As you leave we salute you, and remind you that this is really the Commencemnet, not the end. The beginning of a new order of things: higher education, a place in the economic life of your country, a stint in the armed forces. In all of these you will have an opportunity to use what you have learned and more important, to add to what you have learned. We hope that as you go on, you will remember what you have learned here, add to it, and become an active and loyal member of the Alumni Association—thus to help your school increase in service and benefit those who will come after you, just as thousands who came before you have helped you. The members of the Lamp starting next year will be chosen on a point basis. The member with the most points after selling advertisements and composing write ups will become Editor in Chief. Students to be eligible for this club must attain an average of 80 in English. The entire Lamp satff worked hard this year putting these memorable events into a year book which will be the souvenir of school life which you'll cherish forever. So have fun reading the Lamp this year as well as fifty years from now. — 55 — THE LAMP 1961 The Academy Student Published five times a year, the “Student” is our school newspaper. All of the issues are packed full of the latest news, sports, and creative writing. We all enjoy reading the old standards and the many new features that appear in the Student.” EDITOR—Pauline Lillicrap Assistant Editor—Sue Gagne News Editor—Linda Calkins Feature Editor—Mary Eilen O’Brien Business Manager—Barbara Black Exchange Editor—Sue Rix The advisors to this year's Student” were Miss Clark and Mr. Jacobs. — 56 — THE LAMP 1961 Debating Club President—Lane Morgan Vice-President—Pat Neary Secretary-Treasurer—Nick Morrill The Debating Club this year had one very unusual characteristic in that most of the members were novices. The novices gained much experience and had a very successful year. They participated in the Speech Contest sponsored by the V. F. W. and attended meets in Montpelier, Swanton, and Burlington. The club has worked hard this year and hopes to attend more meets and attract more new members next year. Much of the Debating Club's success can be credited to the advisor. Mr. Victor Quinn, who has worked constantly with the group. — 57 — THE LAMP 1961 Dramatic Club President—Denise Russo Vice President—Tito Camacho Secretary—Chris Walther We are certainly proud of the Dramatic Club this year! Under the direction of Mr. Snapp, the Dramatic Club presented a One-Act Play contest March 18 in Fuller Hall. Three plays were presented, ‘ Footfalls,’’ directed by Mr. Plummer: and “Patterns and “More Perfect Union, directed by Mr. Snapp. The winning play Footfalls” represented the Academy in the District One-Act Play contest. Our luck and our talent were running high, for we won the District Contest. The Dramatic Club deserves the congratulations and support of all of us for bringing more honors to the Academy. — 58 — THE LAMP 1961 Student Council PRESIDENT: Eugene Dionne Secretary: Bonnie Covell Vice-President: Curt Utton Treasurer: Linda Calkins Asst. Treasurer: Chris Walther Faculty Advisor- Mr. Pierce. Jr. The Student Council is the governing body of the students of St. Johnsbury Academy. It performs such duties as sponsoring student activities, chartering clubs, awarding letters, and making laws. This year the Student Council sponsored a very successful Magazine Drive, and assumed responsibility for the Talent and Skit Show. This went over very well with both faculty members and students and promises to remain an annual event. It has been a very successful year for the Student Council, and we sincerely appreciate the work its members have done for the Academy. — 59 — THE LAMP 1961 Monitors’ Club The St. Johnsbury Academy Monitors are at work each and every day. They are the natural boosters and watchdogs of our school. Elected by the students, they have pledged themselves to uphold the honor and dignity of their school. The weapons that they use to carry out their pledge are the respect that they have earned and the warning system. In many schools the Monitor Club has been abandoned because of lack of interest and pride in the school. The Academy Monitors are a great excep tion to this rule. They have earned the support of both the student body and the faculty. I his year's Monitors’ Club has done its job well and proof of this is the excellent physical condition of the school and the overall morale of the stu dents. — 60 — THE LAMP 1961 Science Club Have you not read or heard about Our rockets there in space? Yes, Russians and Americans Have started a rocket race. I heard them say, “It won't be long Before space we'll conquer soon. Tell me, “What next shall man commence When man has reached the moon? For the answer to this and also more, I spent time at St. J. A. A Science Club I was told they had That labored from day to day. I later experienced an eventful hour. Their projects they showed to me. I knew as I left, because of these students, America should always be free! Congratulations, Science Club members! May the knowledge you have gained here go with you always as you strive to make this nation a safer place in which to live. — 61 — THE LAMP 196 1 The Art Club President—Marcia Perry Vice President—Marilyn Dwyer SECRETARY—Denise Russo Treasurer—Peggy Smythe Wouldn't you like to join our Art Club’ There's no club like it! With a membership of twenty, this year was filled with fun and work. Remember those posters for the Snow Ball? Nice, weren't they? We don't wish to seem prejudiced, but they were created by our members, as well as numerous others for food sales, dances, and other activities. Exciting events are brought to life by the work of these talented students. Indeed, they deserve our credit! — 62 — THE LAMP 1961 Future Homemakers Boys and girls studying homemaking in high schools of the United States and its territories have joined together to form the national organization of the Future Homemakers of America. Because our homemaking course here at the Academy is not open to boys, only girls who have taken or are taking one year of homemaking are invited to become members of this chapter. The Goals of Future Homemakers of America-. (1) To promote a growing appreciation of the joys and satisfaction of homemaking. (2) To emphasize the importance of worthy home membership. (3) To work for good home and family life for all. (4) To encourage democracy in the home and community life. (5) To promote international good will. (6) To foster the development of creative leadership in the home. (7) To provide whole-som individual and group recreation. (8) To further interest in home economics. — 63 THE LAMP 1961 Front—M. These Seniors, chosen by a committee consisting of Academy faculty members, are selected on the qualifications of Character, Scholarship, Leadership. and Service. Inasmuch as only fifteen per cent of any given class is eligible, these students deserve the admiration of all for their consistent high standard of citizenship and scholarship during their attendance here at the Academy. This year's Honor Society Students are: Edna Achilles, Elaine Aus- tin, Barbara Black, Eugene Dionne. Marilyn Dwyer, Carole Fuller. Carol Grady, Daryl Hance, David Haskins. Daniel Laferriere, Pauline Lillicrap. Alan Marsceill. Patrick Neary, Gary Potter, Barbara Reed, Denise Russo, and Marion Waterman. — 64 — THE LAMP 1961 Varsity Club One of the more active clubs this year was the Varsity Club. Composed of lettermen from the various sport fields which the Academy has to offer, they are representatives of acheivement and ability in their particular sport. Again this year the Varsity Club launched their Heart Fund drive under the guidance of their advisors, Coaches Burlingame and Ryan. It was a complete success and gained wide recognition and acclaim from the townspeople and the drive chairman. A few lettermen will be leaving as of June but many prospects are appearing in the underclassmen and should be soon filling their shoes. Good luck in the future, boys!! — 65 — THE LAMP 1961 Giles’ Athletic Association PRESIDENT: Rossana Vigneault SECRETARY-TREASURER: Diana Dawson VICE-PRESIDENT: Sharon Deblois Class Representatives: Seniors—Sue Duncan and Jacki Sanriglia Juniors—Wanda Jenness and Andrea Fyfe Sophomores—Susan Heath and Donna Daley Freshman—Carol Dawson and Bonnie Rix An eagerness to learn and to win has been displayed by this year’s G. A. A. members. Although not all games were won, our hopes were high and our doubts were few. The fall saw the girls concentrating on volley ball and field hockey: while the winter brought basketball: and spring has given us softball, tennis, and archery. Mrs. Johnson and many of her girls are the unsung heroines of those ' all-important big little games” of the season, so here’s a Cheer and a Salute to all of them. — 66 — THE LAMP 1961 Latin Club PRESIDENT: iMike Lumbra Vice-President: Edna Achilles SECRETARY: Paul Villeneuve This year the Latin Club has spent much of the year studying Roman life. Remarkable reports have been given on such topics as slave conditions, Roman architecture, and lives of important men. After having seen Ben-Hur,” new aspects of Roman Civilization were discussed. Latin puzzles and stories have also been a part of the club’s activities. Students especially interested in Latin have a common bond in the Laitn Club. The size of the club makes it one which is informal and affords more active participation by each member. — 67 — THE LAMP 1961 Photography Club President—Stephen Wbeelock Secretary-Treasurer—Daryl Hance New! New! New! Membership cards were introduced this year for everyone joining the Photography Club. These cards entitled their owners to a 10 per cent discount on all picture-taking supplies at Jenks. Before becoming a member eligible for a card, there was one impediment to jump—everyone was obliged to write an essay on the development of photography. On the arrvial of each new event during the school year, the clicking of cameras could be heard as the Club captured the excitement on film. Thaddeus was a faithful viewer of the sale of these pictures, as the Club endeavored to enhance the scrapbooks of the students with school memories. — 68 — THE LAMP 196 1 French Club President—Jeff Fleuren Vice-President—Ben Kelton SECRETARY—Bonnie Burlingame Treasurer—Linda Handy Among the Academy’s newly organized clubs is the French Club. The lure of France seems to have captured quite a number of members for the club. The main objective of the French Club has been to gain a better understanding of France's traditions and language. To promote this aim. French records and lectures have been heard. The club's most important accomplishment has been the publication of a most interesting French newspaper. Throughout the year many French songs have filled the air with music during club periods. — 69 — THE LAMP 1961 The Math Club The Math Club was newly formed this year. Its purpose is to study areas of mathematics which would not otherwise be covered by regular courses. Members have given interesting and informative talks, especially about sets. As a part of the program for next year, the Math Club plans to include speakers and movies on various phases of mathematics. — 70 — THE LAMP 1961 Winter Carnival Committee Eager to make this year’s Winter Carnival a smash, the Winter Carnival Committee, under the guidance of Mr. Ryan, was most successful. The opening events were skating and skiing, followed by the sculptures; the theme chosen being Komic Kapers.” The committee worked vigorously, planning a wonderful weekend— crowning Cupid, a day at the Lyndon Outing Club, and a royal evening at the Snow Ball with the crowning of the King and Queen. All in all, it was a great carnival, thanks to the faculty, the committee, and the students. — 71 — THE LAMP 1961 Winter Carnival Court KING—Eugene Dionne ATTENDANTS—Brian Albiser Ted Lewis QUEEN—Linda Calkins ATTENDANTS—Pauline Lillicrap Denise Russo — 72 — THE LAMP 1961 Winter Carnival Informals — 73 — THE LAMP 1961 Winter Cam ival In formats — 74 — THE LAMP 1961 — 75 — THE LAM P 196 1 Winter Carnival In forma Is — 76 — THE LAMP 1961 The Ski Club President: Peter Cole VICE-PRESIDENT: Fred Bierlmaier Secretary-Treasurer: Sandra Burrington With seventy-five members, the Ski Club was a huge success this year. The Ski Club would like to thank their faculty advisor. Mr. Racenet, for his time and effort in behalf of the club. — 77 — THE LAMP 1961 Glee Club What a big hit this group has made this year—especially the male section! The small, sixty-member group obtained quality unsurpassed by former years under the wonderful direction of Mr. Norman Green. One of the additional attractions this year was the broadcast of the Glee Club's Christmas Concert, taped on December 14 and played on December 18, ever WTWN. On December 19 the Glee Club, along with the Orchestra, presented to fellow students the joint Christmas Concert, which was enjoyed by everyone. In the evening the Glee Club again gave a splendid performance to an interested public. An unforgettable trip was taken to Plattsburg for a concert there on April 29. Then on April 28 the Spring Concert was held at Fuller Hall. In May the All-State Music Festival delegates to Burington were elected. The lucky eight were Kathy Butterfield. Kay Cooley, Jimmy Kennedy, Gordon Lougee, Terry MacPherson, Linda Rowe. Rossanna Vigneault, and Chris Walthers. Joining together on June 9, the Band, the Orchestra, and the Glee Club presented a superb Commencement Concert, which made a lasting impression on the class of 1961. We wish to thank Mr. Green: the pianist, Barbara Black, and all the members of the Glee Club for a successful year at St. J. A. PRFSIDENT: Ted Lewis SECRETARY: Daryl Hance — 78 — THE LAMP 1961 Freshman Singers ACCOMPANIST: Ann Swainbank SECRETARY: Brenda Kimball We have an exceptionally talented group of girls making up our Freshman Singers” this year. Under the capable direction of Mr. Norman Green, we can be confident that these young ladies will be a fine asset to our Glee Club and Musical Department during the next three years. — 79 — THE LAMP 1961 Orchestra Another year and another group of talented musicians for the St. Johns-bury Academy Orchestra. Under the able direction of Mr. Messier, these active students strove once again to recover from an attack of By-by Seniors.” As an added attraction to the Christmas Concert, members assembled ”in the pit and presented the student body and friends with favorites of the season. January each year means International Music Festival time. Once again those members who for years have worked toward this goal were selected to travel to Mount Royal. This is indeed a thrilling climax to years of practice! Home from their travels and eager to be at work, these ambitious musicians made preparations for the annual Northfield Concert. Congratulations on a fine presentation! A large sign in Burlington read, ALL STATE MUSIC FESTIVAL. Excitement arose as members waited to be contacted with the news that they were among the chosen few. Congratulations once again! Commencement and the end of another year. One final performance before leaving with recollections of a year to be remembered. 80 — THE LAMP 1961 — 81 — THE LAMP 1961 Band Hi Friends, I'm J. Leo, Jr.! No doubt you’ve seen me with my band-member friends. Yes, I've had a busy, but exciting year following these young musicians about the state and Canada. Would you care to have me review for you? Fine! Down to the football field—Left! Right! Left! Right! Keep those lines straight! Left! Forward! The good “ole football season was with us once again. This is always an exciting time for the band members as well as for the student body, whose memories of tackles and touchdowns linger yet. As usual, the band conducted itself in an exceptionally fine manner. Ohr I almost forgot to mention that scorching day at the annual Shrine Game. My feet are still blistered! Up from the football field and into Fuller Hall for work to commence on the December concert. I was proud to sit in front of the band during that concert, for they did a splendid job. Tension moved over the band as Mr. Messier, its able director, chose the members for the Mount Royal Music Festival. Although I did not travel to Canada, I did hear by way of the grape vine that they did a great job. Next came that memorable trip to Ottawa. What a welcome! What a visit! Seniors, saddened at the thought of taking their last trip, made the most of every free moment. It was a tired but happy group that once again returned to St. Johr.sbury. And finally the Commencement Concert. Then the end of another year! Congratulations friends, from your friend and mascot, J. Leo, Jr.!! — 82 THE LAMP 1961 Color Guard If we were to follow the footsteps of these guardsmen of our band, where would we be led? Almost everywhere the band goes, for they are a unit under the direction of Mr. Messier. This organization has added miiltary dignity to the band for four years-—on the street, at parades and home concerts, and even the far-away trips. These boys do a great job: carrying rifles, and our American. State, and School flags. Yes. that's why our majorettes have that extra sparkle in their eyes and that extra snap to their marching. The long practices and splendid performances earned them five new majorette hats. Already the girls have carried their hats to Montpelier, Ottawa, and the many concerts at home. The band helped the girls pay for their hats by a booming food sale which could have bought five more new hats. Our majorettes turned French when they were dressed in their green wool uniforms and berets for the annual football games. Captain Pauline Lillicrap topped the successful year off by her capable never-tiring leadership. Our senior majorettes are leaving us now. but five new regulars are ready and able to fill their boots. The school is certainly proud of their Corps De Majorettes. — 84 — THE LAMP 1961 Varsity Cheerleaders Rip Rip, Ray Ray, Hip. Hip, Hay Hay, Our cheerleaders, they’re O. K. This year, under the soirited leadership of six cheerleaders. Academy spirit was revived. During the 1960-1961 school season, in Chapel, at football games, and the four basketball games, the girls led the student body in new songs, and revised school cheers. The cheerleaders sponsored a profitable dance to pay for new outfits, which are sure cute. The remaining profit went in to the football whirlpool. Each spring the girls are chosen by faculty members on the basis of spirit, voire, enthusiasm, and appearance. Mrs. Johnson, the cheerleading faculty advisor, has helped the new squad with rules, regulations, and the organization of the student cheering. Thanks, Mrs. Johnson, for your helpful aid. This year the squad was composed of two sophomore girls (for the first time), complemented by two juniors and two seniors. Thanks for a grand job! At both games the girls bubbled over with pep and enthusiasm. Some people just might wonder if they would have had any pep left, had there been any more games. They not only cheered for the boys but also for Mrs. Johnson's first and second basketball teams. Selection was made by faculty and Varsity Cheerleaders—voice, enthusiasm. spirit, and appearance being the determining factors. Girls, keep all these fine characteristics and success will be yours next year!! — 86 — THE LAMP 1961 Varsity Football Captain—Brian Albiser Coach—Mr. Burlingame Asst. Coaches Mr. Ryan Mr. Racenet Mr. Snapp MANAGER—Paul Chouinard The 1960 Green and White Hilltoppers experienced one of their most disappointing seasons. Plagued with injuries, they ended the season with only one win, one tie, and four losses. Perhaps the most thrilling of all was the tic game the team played with BFA, the 1959 State Champions. The annual classic with LI was another disappointment for the Hill-toppers, although the loss was the result of only one touchdown. The final score: LI—6, St. J.—0. The team deserves a great deal of credit for the effort they gave, and maybe next year with just a little extra push . . . who knows?? The best of luck to next year’s captain and his team. — 87 — THE LAMP 1961 Starting Lineup JV Football Go Green: Go White! seemed to be the word for the J. V. football squad this year. They dashed through their opponents’ line with great gusto. Spirit and determination set this team on fire. These boys deserve plaudits for their fine sportsmanship. However, the events of this past summer are but memories as we now enter these hallowed halls for another year of studying, excitement, and those ever-lovin' tests. For many this is our last year, but for many others this is but the beginning of four fabulous, fun-filled years. We welcomed four new teachers to our staff and heartily re-welcomed Mr. Stowe, a friend of long standing. The big event of the month, as usual, was the initiation by the seniors of the freshman class. Yes, that long-awaited date had finally arrived. Those “little” freshmen took the fun and gags in their stride and made the week a complete success. Friday night concluded the week's events with the Freshman Frolic. At this time, the chosen members of the Freshmen class entertained the Seniors and underclassmen with their balloon busting and egg breaking. Fall, and the start of school, also meant the starting of the football season. It was a rough haul, due to the fact that the previous graduating class removed from the team a number of valuable players. Nevertheless, each team member “pitched in and the football season was in full swing. Miss Hansen of Norway concluded a fine month of school activities with slides of her native country. Yes. it certainly was an exciting month that began this school year. OCTOBER Dear Diary, Well, the trees are bare, the thermometer has dropped about twenty degrees, moth balls have been shaken from winter coats, and now everything and everybody is awaiting that first snowfall. October, as you know, is football month. All the dormant spirit and valor is put into action. B. F. A. was our first gallant victory of the month!! We tied them, but a victory it was, because we were the first team to tie them in three years. Nice going boys!!! I wish I could brag about the next two games, but . . . My philosophy is that the boys used up all their spirit on B. F. A. and had none left for Burlington, Montpelier, or Rice! You've guessed it. We lost those games. — 91 There is a different story to be told, however, about the boys with the wings on their heelr. One victory after another was their course. Bob Peters set a new record for our cross-country course, and Bill Jack-son led the Hilltoppers on to victory many a time. I could write a book about the small but interesting things of the month, but there is that question of time again. So I’ll sign up and out and will be looking high and low for things to tell you about next month. NOVEMBER Dear Diary. Gosh, has this been a busy month! To begin with, we had the student presidential election and election for state officers. We also voted to have, or not to have parimutuel betting in the state. After much campaigning, a straight Republican ticket was voted for the school as a whole. Also that day in Chapel, we had a rousing pep rally for the approaching L. I. game. The finale was the hanging of a dummy representing Lyndon Institute. That very night we had a pep rally that was one of the best ever! As usual, the band played and we marched through the streets and came back to school to a blazing bonfire. When the casket representing “Bury L. I.” was tossed into the flames to sizzle, everyone went wild! It encouraged enthusiasm only to be deflated, after the annual grid tourney the following day, by a score of 6-0. On the same day. November 5, our cross-country team went to Burlington for the state meet and did a great job by taking third place. The next week contained only four school days because of Veterans Day recess. Through biting cold, our band and majorettes marched for the yearly parade. They represented our school well, as usual. Do you remember that following weekend and the Beatnik Dance at Brant-view? I'm sure everyone had a frolicing time. Our long-awaited Thanksgiving recess climaxed a month to be remembered! See you next month. Diary. Until then, be good!! DECEMBER The end of my Thanksgiving vacation came all too soon, but back to school I must THE LAMP 1961 go. The first afternoon back, I got my report card, and what a report!! The band presented its annual concert on December fifth. The members are to be congratulated for their fine efforts, as the concert was enjoyed greatly by everyone. It was disheartening news when we heard that we could not have a basketball team this year. Our disappointment was somewhat releived, however, with the intramural program which was initiated. Maybe next year we can have a team. On December sixteenth, the annual Brantview formal was held. Owing to the never-failing ingenuity of the Brantview girls, the theme of Fantasy in Blue was beautifully portrayed, and the dance was a complete success. The Orchestra and Glee Club presented their Christmas concert on December 20, and it was enjoyed tremendously by the student body. Well, Diary, my Christmas vacation is finally here, and just think, no homework!!! I guess I'd better be good just a few more days, just so Santa won't forget me, and I’ll see you next year!! JANUARY Dear Diary, The air was filled with excitement, breathlessness, and gaiety this month. 1 he year surely started out fine ushering in the Winter Carnival and other festivities. The snow sculptures were well done considering the weather conditions and the time element. The theme of our Winter Carnival this year was Comic Capers. The Juniors won: their sculpture portrayed Yogi Bear. Seniors came in second with Rocky the Flying Squirrel: Sophomores third, with Huckleberry Hound: and the Freshmen fourth, with Snoopy on his Doghouse. Fred Bierlmaier and Jane Ransom were the Ski Meisters this year. Both are Juniors and surely displayed their fine talents during the Carnival. The Juniors won the over-all carnival. The Sophomores came in second, Seniors third, and Freshmen last. After the Sporting Events, came the Snow Ball. The auditorium was filled with mysterious, happy, and laughing faces. The decorations included Pluto. Snow White. Peanuts, Popeye, and Huckleberry Hound. All these attractions were highlighted by the dreamy, mystical organ music. Needless to say, everyone had a swell time. FEBRUARY Dear Diary, With the month rolling by so quickly, I can hardly wait to tell you about EVERYTHING! WE WON!! Yup, we won both games. Trade was a cinch but, boy. Lyndon was nothing but competition. In that game we made up for our losing football game. I learned one thing at both games: Time goes slower when the other team has the ball but speeds right by when our boys have it! You might think basketball monopolized everyone’s time, but two days were spared for the joint concert with Montpelier. First we visited (the big city) and the very next day they came to see us. Two concerts in one week-end is enough to make anyone hibernate for the rest of the winter, but there isn't time to!!! I'm using the rest of this month to get ready for next month. I've been so excited and I've written so fast that my pencil is starting to melt, so I'll sign off while I can still make this darn thing work. MARCH Dear Diary, Our spring vacation falls in April this year and most of the students certainly deserve it after the busy schedules that March brought. First came the Talent Show on March 10. This year's talent was exceptional. The Junior class won. but the Sophomores and Seniors were close in the competition. On March 17. the Sadie Hawkins Dance at Brantview took place. I guess that the girls really enjoyed that dance, inviting their favorite boy: even mock weddings” were featured. That's the way, girls!! The Dramatic Club put on three plays, competing to see which would win. The plays were. The More Perfect Union, Patterns, and Footfalls. They all were well performed by the students, but Footfalls was the winning play. On March 24, the actors and actresses of Footfalls went to Lyndonville to compete in the District One-Act Play Contest. The Academy won. and Tito Camacho was named best actor. We surely are proud of you, Tito! — 92 THE LAMP 1961 This same night (March 24) was the Sophomore Hop date. This year it portrayed the Roaring Twenties. Costumes appropriate to the period were worn, and prizes were given to the most original. Di-antha Peters and Anne Swainbank were the winners. This month we started a Student-of-the-Month Award. This is based on integrity, personality, leadership, and ability to do good for the school. Denise Russo was the Student of the Month for March, and I am sure we all agree that she is worthy of it. I’ll sign off for now, and everyone have a nice vacation next month. APRIL Here we are in the month of April: You can tell once again spring is upon us without looking out the window. Our famed old halls are once again ringing from their rafters with the sounds of our Class Songs. Nice going. Sophomores! It was really wonderful! The atmosphere is at that point again—. Bus and train schedules are being checked for about the 19th time—. Spring Vacation is here. The excitement of our spring sports is here, too. Our first baseball game has come, but a little more practice will make up for our last little mistake. You know. “Practice makes perfect!’’ Our Track Team made a wonderful showing as it usually does. We owe much credit to the track team for their excellent performance. In all our hustle and bustle and “Spring Fever, we mustn’t forget our Honor students. Good luck in the future to the lucky seventeen who made it. The band made more than a “little music” on their trip to Ottawa. Congratulations on the wonderful concert. The month of April is drawing to an end: and I. along with everyone else, have that fever. Summer vacation is drawing near. MAY That long-awaited last six-weeks’ period of school has arrived, and everyone is looking forward to all the fun of the sum mer months ahead. The Seniors are especially excited and are already rehearsing for that final walk down the aisle of Fuller Hall, which will complete their high school years at St. J. A. They are attempting to cram in as many school activities as possible to build up memories for later years. On May 1. St. J. A. and area Seniors spent two enjoyable hours visiting the County Courthouse for the Mock Trial acted out every year for their benefit. It was a most interesting trip, and the underclassmen have much to anticipate. During the regular home room period on Thursday, May 4, the underclassmen nominated candidates for Chairman. Secretary. and Student Council Representative for the following year. From these candidates the officers were chosen in an election on May 1 1. May 4. 5, and 6 were three fabulous days for the All-State Music Festival members. The journey to Burlington was quite an experience for those who went for the first time and a renewal of old friendships for those who had gone previously. A hum of excitement was heard all day. May 12, in anticipation of the evening events of the I 3th, the night of the Junior Prom. It was held at the Frank Adams School. Its mystic theme was “Moonlight Mist.” Thank you. Juniors, for the Prom that will be long remembered by those who attended. The campaign for Student Council President started off with a big bang” on May 15. All week there was a large display of posters out to encourage votes for the two candidates, Curt Utton and Arthur McKee. On May 1 8 the candidates had a chance to speak for themselves in Chapel period, and on May 19 the elections were held to see which one would hold the office for the following year. The monitors were also elected at this time. The baseball and track teams had a full schedule with five home and five away games for the track team and seven home and six away games for the baseball team. Coach Frey and Coach Burlingame, you have done a wonderful job in training our St. J. A. boys. The Dramatic Club performed splendidly in their three-act production. “The Rope.” An appreciative audience beheld the lesults of their hard practice on May 25 and 27. Many thanks to them and to their instructor. Mr. Snapp. Well. Diary, th3t’s all for this month. June will be really busy with graduation coming. — 93 — THE LAMP 1961 JUNE Not only is June Busting Out All Over but also the many students at the St. Johnsburv Academy. Excited that another summer has arrived with swimming, water skiing, boating, tennis, golf, baseball, archery, and camping, these educated young minds turn from slide rules, maps, and Latin books to the work and amusement of the outside world.” Behind them are nine months filled with memories never to be forgotten.” Naturally, all memories aren't pleasant ones. I'm speaking, of course, of the last few days and those everlovin' finals. Oh. to be a senior and have brains!'! Perhaps some year . . . This has been a short month, but for the seniors it has been exciting and rewarding. Decked in green caps and gowns and stepping to the strains of that ole faithful march, they made their final appearance before the student body, faculty, and friends they had come to know and admire. Many were happy at the thought of completing twelve long years of endless work, while others looked forward with anticipation to four more years of the same. Time is fleeting and I must get to press. Until next fall: so long, seniors: take care, underclassmen: enjoy a restful summer, teachers: and to you, Mr. Pierce, our very best in the years that follow. — 94 — THE LAMP 1961 Compliments ROY SHERBURNE D.
