Lamp 1976 St. Johnsbury Academy St. Johnsbury, Vermont Somewhere, there's a world to cling to Somewhere, there's a song to sing to Somewhere there is laughter Somewhere there is truth Somewhere there is happiness Somewhere Somewhere there is hope Somewhere there is a dream It is comforting to know that whatever happens, whether good or bad, there is a friend who will understand. The class of 1976 dedicates its yearbook to ... Raymond Frey ST. JOHNSBURY ACADEMY Dear Graduates: It is a distinct pleasure to be able to extend my best wishes to you in your yearbook. Your graduation is indeed a milestone in your life and it marks a dramatic change for each of you. Some will be going on to further study at a university and will find new challenges and opportunities in further formal education. Others will immediately enter the world of work with equally important challenges and opportunities. Your years at the Academy have provided you with significant preparation for the future. Although your academic work has been important, the greatest lesson we hope you have learned is apart from the standard curriculum. This lesson is simply that your education cannot end with the completion of school. It must be a constant process lasting throughout your life. Remember, that to cease to grow is indeed to die. As you leave the Academy we wish all of you success in your future lives. Our wish is simply that you find happiness and worth in your endeavors and most especially that you keep growing. May God bless your activities and may you realize your fondest dreams. We will miss you and we hope you will come back often to see us. -VSTIOHKSBURY VLRMOX'I 0: S19 AREA 802iT4S-Sl?l June, 1976 Very cordially yours, Vincent W. It was a gutsy performance by a young squad which refused to fojd after a dismal start. The performance was so good it gained Coach Jim Burlingame runner-up spot in the coach-of-the-year voting. He was beaten out for the honor by his former Academy player, Bruce Wheeler, who coached Essex Junction. Capt. Jay Ballard led the Academy to a thrilling victory over rival Lyndon Institute in the final game. On a long pass play Lyndon took a 13-7 lead with less than two minutes to play. Thirty seconds later Capt. Ballard faded back and threw a long strike to Jim Wellons who raced into the end zone untouched. With the count knotted 13-13, big Allen Jeffrey, 220-pound lineman, calmly booted the point after attempt between the goal posts and the Academy had a well-earned 14-13 win over a good Lyndon team. Besides Ballard, valuable Seniors who will graduate include: Mike Bouffard, Mat Darling, Rick Wood, Rick Marcotte, Allen Jeffrey, Bernie Gingue, Dave Taylor, Nick Bohlen, Dave Wakefield, Ron McCabe, Greg Aldrich, Vince Lepine and Craig Armstrong. As a result, the team had to do a lot of rebuilding. Even with that disadvantage, we did surprisingly well since we were led by co-captains Randy Parrish and Steve Donna. Two other seniors, Russ Desilets and Stuart Hoyt, will be sorely missed next year. The surprise of the season turned out to be a newcomer from Canada, sophomore Bruce Way. According to Coach Hegarty, Bruce will develop into one of the best runners in the state of Vermont. For the first time in Academy sports, the Cross-Country team was made up of both boys and girls. They got along surprisingly well and shared their successes and failures with consideration and understanding. On the whole, a very good year. Back Row: Co-captain Steve Donna, Stuart Hoyt, Russ Desilets, Stephen Keene, Bruce Way, co-captain Randy Parrish, Cort Stanyon. Middle: Ed Dean, Todd Spaulding, Paul Dean. Front: Robin Drown, Mary Clark, Valerie Gendron, Sally Carlton. Missing: Lucy Simpson. 54 Soccer With enthusiasm and hustle in all of their games, the soccer players showed an improved team and season record (2-8-1). Coach Sanborn cited a fine defensive unit, but a lack of scoring by the offense proved to be the difference between victory and defeat. The team was led this year by Senior co-captains Randy Bunnell and Marty Fortin. Other Seniors who will be missed next year are Victor Cruz and Marcel Lapierre. First year goalie, Randy Pulling, payed well in the nets throughout the season and he was a unanimous choice as the top goalie in the league. Next year’s team looks to be good with many returning lettermen and good upcoming JV players. The team is still young but a successful future seems to be in store. Front Row: P. Cowens, K. After eliminating South Burlington, the Academy faced another talented Middlebury club and lost in a close game. The Green and White squad had only four Seniors and these girls, Lorrie Ash, Dot Robinson, Kathie Pike and Kym Shortsleeve, shared the captaincy. The final record for the season was an impressive 9-3-2. Coach Wallace will have a veteran nucleus returning for next year. Among the Juniors coming back are: Carol Barrett, Donna Bauseh, Michelle Cote, Carol Bean, Sue Dionne, Mary Jeffrey, Debbie Parker, Diane Parker, Sue Perry, Kellie Shortsleeve, Brenda Wilkins and Terri Marceau. Sophomores returning include Sue Dodge, Sylvia Dodge, Delsie Hoyt and Trish Kasprzak. 58 First Row: J. Goss, M. Dennison, K. Westover, D. Reed. P. Wood, M. Russell, H. Hubbard, K. Gehlbach. T. Isham. Patenaude, P. Bellavance, Asst. Coach Trebilcock. Missing: D. Shields, B. Sayer. 60 The Academy wrestling team has lived up to their expectations this year by posting a 10-4 record. They avenged a home loss to arch rival Spaulding by whipping them at Spaulding on the 29th of January. Leading the team this year are a group of powerfully devastating seniors. Co-captains Gary Parker (17-4) and Matt Darling (19-6-1) have been providing most of the power along with Nick Bohlen (21-4) and Ray Young (21-3). Keith Hubbard (14-2) is coming on strong recently after breaking his nose early in the season. Also doing very well this year are sophomores Dave McFarlin (15-6) and Peter Hahn (14-4). They have given added punch for the lightweights that is needed for a balanced attack. Not to be left out are Junior Jeff Bailey (18-7-1) and Senior Mark Wilkins (17-8-1). Both of them have come up with important victories during the season. A first place by Keith Hubbard, seconds by Matt Darling and Ray Young, and many other fine performances by Academy wrestlers earned the boys a third place in the State Meet. 61 Boys’ Basketball This season has been a little disappointing yet promising for the Hilltoppers. With a 2-13 record, you would think that the team had trouble putting the ball in the hole, but even during times of defeat the 'Toppers have shown improvement. The team plays many big basketball school which outpower us in every aspect, but we have given many of them a run for their money by pulling off some rather close games. One of the highlights of the season is the big victory over Winooski. The Hill-toppers pulled off a big upset, defeating them 59-46. The five starters played a good team game as well as individually. The only other win for the Academy was against CVU. Even though they trailed most of the way, they finally got it together winning 45-38. Front: Steve Thurston (Co-capt.), Erich Pearson, Greg Carroll, Jim Wellons, Andre Bouffard, Steve Leavitt. Back: Scott Stetson (Mgr.), Mike Bouffard (Co-capt.), Jim Senecal, Doug Thurston, Randv Pulling, Craig Racenet, Paul Weiner, Layne Higgs (Coach). 62 Girls’ Basketball i This year’s basketball team has had its ups and downs, but it has been very impressive at times. The girls have come off with some big victories as well as some close losses, but their 9-7 record has earned them a playoff spot in Class I tournament competition. Perhaps their biggest win of the season was when they stunned the Vermont State Defending Class I Champions, Hazen, 45-44. The girls worked well together to pull off that win. During the season they beat North Country, Lyndon, and Sacred Heart twice, and every other team once, with the exceptions of White Mt. Regional and Lamoille. In their playoff game, the Hilltopperettes unfortunately lost a good game to Lamoille, their third defeat by Lamoille. Standing: Lorrie Ash (Mgr.), Michelle Cote. Marion Stuart. Kathie Pike. Dot Robinson, Brenda Wilkins, Nancy Poulos. Barb Smith, ir-ginia Johnson (Coach). Kneeling: Terri Marceau, Susan Dionne. Diane Somers. Laura Irving. Susan Perry. 65 Ski Team The high pre-season expectations of the boys’ and girls’ ski teams have no less than been met, and in many cases been considerably surpassed. Those hours of extra effort in practice sure have paid off when race times has come around, especially when the team has faced such tough teams as the New England Champion, Lyndon. The alpine squad, which previously was feared to lack experience, has demonstrated remarkable improvement in winning many meets. The ’’defending” state runner-up cross-country squad has as expected led everybody short of the team up ihe river. All in all, our ski team is a successful and well-balanced squad that the Academy should be quite proud of. Front: K. Rodliff. K. Shortslceve, T. Spaulding. B. Stetson, L. Simpson, C. Marinelli, M. During the fall, the Band appeared at all the home football games bringing spirit to the St. J. fans. In the winter, the talented Jazz Band played at the basketball games. Also, the Academy and Town Bands participated in a very successful Bicentennial Concert. The spring was highlighted by the annual district and state parades held in Newport and Burlington. The biggest events for the band this year were playing in the President’s Parade in Washington D.C. on July 3rd and in the Nation’s Bicentennial Parade in Philadelphia on July 4th. The St. Johnsbury Academy Band and its three drill teams were very honored to represent Vermont in these parades. All in all, a very outstanding year for our band. The Academy Band theatre Academy Theatre, an organization consisting of over fifty members, is dedicated to the presentation of drama as an art form. Three major productions are presented during the year and students learn not only the techniques of acting but also the finer points of costuming, make-up, lighting, student directing and publicity. This year Academy Theatre presented the mystery drama The Spiral Staircase, An Evening of One Acts and the comedy A Thousand CUmns. The one act The Cop and the Anthem, reached the regional competition in the Vermont One Act Play Contest. Academy Theatre is under the direction of Margaret Ryan. Its officers for the 1975-76 season were: Jim Loring (President), Karin Hammer (Vice President), Marie Laberge (Secretary). 117 Academy Clubs OFFICE AIDES-Front J. Reed, K. Pike, T. Laberge, M. Gaining experience by attending a UVM debate clinic in autumn and by holding weekly practices, the debaters set out to defeat the Berlin, N.H. team. The debaters enjoyed success as they captured second place in a Montpelier tournament. The highlight came when the Academy took second and third places in Deerfield, Mass. Tournament, competing against Phillips Andover and Taft of Connecticut. The team attended the Vermont Championships, too. Team members include B. Cirves, R. Dillon, B. Bowman, C. Sjolander, J. Lopo, S. Waldron, D. Olds, D. Brown and B. Bates. 1 19 Guitar Club The guitar club was formed seven years ago to attract students of various levels of musical ability. For the student with no prior instruction in guitar a beginner course is offered. Basic chords, progressions, finger picking and applications of these principles to popular music is the goal of this level of instruction. For the advanced student, informal gatherings are organized at which time students may exchange guitar techniques, practice simple harmony and hopefully enjoy music as a means of self-expression and achievement. 120 Front Row: D. Student Council The Student Council of the 1975-1976 year has had a good year in promoting activities and performing services for the school and community. One of the main events of the past year was another successful Career Day, where area businessmen make themselves available so students can ask questions concerning their particular career interest. Another successful occurance was that of The Spring Thing” where school groups and clubs were given the chance to raise money in a carnival atmosphere. A portion of the May day celebration went to the Band to help finance their trip to Philadelphia. The Council also supplied the means for the England Foreign Study Group to raise money to help fund their trip. The Welfare Committee of the Council has had a very active year compared to others. It was involved in raising money for both a CARE fund and a Guatemala relief fund. The Council had their eye always on serving as many people as possible, not only Academy period but those in the community and around the world. 123 First Row: M. Fisher, S. Isham, D. MW ' 11 faculty and staff Members of the English Department include Tom Brownell, Terry Cantor, Mary Ellen Caplan, Bob Fiorelli, Charles He-garty, Jerry Aldredge, Gary Moore, Les Moore, Joyce Kacenet, Bob Swartz, and Bruce Buxton (Chairman). English Department Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the mountains and the stars up above. Let them look at the beauty of the waters and the trees and flowers on earth. They will begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education. David Palis The Mathematics Department consists of the following members: Gordon Bess, Wayne Achilles, John Conover, Thomas Ingram, Dianne Rolfe, Charles Thurston, Paul Wilkinson and Lucille Byrne (Chairman). - A Mathematics Department Lord, who am I to teach the way To little children day by day, So prone myself to go astray? I teach them Knowledge, but I know How faint they flicker and how low The candles of my knowledge glow. I teach them Power to will and do, But only now to learn anew My own great weakness through and through. I teach them Love for all mankind And all God’s creatures, but I find My love comes lagging far behind. Lord, if their guide I still must be, Oh, let the little children see The teacher leaning hard on Thee. Leslie Pinckney Hill 161 Science Department 162 I do not know what I may appear to the world but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a prettier shell or a smoother pebble than ordinary whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me. haac Newton Members of the Science Department include Howard Crawford, Alden Eaton, Bruce Hoyt, Ed Kennedy, Robert Nitsche. Ernest Racenet, Richard Roosa and William Stowe (Chairman). Instructors in the History Department include Paul Chouinard, Peter Graham. Layne Higgs, C. Sanford Murray, George Plummer, Richard Redznak and Louis Daniele (Chairman). 164 History Department We must not make the past the only light for the ensuing years. A new leaf must be turned and new ideas read. We must hear things that have never been heard before. Thus will a new world arise. David Polis 165 Foreign Language Department The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness. If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.
