Now. for the last time I can command your attention. If I were to summarize for you what the school has been trying to inculcate, I would say: First—to your own self be true Second—know yourself Third—always be loyal to your family, your church, your community and to your school. I also urge that you become, and remain, an active and loyal alumnus. This school continues only because of the loyalty of those who have attended Saint Johnsbury Academy since 1842. Join this great army in loyalty and support. Sincerely, ELWIN H. When Winter Carnival time arrived, it found us ready and able—our sculpture Pluto won third place. We tied for girls' skimeister, and won the boys’ skimeister—Our class came in fourth in the Carnival, but it was a lot of fun. Oh yes, and we can’t forget the Freshman Sing. The Freshmen blossomed through to take first place. We surprised everyone, even ourselves. 1957- 1958 The Winter Carnival found our class in an early lead. We captured the boys’ skimeister again this year: and we won the boys' cross-country, and beat the Seniors in hockey. Our sculpture Humpty Dumpty” came in second. Our class was ready and waiting for the Freshman Sing,” and again we won the high spot on the program. 1958- 1959 In the March of Dimes money-raising contest we came in second only to the Seniors: they beat us by $7.98. Again we took an early lead in the Winter Carnival. The boys’ skimeister was awarded to our class. The class of '60 had Samuel D. Champlain” for their sculpture—We won the Carnival, and chaos reigned over the hall. Nine of our classmates went to Girls ’and Boys' State. Six boys and three girls were given the honor. We decorated for the Senior Ball, and let me tell you we worked. The theme was A South Sea Island. Oh! I forgot to tell you about the Freshman Sing—our class sang away” with the honors, and we were all thrilled about it. Loren Phelps was elected President of the Student Council, for next year. 1959- 1960 Our first job as Seniors was to initiate the Freshmen—that was a riot. Many of our fellow students were honored for their outstanding work in the Merit Scholarship Tests and the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Five of our classmates were on the first All-Northern Conference; others were on the second team and received honorable mention. This year when the Carnival rolled around, we went in full steam ahead. We took an early lead with Cross-Country and skating. Our sculpture Olympic Bob Sled Team” took first place. When all the votes were counted, we lost by nine points. We take our hats off to the Sophomores: they really deserved to win after the hard work. I might add here that a boy from our class was skimeister again this year—Our classmates have held the boys’ skimeister title every year we have been at the Academy. The Freshman Sing was early this year, and all the classes started preparations weeks in advance. We came through to win again this year, which gives us a perfect record for the four years at St. J. A. School is fast coming to a close now. It seems that graduation is here. The four years have gone by quickly, and now it's time for the Class of '60 to start making its mark in a larger world. “And no matter where we go Tho’ we wander to and fro We’ll be coming back, you know To St. J. The times, dates, and events were all planned by the committee with careful judgment. Ross Bimson. William Knight LIBRARIANS: Kitty Brown, Gloria Hardy. Elizabeth Remick Once again the Academy band and Mr. J. Leo Messier had a busy and eventful year. The band stepped out for their first appearance in August at the annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl Game. The musicians and majorettes put on their usual fine performance. After losing many fine musicians by graduation, the band did a wonderful job of reorganizing, putting pep and spirit into the Academy rooters at rallies and football games. Decked out in their green and white uniforms, the band put on some enjoyable half-time exhibitions. This year the tradition of dividing the band into Green and White bands was revived. For several weeks the White Band, under the leadership of Charlie Boisvert, worked out their routines and made every effort to be the winner. Before the half of the L. I. Game the bands went through their routines. with the Green being judged the best. With football season over the band students settled down to serious work on their December concert. This concert was a great success and was enjoyed by all. January saw a number of the band members travelling to Canada for the Mount Royal Music Festival. A real buzz went around the band when it was announced that on March 11 our friends from Ottawa would be making the long trip to Vermont. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely while the Ottawa group was here. The concert was judged one of the best ever. As the end of the year drew closer, every week end was a busy one for J. Leo Messier and the crew. The band set to work preparing for an exchange trip with Plattsburg, New York. Besides that, there seemed to be a parade nearly every week end. While all of this was going on. some of our own band students were preparing for the All-State Music Festival. All in all, the band put in an eventful year. — 85 — THE LAMP 1960 C. Walthcr, C. Utton. Majorettes The band is now being led by fifteen high-stepping young ladies. Seven new majorettes have joined the ranks. To start off the year, the majorettes marched at all the pep rallies. After all if the majorettes didn't march, there would be no glamour in a pep rally. Isn't that right, girls! The majorettes made a new appearance this year: and boy. did they ever look smart! A white beret and a green kilt and jacket would make any majorette shine from head to toe. The new uniforms couldn't have materialized if it had not been for the splendid help of the band. Yes. the batons have been kept spinning, for there were many hard rehearsals practicing for the December Concert and again for the Ottawa Concert. The success of the majorettes this year is largely due to the fine leadership of Mary Ann Bain and the wonderful cooperation of every one of the majorettes. Thanks a million, girls! The team won eight meets and lost only one to the powerful U. V. M. Frosh. with Bill Jackson setting the pace. Captain Dan Mahoney, Kent Field, Les Moore, Paul Villeneuve. Mike Lumbra, Bob Hallett, and Brian Player should also be commended on their fine performances throughout the season. A new feature was added to the schedule when the team competed in a postal meet with eighteen other schools from all sections of the United States. Five members of the squad, including this year's captain, DanMahoney, Bill Jackson, Kent Field. Les Moore, and Paul Villeneuve represented St. J. A. and the state of Vermont in the New England Cross Country Championships. As usual, these boys turned in outstanding performances. A. are crowded with students beginning another busy year—the last for many of us. It is good to see the old familiar faces and also the new ones in our midst. We all want to welcome Miss McKay and Mr. Daniels, two new members of the faculty. September presented a busy schedule. Friday night, September 18. we had our first pep rally.” We hope our cheers were partly responsible for the 7-0 victory over Spaulding the following day. The Cross-Country team began a busy schedule by defeating Jericho 16-39 in their first meet. We are really proud of both teams and can only say. Keep up the good work. The week of September 21 saw bewildered Freshmen being put through their paces by the mighty seniors. The cries of air raid” could be heard outside the school, while inside the Frosh were humbly bowing to Thaddeus. I can see October creeping up on me. so will have to close. See you next month. Diary! OCTOBER Dear Diary: Here it is the second month of the school year and things are beginning to buzz. The football team has lost only one game, to BFA. and we sure are proud of them. October 3 opened a new month in the season with a winning game against Windsor High. October 17 followed with another victory against Burlington. Also, on October 24 and 31 the team proved again victorious against Montpelier and Rice Memorial. The Cross Country Team, as well as the football team, has been a delight to our school this month. On October 2 and 17 they competed with Burlington: on October 9 and 20 with Williamstown: and on October 26 with Waterbury. They were victorious in all five meets in which they participated, and they deserve our highest praise. October 18 brought to our school a goodly number of parents and students from surrounding schools to attend College Day. Well Diary, the month of October is nearly over, but we’ll soon be back to relate the happenings in November. See you then! NOVEMBER Dear Diary: November has rolled around again and with it another month filled with school activities. To begin with, the long awaited L. I. game finally arrived. This game would decide whether or not our football season had been a successful one. Our boys did a wonderful job and proved that under pressure they are really tops. Of course everyone remembers the score—Academy 13, L. 1. 7. The Battle of the Bands” preceded the L. I. game. Our regular band was divided into two groups. Although the Green Band won, both did an excellent job. On the same day as the L. I. game. November 7, the Cross Country team went to Burlington to compete for the Vermont State crown. However.
