Your wit and sense of humor have warmed our hearts. You have moved with the same spirit of change which has motivated all of us. To a Man of great character, a gifted and inspired individual, a noble and generous friend, the class of 77 affectionately dedicates this book. Mr. Jim Burlingame ST. JOHNSBURY ACADEMY - u ; i.'j w-'iim wkyi ; us tsv • • 1 1 Dear Graduates: Commencement marks an important milestone in your lives in that it signals the conclusion of a part of your educational lives and the beginning of another. During your years at the Academy you have had opportunities to learn, to grow and to mature. As your future opens to you, no matter where you will be, there will be countless new opportunities available to you and I am confident that you will seize these opportunities as a means to improve yourselves. As commencement arrives each year, we, at the Academy, find ourselves looking back over the past few years. We hope that they have been happy and productive ones for each of you. Although we are sorry to see friends leave us, we look forward with you to your future. Each of you has so much to give. Each of you has the potential for greatness and our world needs your contributions. I pray that your lives will be filled with happiness and that you will find success in all your undertakings. Come back and see us often and let us share in the excitement of your future. With affection, Vincent W. Football I The 1976 football squad showed a lot of power for their size. They were small and strong, although the final 4-4 record did not show it. The season began with a close game against Burlington. Unfortunately, St. J. lost, but they showed the rest of the state that the Academy squad was one to be taken seriously. A big upset occured against South Burlington, the powerhouse of the North. The Academy won the game. The highlight of the year, however, was our victory over Lyndon Institute—27-0. It was the fourth year in a row that we had beaten our arch-rivals . Many valuable seniors on the squad will be missed next year. Co-captains Andre Bouffard and Craig Racenet were elected to the All-State Team. Craig and offensive tackle Shaun Lernihan had the honor of being named to the Vermont Shrine Team. Other seniors leaving the Academy include Michel Cingue, Fred Bugbee, |im Wellons, Rod Bates, Steve McGinnis, Rick Smith, Dan Bellavance, Bob Guilding and Jeff Isham. Probably the most valuable loss to the Academy will be that of Coach Burlingame. After twenty-one years of coaching, he is retiring. Few men are as loved and respected as |im Burlingame. We'll miss him very much. Front: M. Cingue, D. Shields, K.K. Coombs, 6. Snow, V. Pulsifer, R. Cote, G. Lepine, B. Gilding, C. Watkins, T. Prevost, C. Wood, S. McGinnis, |. Wellons. Center: C. The program had the largest turnout it has ever had—over fifty boys. The season ended with a 3-7-2 record which by no means reflects the quality of soccer that was played. The captaincy was shared by Fred Parks and Dennis Desrochers, two seniors who will be greatly missed on defense next year. Three of the team's players were selected to the All-North Soccer Team. They were Noble Allen, center forward, Dennis Descrochers, center halfback, and Randy Pulling, goalie. Other seniors who will be missed next year are Bruce Bowman, Jim Senecal, Bob Jenks, Jerry Prevost, Marc Marinelli, Phil [Daniels, John Stringham and Dave Smith. 52 Front: M. Marinelli, P. Hahn, F. Borgstrom (manager). 53 Cross-Country The fall of 1976 produced success for both the boys' and girls' cross-country teams. Seventeen students competed for the team: ten boys and seven girls. Ed Dean set a new record for an Academy student on the home course after three close misses. Several team members were able to achieve their goals for the year. Balanced performance brought satisfaction as a team. Lucy Simpson, who has been the backbone of the girls' team for the past tour years, ran her usual strong races in leading a team of underclassmen. The year saw a great deal of improvement in times. Front: B. Whittaker, P. Dean. B. Way.). Bailey. S. Ayer, E. Dean. Center: L. Simpson. M. Ellis, |. Vandervelde, E. Keen. V. Durnan, K. Ash, Coach Eaton. Back: F. Stringham, V. Gendron, D. Tabor, A. Hoyt, L. Hook, S. Cendron. 55 The girls’ field hockey team, coached by Rosina Wallace, was again successful this year. The team made it to the Vermont Championship Playoffs and lost to Hartford High School in a very close game. The girls' final record was 9-3-2. The captaincy of the team was shared by Brenda Wilkins and Susan Perry. The highlight of the season was a 2-2 tie with Essex (unction-one of the best teams in the state. The team lost ten valuable seniors, the largest number lost to graduation in many years. However, a very strong and talented bench remains and with it a very enthusiastic ).V. team which will be an important part in next year's team. Field Hockey Front: Coach Wallace, S. Only one starter managed to play in all twenty games with several players missing five or more for various ailments. As a result, the team compiled a 5-15 record; not enough victories for a post-season berth. Doug Thurston (co-captain, leading scorer) and Randy Pulling (leading rebounder) shared the Most Valuable Player Award. Both return next season as three-year starters. Senior Jim Senecal was awarded the Coaches' Hilltopper Award for marked improvement over his four year basketball career. Other seniors who finished their stints in the basketball program were Andre Bouffard (co-captain), Jim Wellons, Craig Race-net and Dan Bellavance. Front: M. Cutting, C. Rodd, A. Bouffard, |. Wellons, P. Cowens, C. Carroll, R. Singleton. Back: E. Robillard, S. Ayer, R. Pulling, D. Thurston, N. Crump, C. Racenet, J. Senecal, Coach Higgs. 59 Wrestling 1976-77 was a fine season for the Hilltopper Crapplers. A 14-3-3 dual meet record with second place finishes in the Green Mountain League—East Division and the State Tournament behind Champion Spaulding High School. Though the Academy failed to crown an individual champion for the first time, the second place finish was truly a team effort as they placed ten of their 12 wrestlers: second place to Juniors Peter Hahn and Mitch la-motte; third place to Soph Mike Porcello and Junior Dave McFarlin; fourth to Soph Jeff La-mothe and Junior Bill Chesbrough; fifth from Senior Heavyweight Shaun Lernihan; and sixth from Senior Co-Captains Jeff Bailey and Karl Smith, and Soph Chris McElroy. With 7 of 10 placewinners returning plus a fine group of talented underclassmen with a year of experience behind them, the 77-78 team promises to be exciting and a definite threat to unseat State Champ, Spaulding. 60 Sitting: P. The remaining members of the squad moved up from last year's )V team. They were juniors Arlene Abadi, Paula Brown, Diane Bouffard, Denise Chaloux, Sylvia Dodge and sophomores Teal Isham, Karen Westover and Patty Wood. The varsity season record was 10-7. We lost our opening game against White Mountain by one point after double overtime. That set the pace for a fighting season. We were runners-up in the Blue Mountain Holiday Tournament. Our season ended with a Class L playoff game against Mississquoi. Front: C. lynaugh, A. Abadi, N. Poulos, S. Dionne, B. Wilkins, T. Marceau, P. Brown, S. Perry. Back: P. Paige, D. Chaloux, D. The girls built all year and finished fourth in their districts, thus earning a spot in the highly competitive state meet. Sue Dodge, Lucy Simpson and Delsie Hoyt were standout skiers. All but three of this year's team are able to return. With this fine group of underclassmen returning, the prognosis for the years to come looks good. The boys' northern competition ended with wins over all except. New England Champion, Lyndon Institute. The team took second in their regional meet and the cross-country team repeated this performance at the state meet. Some fine skiers will be lost to graduation but, as with the girls, support from the underclassmen should supply strength for next year. Special mention should be given to our outstanding skiers Dave Simons, Dennis Desrochers, Tom Sherman, Bob jenks—all seniors—and Keith Shortsleeve, Bill Snow and Mark Desrochers (luniors). Members of the English Department include Tom Brownell, Terry Cantor, Mary Ellen Caplan, Bob Fiorelli, Charles Hegarty, Jerry Aldredge, Cary Moore, Les Moore, Joyce Racenet, Bob Swartz and Bruce Buxton (Chairman). English Department You are a very unusual person. No one can stand where you stand, know what you know, feel what you feel, be what you are, or do what you do. Think of that for a moment. No one can do, be, feel, know, or think exactly as you can. That makes each one of us a very unusual person. The highest honor that could be bestowed has been granted to each of us, the honor of being a special person without a duplicate. ‘Quotations in this section are taken from the work of Harold ). Drown. 157 Instructors in the History Department include Paul Chouinard, Peter Graham, Layne Higgs, Sandy Murray, George Plummer, Richard Redznak and Lou Dainele (Chairman) 158 No one ever lived a great life or accomplished any great thing who did not give more of self and time and energy than was expected, more than he was paid for. It is this little bit extra that spells the difference between a life that just gets by and a life that leaves the world a little richer, a little better, and a little happier than when that person came in to it. 159 Science Department Hope is the belief we have in our dreams plus the courage to work toward their fulfillment. Without this belief and without this courage our hopes will remain only dreams, and as such our hopes become pacifiers lulling us into a false sense of security. Hope is really the other half of our dreams. It is the working half. And hope is that quality in us that acts as a telescope to look through and beyond our troubles to some good end. It does not eliminate the troubles, but it does cast a light through and beyond them to give us courage to fight on. Members of the Science Department include Howard Crawford, Alden Eaton, Bruce Hoyt, Ed Kennedy, Robert Nitsche, Ernest Racenet, Richard Roosa and William Stowe (Chairman). The Mathematics Department consists of the following members: Cordon Bess, Wayne Achilles, John Conover, Thomas Ingram, Dianne Rolfe, Charles Thurston, Paul Wilkinson and Lucille Byrne (Chairman). Mathematics Department The world is so full of people who believe in a lot of things a little bit, but not in anything very much. And anyone who does not believe in something wholeheartedly has no goals, no ideals, and no future. But the person who believes in something good with all his heart and might is on his way—and will enjoy the trip. _ 163 Foreign Language The world is filled with secrets, wonderful secrets of power and beauty undreamed of. And it is our privilege to find those secrets and to release them to the world. This is what learning is for. Each person is born to discover some small part of the secrets of life. 166 Members of the Business Department include Nancy Bellefeuille, lack Cummings, Mary Beth Lane, Gerald Richards and Maybell Peck (Chairman). Business Department It is our responsibility on this earth to throw a friendly arm about the shoulders of one who is stumbling and to speak a word that will tell that person that here is a friend. That may be all that is needed to bring him back, to lift his spirits, and to make the sun shine for him. I seek opportunity— not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the State look after me. I want to take the calculated risk, to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for dole. I prefer the challenge of life to the guaranteed calm of Utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficience nor my dignity for a hand-out. It is my heritage to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creation, and to face the world bodly and say, This I have done.
