guards Paula Willey, Kathy Thurston and Tracy Warren played agressive pressing defense and always added hustle while they were on the court. Although the girls did not successfully defend their Hartford Holiday Tournament title, they did state a comeback against Stevens High School to take home a third place trophy. Kim Silloway was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament and hard-working senior, Paula Churchill, joined her on the all-tourney team. WRESTLING The Academy Wrestling Team has lived up to its winning tradition this year by posting a 12-6 record. This is one of the few times that we have whipped Spaulding twice in the same year. Leading the attack this year was a largely senior line up. Co-captains Dale Larocque and Steve Murray worked the team hard in practice while devastating performances by Dave Lepine and Jeff Nummelin racked up the points. Adding experience to the lighter weight classes and a little humor to the whole team were seniors John Montgomery and Kevin Armstrong. Not to be left out are Juniors Dave Keenan and Chris Larocque and sophomore, Paul Croteau who each filled key spots in this year's line up. A first place by Jeff Nummelin along with third places by Dale Larocque, Dave Keenan and Dave Lepine and sixth places by Steve Murray and Chris Larocque earned the team a fifth place in the State Tournament. The Most Valuable Wrestler for the year was Dale Larocque while sophomore Paul Croteau was named Most Improved. Next year's co-captains, Dave Keenan and Chris Larocque are left with a somewhat depleted team — but a winning tradition we're sure theyTI uphold. Front: M. Brown, P. Racine, Y. Nakanishi, M. The band marched at virtually every football game and in the town and district parades. In collaboration with the chorus, the band presented the traditional Christmas concert, plus a Pops concert, a chapel assembly performance and the Commencement Concert. The music department also sent twenty-one students to Districts, fourteen students to All-States, and this year six members of the chorus were accepted in the New England Music Festival. 107 ACADEMY THEATRE The '79-'80 season for Academy Theatre was a full and productive one. In the fall the group presented The Bad Seed.” Ingrid Owre filled the lead, supported by Jenni Karpin, Mary Ercole and John Conover. The winter months produced a one-act, This Property Is Condemned.” Peter Viles and Jenny Owre took this play to the Vermont One-Act competitions. In the spring. Academy Theatre presented its third major musical, South Pacific.” Louise Mold, Steve Murray, Ray Hoar, Sue Cotter, Mary Ercole and Mark McLaren filled the main roles in this elaborate production which brought in three full houses and three standing ovations. Unfortunately for all the students who have benefited under her guidance, the department's director, Mrs. Margaret Ryan, finished her final season with Academy Theatre. Every member wishes her good luck in the future and many thanks for her dedication and talent given to our theater group. ACADEMY CLUBS YEARBOOK STAFF — P. Derosier, S. Cheney, D. Caron, K. The seed of respect grew, friendship flourished with the seasons. It began with autumn's understanding, winter's serenity, spring's awareness, summer's warmth. And now, across from you I sit without words enough to tell you how I feel. 129 Today is the tomorrow we dreamt about at the beginning, somewhere in our past. Soft winds now caress us, laughter merrier than the sound of rushing mountain waters rings through our life, friendship and love of dear ones surround us . . . and we can see. 131 We can see so many beautiful things. Setting sunsets, beauty in a blade of grass, each other's right to be, sadness in a clown, little things. Dreaming dreams, singing songs, walking in the sunshine, wondering, wishing, sharing . . . 133 134 This is not an end, but a beginning. We've learned a great deal from the experiences we've shared in the last four years. Now, it's time to see just how much we've learned and how much we'll be willing to give to one another. Let us pledge to protect each other from the wintry winds ... to surround one another with delicate flowers in the vibrant springs ... to give each other comfort when the sultry summer suns bring warmth ... to enrich our walk in autumn with a carpet of golden leaves . . . and, most of all, to be near whenever needed with an outstretched hand an an open heart. 135 Every man has within him the ability to do great things. His touchstone is challenge. No matter what his field of endeavor, a man must measure himself against the demands of his world. To rise to the challenge — ultimately this is the reason men build bridges, climb mountains, and do a thousand other things that manifest personal achievement and satisfaction. The Yearbook Staff Peter Viles, Copy Editor Sharon Gendron, Layout Editor Margie Laferriere, Business Editor Robert Fiorelli, Advisor 136 Goodbye and Good Luck • • • English Department The English Department has a whole new look this year — its multi-year facelift complete. The changes seem major, but the underlying purpose and goal has not been altered: to equip each student with the knowledge and skills required to communicate. Communicating with others has progressively become more complex. The need to communicate more acute with each passing day. To keep pace with these developments, the English Department has rearranged itself. The stresses now fall into two major areas: 1) Written Expression, and 2) Traditional Literature. These two basic elements of an English education have been included into courses that every student is required to take. Thus guaranteeing that no one will slip through without getting at least a background in these areas. Every student is now required to take a writing course. In all other courses, all parts of writing are being stressed. Also, all students received a solid background in American, English, and World Literatures. The response has been positive: student advancement in these two vital areas is obvious since the program started. The needs of all students, from college prep to vocational and remedial, are being met. Because of its design, this new program will remain youthfully modern for a long time. No major changes are anticipated. Then again, no major changes have really been made. As Department Head Aldredge puts it, We've only restructed our values. The English Department consists of Jerry Aldredge (Chairman), Joyce Racenet, Bob Swartz, Charley Hegarty, Tom Brownell, Les Moore, Mary Ellen Caplan, and Bob Fiorelli. 141 Social Studies Department The Social Studies Department is designed to help students broaden their understanding of the social, political, and economic systems under which they live. To that end, courses have been constructed to meet the needs and abilities of students on all levels. By receiving basic knowledge of World and U.S. history, students are also given a foundation upon which they can build a personal philosophy in regard to their environment; and, in using this philosophy, can analyze the issues of the day. The goal of the Social Studies Department is to give students awareness, understanding, and personal opinion. All of these qualities are basic to anyone involved with the affairs of the community, or country. One way this goal is met is through the Close-Up program, which, for two consecutive years, has sent Academy juniors to Washington, D.C. for an intensive study of U.S. government. In this, and other ways, the Department strives to use, not just the classroom, but also the community as a setting for learning. The Social Studies Department will continue to meet these goals in future years by constantly evaluating and adjusting its program to stay in tune, not only with the social environment, but most importantly, with the student. 142 Members of the Social Studies Department include Sandy Murray, Rich Redznak, Chuck Paskert, Lou Daniele (Chairman), Layne Higgs, and Paul Chouinard. Mathematics Department The click of the keys is heard in the computer room while down the hall, angles, graphs, and equations occupy the papers of math students; their pencils sharpened, their minds alert. The third floor of Colby Hall — this is the scene of the Math Department. The department offers courses to meet the many needs of math students. There is remedial math for students who need extra practice with their skills, applied math, which covers basic algebraic concepts, and consumer math, math for everyday life. Students on a more advanced level are placed in one of the foundations or algebra courses. From there, one progresses to geometry or algebra-triginometry. Also, during the 79-80 year, ten students were enrolled in Advanced Placement Calculus. The math instructors feel that it's important to have student-teacher interaction concerning class matter. For example, Mr. Wilkinson's applied math class sometimes goes outdoors to survey, where each student is involved. And Mr. Conover, in the interest of junior and senior liberal art students, developed an elective semester course called Conic Sections. This course explores the history of math and deals with interesting applications of algebra and geometry. This last year, there has been renewed interest in the math and computer clubs. Most students are familiar with the interesting, (and sometimes frustrating) computer, which has expanded to cover not just mathematical situations, but also spelling and vocabulary drills, stock market quotes, and investment analysis. Math is not always glamorous, but with perseverance and a healthy interest on both teacher and student's part, the results can be rewarding. The Mathematics Department of St. Johnsbury Academy consists of Diane Rolfe, Jay Wilkinson, Dan Thurston, Gordon Bess, Lucille Byrne (Chairperson), John Conover, Nola Forbes, and Scotty Ingram. 145 Foreign Language Department What is the extra” course at the Academy — the course you're not required to take, but the one which many students find the most interesting offered? It's a language course; the program that lets a student submerge himself in a new and different culture, whether it be Latin, Spanish or French. Certainly the most interesting activities going on in the Language Department during the last year were those mystifying fascinating French trials held in the library. The French IV classes participated in and discussed such topics as divorce, nuclear energy and abortion. The advantage of the trials was that students were forced to speak French on the spot, and could use that situation to improve their speaking skills. The main theme practiced in the department is the value and importance of communication. Although a student will not scrutinize his activities or his goals; as he plays French scrabble, mille bornes, or practices his oral skills, he is learning that other cultures are simply different, not alien or inferior. After all, once you speak a foreign language, it isn't foreign anymore. 146 147 The Foreign Language Department includes Jesse Sotolongo, Kathy Harris, Wayne Majuri, Vince Durnan, and Bob Trottier (Chairman). Science Department The Science Department aims to provide every student with a degree of scientific knowledge to live in the technological society of today, and to be able to make the reasoned decisions demanded of today's populace. Each student is therefore required to take a minimum of two science courses. These are usually Earth Science and Biology, or Modern Aspects of Science. Beyond this minimal level, the Science Department offers courses for those who wish to probe deeper into the physical and biological principles of nature. These include Physics, Physiology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Energy; and these provide a wide range of rigor, depending on the student's ability, interest, and career goals. Especially for those who are interested in pursuing a scientific or engineering career, Advanced Placement courses are offered in Physics and Chemistry. The Science Department recognizes that science is not only a body of knowledge, but a method. To that end, each science course includes laboratory experiences. Having provided for all possible avenues of endeavor, the department is capable of preparing every student for the life style that he chooses. Not only capable, but also successful. 148 149 150 Business Department When people at the Academy hear the word Apex” they think of the Business Department — a department that is alive and strong, and in which many students participate. Apex is a program which lets students become actively involved in an office situation, one which they may encounter after graduation. Apex is recognized as one of the finest business courses in the state, and, due to its strong popularity, the department intends to introduce a second Apex next year and expand the program further. Business Department students have many rewarding opportunities. They can participate in typing and shorthand competitions against other high schools; they can help sponsor the ever-popular Apex Spring Fashion Show; and they have the opportunity to attain an office job, when local business workers come to Streeter Hall to interview students for community positions. Whether a student studies secretarial work, business management, or general consumer skills, he is bound to learn a valuable skill that will be beneficial through out his life. A school of the size and quality of St. Johnsbury Academy is necessarily made up of many people who have as their primary goal the ultimate enrichment of the young men and women in the student body. From our outstanding vocational department through our secretarial staff and kitchen workers, these men and women pride themselves on working for an institution that values commitment, dedication and hard work. On the next few pages are pictured some of these individuals. Their contribution to the Academy is unqualified and unstinting. Complete Insurance Service 53 Eastern Avenue St. Johnsbury, Vermont 802-748-2584 MY CREED by Dean Alfange I do not choose to be a common man, it is my right to be uncommon — if I can. I seek opportunity— not security. I do not wish to be a kept person, humbled and dulled by having the State look after me. I want to take the calculated risk, to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for dole. I prefer the challenge of life to the guaranteed calm of Utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficience nor my dignity for a hand-out. It is my heritage to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creation, and to face the world boldly and say, This I have done. PAUL W.
