For the past ten years his art room has been the haven of many artistically-inclined students. Under his watchful eye many paintings, advertising posters, dance decorations, and other creations have emerged. During World War II, Mr. Frey served in the U.S. Navy for two years. In 1952 he received his B.S. degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he was captain of the varsity track team for three years. Before joining the Academy staff in 1957 he served as packaging consultant for a well-known package-designing and manufacturing firm, and was later engaged in evaluating art for the Tudor Press in Boston. At the Academy Mr. Frey is perhaps best known as “Coach Frey. His cross-country and track teams always produce an impressive record and have won several state championships in recent years. In appreciation for all he has done and is doing for the students of St. Johnsbury Academy, the Senior Class proudly dedicates the 1968 Lamp to Mr. Frey. 5 To the Class of 1968: You, the Class of 1968, are the 125th class to leave St. Johnsbury Academy to find your “place in the sun.” It is an unfortunate coincidence that you represent the fourth class to graduate during a 25th year anniversary faced with the awesome responsibility associated with armed conflict. In 1868, the first quarter century class left the school in the heat of the Civil War, an internal strife with wounds unhealed today. The graduates in 1918 were thrown full force into the fires of World War 1. The Centennial class m .1943 faced the challenges of a second world conflict. Here, in 1968. the Quasquicentennial class is deeply involved in a strange undeclared war with fantastically divergent public opinions. 1 hope you are better prepared to understand the world about you preceding classes. You have been given the tools with which to work and you counseletKo use these tools in your pursuit of a future goal. Howfyoti actually utilize the resources at your disposal will, in a great measure, be the evideiuteraTOr confidenc in you. Your task is great. Fortunately, your spirit and courage are equal to the rfs you leave this Academy, I cannot desire more for you than the perseverance ful future. My_£c y U cst wishes go to each of you. This concoction was left to simmer and stew until it exploded into one of the most successful L.I. weekends ever. Highlights of the annual occasion were a pep chapel and rally, a lively dance, a swinging party held at Bob Taplin's, and of course, the game itself. Thanks to the untiring efforts of the football team, we soundly trounced the Lyndonville team with a score 21-13. After the game, the band, majorettes and cheerleaders marched up to the Academy lawn where they announced our triumphant victory with songs and cheers. The old bell atop Colby Hall proudly rang out the good news while the L.I. spectators and team woefully departed for home. As Saturday evening drew to a close, the curtain dropped on a very exciting but exhausting weekend. A few sad smiles were exchanged among seniors as they realized that this was their last L.I. weekend together. 96 97 X mas With Bix The Best Ever, Thanks to Mr. Bix And The Class of '68!! 100 101 Could We Ever Forget? Winter 1968 ROYALTY KING: Jerry Rowe QUEEN: Mary Agnes Lanctot The Court Richard Hazen Tom Olds Diane Leroux Betty Groom 104 Carnival Thursday's assembly marked the opening of the Winter Carnival. The royal court raced down the aisle to the stage amidst cheers and applause. That night Cupid Jack Dole was crowned at the annual Cupid Dance. A variety of events to suit any talent took place during the week. Even the teachers participated, playing a hilarious basketball game with the L.I. teachers. Skiing, skating, and snowshoeing were some of the other main events. Also added to this year’s Winter Carnival was a new fea-ture-saucering. It was a huge success and will probably become a regular event. The Sno-Ball was held Saturday night in a beautifully transformed gym. The theme was a Birthday Party, so balloons, streamers, and party favors adorned the walls and ceiling. During the evening King Jerry Rowe and Queen Mary Agnes Lanctot were crowned and the awards given out. Cheryl Hoyt won the skimeistress award, and Craig Johnson the skimeister award. The Sophomore class came out on top, with the Juniors next, followed by the Seniors and finally the Freshmen. - Laughter Spills into Fun! The Committee The Fairbanks w The Gang from Qt. J.A. The general feeling was that the Hilltoppers lost everything this year. With only four starters and ten lettermen returning, everything pointed toward inexperience. The Hilltoppers traveled to Spaulding to open the season. When the tide went out, the score was 22-0 in favor of Spaulding. The Hilltoppers then realized that they had no super stars and big linemen this year. So they began to build, using pride, guts, determination, desire, and hard-hitting ability. With the help of the state’s best coaches, something came about: THE GREEN MACHINE! Eleven horsepower strong, it went on to crush Windsor. The next week they dined on Burlington’s Seahorses. Then they turned to B.F.A.’s Bobwhites, where they took the limit. Coach Burlingame then tuned the Machine for Montpelier. On leaving the Solons behind, the Machine heard the Falcons were in season and traveled to Newport again taking the limit. Rice’s Little Indians wanted revenge, but were cut off at the pass with a 7-7 deadlock. The Machine’s next encounter was with Lyndon’s Vikings, which were sunk by the hard hitting Green Machine. One might say that the ’67 season and team was made of three things: Willingness, desire, and pride. Bryer JV Football The junior varsity football team this year, coached by Mr. Murray and Mr. Gehlbach, took a while to get rolling. The team maintained the respect of all the teams but never quite put everything together until the last two games. The team did come through splendidly, though, to bear L.I.’s and South Burlington’s JV’s. The team had a lot of fun this season, and looks ahead to the Qcores Rice 7—13 Montpelier 6—31 Burlington 6—21 Spaulding 13—14 S. Burlington 12—7 L. Joe Laferriere, Rick Warner, Denison Amidon, Dave Jordan, Coach Frey The 1967 version of the Hilltoppers Cross Country team enjoyed a fruitful but busy year, with a 6-4 record and cramming ten meets into five and a half weeks. Joe Laferriere, a Senior, spearheaded the team with Denison Amidon, also a Senior, not far behind. Next came Rick Warner, Junior; Jim Bertolini, Sophomore; and Steve Parks, Sophomore. The other team members were Dave Jordan, Junior; Paul Fillion, Sophomore; and Steve Murphy, Sophomore. Fine prospective runners in the J.V. squad were: Larry McCauley, Tyler Trenholme, Tom Jordan, and Keith Emmons. These boys got in a few J.V. meets by themselves and raced extensively with the varsity. The Academy ran the season splendidly in view of the fact that there were only two returning lettermen and only the members of last year’s team back again on this year’s. This was definitely a rebuilding year, and Coach Frey did a magnificent job bettering last year’s placing in the state and also last years’s record. Rick Warner, Dave Jordan, Jim Bertolini, Steve Parks, and Paul Fillion will all be back next year with the hope of a much stronger team. This team will also be buttressed by the fine J.V. squad so we look forward to a promising ’68 Cross Country season! SCORES St.J. 25-----Wh.Mt. Academy Hilltoppers faced a very difficult situation. Gone from their previous year's state semi-finalist team were four regular starters and two reserves. In addition, the Hill-toppers were to play in the tough Division I of the Northern League. As tough as it seemed, however, there was optimism as to the season's outcome. Mike Johnson and Richard Hazen were the two players from whom much would be expected and hopefully the newcomers would help enough to carry the team into at least a tourney play off. It wasn't until the last week of the season that the tourney hopes were ended as the team finally ran out of games and wins and thus, for the first time in four years, were unable to be represented in tourney play. Individual category leaders were Richard Hazen with 173 rebounds, Mike Johnson with a field goal percentage of 43%, Mike Bergeron with a foul shooting percentage of 69%, and Phil Rutherford being judged the best defensive ballplayer. Mike Johnson and Richard Hazen were voted as the team’s most valuable ball players by the players themselves. In summary, a 6-13 record cannot be called a success. However, when we consider that the boys gave their all every game, we can be justly proud of their efforts irregardless of the final outcome. They were a real credit to their school; and if desire and determination were all that were necessary for a winning season, then the record would undoubtedly have been reversed. Bertolini, Ski Team This year’s ski team, under the coaching of Mr. Moore, had a great year. The team defeated Peacham, Hartford, Bradford, Lake Region High School, and the Lyndon Institute J.V.s. St. J. lost to Spaulding. At the Montpelier Invitational Meet, St. J.A. placed 8th out of 9 teams participating. The Northern District Ski Meet was held in Lyndonville. Steve Murphy placed 1st, Kyle Brown 2nd, Craig Johnson 10th, and Ken Stowe 13th in the slalom. In the overall standings of jumping, slalom, and cross-country, the final score found the Academy in 6th place out of 11 competing teams. A new addition to this year's team is a group of girls. The girls, led by Cheryl Hoyt and Pat Dilley, have done a great job in the slalom and downhill events. A meet with the Hartford and Bradford girls, found the St.J. girls winners by a large margin. In other meets the girls competed with the boys and found the competition and the courses more difficult. The ski team hopes to have an even more successful team for the next season. S. Murphy, C. The team, which is a young one with no senior members, put a great deal of time and effort into their practices. With stern rules and plenty of patience from the coaches, the girls managed to overlook skinned knees and bruised shins. Field hockey is an extremely rugged game. The only thing that was missing for a nearly perfect season was some loyal support from fellow students. The girls deserve all they can get. We hope that next year the girls will gain some support and make next season their best yet. Desrochers, P. O'Neil, L. Linehan, C.
