To The Class of 1967 During the past four years, we have shared some very valuable experiences and now, as we say good-bye, 1 am anxious to see you assume your role in an adult world. It would be simple for me to expound pleasant cliches, and it would be equally simple for me to charge you with the responsibility of finding a peaceful solution to a myriad of problems facing society. However, if I limit my remarks to these classics, you are cheated and 1 am blind to reality. For generations young people have eagerly sallied forth from their respective schools ready to accept the challenges of the future, but they have soon lost their energy and drifted toward mediocrity, settling for less than utopia. If this were not so, our world today would be free from civil and military conflict. As we mature, age tends to dull our enthusiasm and our experience with life often dampens the spirit. Once we were impulsive, restless, full of vitality. Now, we are reserved, restrained, and independently comfortable. You possess more than the enthusiasm of youth. You have the ability to think, to comprehend and in your analysis, you are capable of sound judgement. Don’t discard tradition until you are positive that your new choice can offer more to mankind. Be decisive in your actions and you will continuously improve your society. My best wishes to each of you. Sincerely,
”
