Skinner. Since 1952 Mrs. Skinner has patiently and kindly served the needs of the students, issuing absence and tardy slips, cough drops, and messages. Her office is a haven for all students seeking information and solutions to problems. All of us at the Academy will agree that Mrs. Skinner’s assistance has been invaluable to each and every one of us - without her willingness and understanding most of us would have had difficulty functioning as students of the Academy. It would be impossible to name the many acts of good will our Mrs. Skinner has performed for us--many beyond the call of duty. We hope by this dedication to express to her our recognition of how much she has enriched our life here at the Academy. Administration MR. WRIGHT MR. TWQMBLY ASSISTANT HEADMASTER BUSINESS MANAGER MRS. BLAKE MRS. RANDALL MRS. SKINNER Alumni Staff MRS. ZELLER To The Class of 1967 During the past four years, we have shared some very valuable experiences and now, as we say good-bye, 1 am anxious to see you assume your role in an adult world. It would be simple for me to expound pleasant cliches, and it would be equally simple for me to charge you with the responsibility of finding a peaceful solution to a myriad of problems facing society. However, if I limit my remarks to these classics, you are cheated and 1 am blind to reality. For generations young people have eagerly sallied forth from their respective schools ready to accept the challenges of the future, but they have soon lost their energy and drifted toward mediocrity, settling for less than utopia. If this were not so, our world today would be free from civil and military conflict. As we mature, age tends to dull our enthusiasm and our experience with life often dampens the spirit. Once we were impulsive, restless, full of vitality. Now, we are reserved, restrained, and independently comfortable. You possess more than the enthusiasm of youth. You have the ability to think, to comprehend and in your analysis, you are capable of sound judgement. Don’t discard tradition until you are positive that your new choice can offer more to mankind. Be decisive in your actions and you will continuously improve your society. My best wishes to each of you. Sincerely, So, basically... LOUIS V. DAN1ELE, B.S. Ed. ACTIVITIES Mr. Bix X-Mas With Bix Scores Again 88 This year's rendition of Christmas with Bix was an overwhelming success. The show included several talented performers who performed to a near capacity audience. Highlighting the sixteen act program were many fine presentations: Christmas with Peanuts, Paul Revere's Ride, Charlestown, and several others. Perhaps the best remembered scene will be the annual arrival of Mr. Bixby himself, this year on a donkey! The Lamp wishes to congratulate everyone who participated in Christmas with Bix for another enjoyable and entertaining evening of pre-Christmas fun and recognition of its real significance. Committee: B. Chase, J. Laferriere, T. Warren, M. McCauley, D. Reed, S. O'Neil, E. Dole, Mr. Bixby ( Bix ) World Of Make Believe First Place--1969 Second Place--1970 Third Place--1968 Fourth Place--1967 90 CARNIVAL COURT Winter Carnival The Winter Carnival was extremely successful again this year. The Freshman class took highest honors, with the Sophomore, Senior and Juniors classes following respectively. The festivities started off Thursday evening with the crowning of Cupid, Tom Olds at the Cupid Dance. Friday the skiing at Burke Mt. left the school desolate; Pam Gale, a Senior, won the skimeistress award, and Guy Grenier, a Junior, won the ski-meister award. The skating and snowshoeing events took place on Saturday morning, along with the judging of the snow sculptures. Saturday afternoon many students helped turn the gymnasium into a ballroom for Cinderella’s Ball that was held Saturday night. Diary '66-’67 Let me introduce myself. I am the late and almost forgotten Thaddeus Fairbanks. Three years ago the 1964 Lamp staff asked me to write the year's diary. Despite many previous engagements I heartily agreed. When I had finished, without so much as a thank you, the staff greedily snatched my masterpiece and promptly forgot all about me. Since then I have naturally refused other offers to again write the diary for following years. This year I have decided to relent amidst the tearful entreaties and supplications of the present editor. So as soon as some of the dust has cleared away, i'll begin the story of the 1966-67 school year. September 7 has arrived and with it the onset of over 700 excited students. Humph! None of the students have even glanced at me with the exception of a few curious freshmen. I just noticed a new face among the senior crowd. It must be Sylvie Bruxelles, the foreign exchange student from Lyon, France. I hope she enjoys her stay in St. Johnsbury. The football season has started with a smashing victory over Spaulding 27-7. We also defeated Windsor and Burlington in two exciting games. We really slaughtered B.F.A. 27-0! The next game against Montpelier featured another battle - the battle between the Green and White Bands. The White Band, under the directorship of Vandy Peters, won the contest, but the Green Band, under the guidance of Elaine Reed, did an excellent job. Also competing were the majorettes, with the Green Band majorettes coming out on top. After defeating Newport and Rice, we were ready for the long-awaited L. I. game. But victory slipped from our grasp in a close battle. All is not lost! I just heard we're the new state champions! Hurray for St. J. A. ! With all their enthusiasm drained, the student body didn't quite reach their goal in the Magazine Drive. But captains Denny Reed and Peg McCauley tell me they did acquire a large sum for the activity fund. 92 Diary Since I must remain at my post in Colby Hall, 1 couldn't see the Cross Country team in action. But, via the grapevine, I heard they did a tremendous job under Captain Car-roll Rousseau. It's now the middle of November and I see we have several visitors. Ten students have arrived from Mexico for a two-week stay in St. Johnsbury. They are staying in the homes of International Club members and homes of some of the Spanish students. I hear they’re having a marvelous time and are amazed at the snow. Everyone seems to be enjoying the Mexicans and have been pelting them with questions about Mexico. The next event is the annual December Concert put on by the Academy Band. Listening carefully, I hear strains of The Music Man flowing softly through the halls. Mr. Messier certainly deserves credit for presenting such a fine concert in so short a time. The senior class and Mr. Bixby put a great amount of work into the well-known Christmas with Bix. The various acts proved the student body does have quite a bit of talent (though sometimes I wonder). Comedy, music, and fun were combined to make this year’s performance one of the best ever. The junior class showed the other classes that they had school spirit by working together and raising enough money to buy lights to decorate the fir tree outside Colby. The Christmas Dance they sponsored was a success, although the money earned at this dance was not sufficient to pay for the lights. Another dance, later in the year, provided an ample amount. On December 21, the Glee Club and Freshman Singers put on their annual concert. Under the direction of Mr. Green, they sang some truly impressive songs. Now that the Christmas vacation has arrived, I can put down my pen and relax for a few days. 93 Diary Well, Diary, the vacation has ended and the mad rush before exams is on. I hear the basketball team is going strong, and the cheerleaders say we'll be state champs before long. 1 just heard the students didn't do very well on a speed reading test, so many of them are taking the Readak course. It's a 25-hour course taught by a Mr. Goss, designed to speed up one's reading rate. Today, I sent a group of band and orchestra members off to the Mt. Royal Music Festival. These students will participate in a huge concert next Sat. night in Mt. Royal. They'll have a good time, but from what I've heard of the hours and hours they spend at rehearsals, they deserve it. What’s that roar I hear in Fuller Hall? Oh, it's the beginning of the Winter Carnival. I hear the snow sculptures are quite original this year. Saturday night is the Sno-Ball where Queen Sue O'Neil and King Teddy Graham will be officially crowned by last year's royal couple. Well, what do you know, the Freshman Class up and won the whole carnival. Congratulations, freshmen! Now that it’s April, the band is getting ready for their annual trip. They’re traveling to Ottawa, Canada, this year. I've heard they have so much fun, I think I'll join the band. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to watch over the rest of the school until they come back. I heard from several track fans that the team is putting forth their best and are racking up the points. Keep up the good work, boys! As the year draws to a close, I see wistful seniors, nostalgically looking back over four fabulous years and dreamy-eyed juniors longing to become seniors. Sophomores hardly believe they're actually going to be juniors and freshmen can hardly contain their excitement at no longer being just freshmen. So, now I'll sit back and enjoy the summer until the mad rush of September is back again. 94 Our November Visitors — The Mexicans Last November the Academy had the great pleasure of hosting ten Mexican guests. They came under the Experiment in International Living and stayed for two weeks with students at the Academy. They visited sights around the state and the town and attended classes at the school. Several activities, such as dances, lectures, and tours, kept them and their hosts extremely busy during their short stay. The students were: Isabel Moreno, Mabel Olquin, Carlos Franco, Emma Monsalve, Francisco Javier Arriola, Felipe Del Rio, Annie Pisanti, Maria Laura Sasso, Leticia Juarez, and their leader, Miss Carmen Agudelo. 95 Boys' Dorm DORMITORY COUNCIL Chris Evans, Mike Hayward, Chris Rose, Tim Vallely BRANTVIEW DORMITORY Would you believe Ray Berry?? Sylvie Bruxelles, our AFS student, arrived from Lyon, France, to spend the year with the Alden Hull family and to attend the Academy as a senior. Sylvie got into the swing of things right away by joining the Band and playing the cymbals in the Shrine Parade, August 27. Since then she has taken part in many school activities. Sylvie is the youngest of six children, having four sisters and one brother. Her parents both studied law and her father is now a corporation lawyer in Lyon. Sylvie celebrated her eighteenth birthday early in February with two surprise parties, one with the International Club, and one with the town AFS chapter. Some of the many Vermont activities she enjoyed this year included skiing, sugar-on-snow parties, and cook-outs. The Lamp wishes Sylvie the best of luck when she returnes to France this summer and in the future. We hope she will remember all of us as fondly as we will remember her. 97 BOYS’ STATE B. Chase, T. On the August agenda was the Shrine Football game in which the Band participated in the pre-game parade. During the Academy football season, the marching band entertained the crowd during half-time and also participated in a green and white contest—the White Band won. In order to raise money for their exciting trips to Ottawa and to the Montreal Centennial Expo '67, the Band held its annual Christmas Concert and sponsored a big dance, plus many other activities. During February, the Band was honored to send some of its members to Mount Royal Music Festival and in May two students attended All-State. The Band is recognized as an important, hard-working organization under the leadership of a truly wonderful man and conductor, Mr. J. These aides perform such tasks as charging and shelving books, assisting in the processing of new books, reading the shelves (keeping the books in the proper order), and doing errands. Students may volunteer to work as library aides for one or two free periods a week. After one year of service they are entitled to wear the library pin, the motif of which is the traditional lamp of knowledge resting on a pile of books, with the guard for the pin showing the class numerals of each pupil. Through their work, library aides learn much about how to use a library, which will be invaluable to them either in college or in later life, and the library training they receive encourages them to appreciate one of man’s greatest tools of communication, namely books. This organization provides students the opportunity to learn how a government operates. It also gives students a chance to voice their opinions. Although Student Council has not appeared to have done a great deal materially, it has discussed many different subjects and has studied the constitution. The installation of suggestion boxes brought out ideas to discuss and to think about. Hopefully, a closer bond has been intertwined between the student body and, the Student Council, and between the Student Council and the faculty. The Council sponsored the annual Magazine Drive; a Variety Clothes Day on which students and faculty appeared in incredibly bizarre costumes; selling of nabs and milk during break, and noon; selling of coke and ice cream at basketball games. They also assumed the responsibility of overseeing all functions in Fuller Hall. Throughout the year, the Council's main goal was to promote the general welfare of the school. The Hilltoppers amassed an outstanding record of seven victories and one loss during this season. After the decisive opening victory of 27-7 against Spaulding, the Hilltoppers tuned up for the big battle with Burlington by belting Windsor 42-13 with a profound offensive display. They next tested their strong defense against Burlington's strong offense with a 27-20 win. The next victories were wins of 27-0 over BFA, 52-7 over Montpelier, and 60-0 over Newport. The Academy now had a record of six wins and no losses and was recognized as one of the top teams in the state. The so-called battle of the unbeatens between SJA and Rice was the biggest game of the season--the contest for the state championship. The Academy and Rice staged a defensive battle to a 7-7 deadlock in the first half and scored three times to register a 27-7 victory. The Academy next traveled to Lyndonville to meet our arch rival in the final game of the year. With both teams possessing superb and aggressive defenses, a strong defense game was expected. However, the performance of the offensive teams were also impressive. The result was a heartbreaking 7-6 loss for the Academy. Despite this loss to Lyndon, the Academy still climaxed one of their most successful football seasons in history by being named State Football Champions for 1966. 138 . J. The 1966-1967 basketball season proved a pleasant surprise to both the team and the fans. What most people felt would be a . 500 season, primarily because of a lack of height, turned out to be a good season with the club going all the way to the semi-finals of the Class L State Championships. Compiling an overall record of 15 wins and 8 losses, the season provided the Academy fans with more than their share of excitement. Two early season convincing wins over a much taller Lyndon Institute team seemed to indicate that the height disadvantage might not work against the Hilltoppers as badly as at first anticipated. Early in the season a double overtime loss to Rice Memorial and a four overtime win over Winooski High School left the fans buzzing about the possible success the Academy might achieve in the tough Class L Northern League. Hosting their Fourth Annual Holiday Tourney, the Hilltoppers took consolation honors after losing the opening game at the buzzer by a score of 63-61. Resuming the league games after the Christmas vacation, the Academy proceeded to score major upsets by defeating highly rated Burlington and a veteran Spaulding of Barre quintet. The regular season came to a close with an exciting 76-69 overtime win over an underdog but highly spirited Middlebury Union High School. At the season's conclusion, the Hilltoppers finished with 9 wins and 6 losses in the Northern League and 13 and 7 overall and was seeded fourth in the Northern Division of the State L Tourney. Drawing Burlington High School in the opening tourney round, the contest was rated a toss-up as each had a victory over the other in regular season play. The contest was a thriller as it went into overtime with the Academy eventually coming out on the top 64-57. The Quarter-finals found the hustling Hilltoppers going up against the number one team in the North, South Burlington. After the dust had cleared, the Academy had fashioned the upset of the season by knocking off the tall opponents 62-55. In the semi-finals, a tall, rangy, and fine-shooting Rutland squad ended the title aspirations of the Academy to the tune of 45-64. After the first quarter when the score read 13-14, the Red Raiders from Rutland took complete control of the contest by dominating both backboards and generally playing a better brand of basketball. An evaluation of the season shows some remarkable statistics. The team as a whole set an Academy record for field goal percentage with 616 shots made out of 1508 shots taken for a highly respectable . 407 average. Veteran guard Steve Lewis led the team in this category with 162 for 334 and a . 490 percent. From the foul line, the Hilltoppers shot 293 for 465 and a . 630 percent with Lewis again leading the team with a . 770 percentage. In the rebounding department, it was a case of a small Academy team out battling and out positioning the taller opponents 835 to 712. A1 Scoot Hanson led the team with 162 rebounds followed by Mike Johnson's 148 and Gareth Caldbeck's 136. In the scoring department, Captain Steve Lewis ripped the nets for 420 points and a 19.0 average per game. This in itself was a remarkable achievement in that he was a marked man most of the season drawing the opponents best defensive man. Tom Haver's 262, A1 Hanson’s 256, and Mike Johnson's 196 points also played a major role in the team's great success. The team averaged 66. 3 points per game while amassing 1525 points. The opponents scored at a 58. 4 rate while totalling 1344 points. Honors claimed by the team and its members were as follows: This team advanced farther in the Class L Tourney than any Academy team in history. Steve Lewis made the Holiday Tourney All-Tourney team and was a unanimous selection for the All-Northern League first team. Lewis also set a career mark for most points scored by any Academy ball player with 1153 points over his four-year high school basketball career. 144 The season's record was a credit to a very fine team play on the part of all members. Lewis, Havers, and Hanson were regular starters through the season while Marty Cowens and Mike Johnson alternated at one forward spot and Gareth Caldbeck and Dick Hazen very effectively filled the center spot. Without doubt, the people of St. Johnsbury could be justly proud of this Cinderella team of 1966-1967. In several meets this winter, they defeated Sterling, Lancaster, Peacham, and split with Bradford, although losing to the Lyndon Institute Junior Varsity. The ski team is mainly supplied by an abundance of underclass talent promising a strong future for the slalom, downhill and cross-country events. Further improvement in the jumping event is expected in future years. Steve Dodge, Howard Robinson, Guy Grenier, Craig Johnson, and freshman Ken Stowe paced the way for the ski team. In the Northern District Meet, the ski squad placed eighth against very stiff competition. Considerable success can be expected next year after the young talent gains experience.
