September 25 the Council sponsored its annual Magazine Drive in order to earn money for the Activity Fund, and in January the Council earned a large sum of money for the March of Dimes. On the entertainment calendar, the Council sponsored a Hallowe'en Party and Freshman Initiation. This year the Council tried something new by having an exchange program. Five of our Council members went to North Easton, Massachusetts, to compare their school system with ours. The last week in April, five of their Council members came to St. Johnsbury Academy for the same reason. Adding the usual job of chartering clubs, etc., the Council feels that this year has proved the value of the organization for the well being of the Academy. — 61 — THE LAMP 1959 L to R 1st row—P. This student is a member of the Monitors’ Club. The duty of a Monitor is to enforce the rules and regulations of the school and to see that the student body adheres to them. A student wishing to become a Monitor presents a petition with fifteen signatures to the headmaster. It then goes to the Student Council, where twenty-four petitions are chosen to be voted upon by the student body. Twelve members are chosen. This year, after voting for second semester monitors, it was decided to have two alternates. Ann Maclver and Florence Steele were elected. — 62 — THE LAMP 1959 L to R lsf rotr—L. Morgan. E. Goldberg. The Debating Club took part in the annual meet at Dartmouth College. Though the club did not place in the meet, Virginia Hinett took third place in the speakers' awards. The Club has sponsored several fund-raising projects. During March they presented a program for the Men's Club of the North, South, and Congregational Churches. Curse You, Jack Dalton.” In the tradition of such dramas, it looked as if the villains were going to get the best of the damsel in distress. However, the hero came to her rescue and was appropriately rewarded with a kiss as the curtain fell! A refreshing change from recent years, the play was enjoyed by all. In March the club began rehearsing for the three-act mystery farce, Mumbo Jumbo, given on April 9 and 10. The play is concerned with two college boys who need money and decide to turn their uncle's farm into a hotel. The plot is humorously woven around the doings and misdoings of their guests. Freshman Singers Freshman Singers, a group of about twenty-four girls, meet every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon after school. The group, led by Mr. Norman Green, diligently practices its songs in order to make each performance an enjoyable one. Its activities started this year with a joint concert with Lyndon Institute here in Fuller Hall. Two nights later it accompanied the Glee Club to Lyndon Institute for a return concert. The Freshman Singers were scheduled to appear in December, but because of lack of practice were unable to do so. On April 27, they sang two songs in Chapel for the benefit of the students. The Annual Commencement Concert marked their final appearance for the year, but next year when the girls join the Glee Club they will start another year of singing fun! — 76 — THE LAMP 1959 Glee Club Vice-President Loren Phelps Secretary-Treasurer Carlenc Wright The Glee Club, under the direction of iMr. Norman Green, enjoyed a very successful year. Dance Band This year a new club submitted a charter to the Student Council. The official name is the St. Johnsbury Academy Danceband. Its chief purpose is to play for school functions and worthy causes. This year, Danceband played during a chapel program before delighted students. They also made an appearance at a benefit basketball game and at an informal school dance. Later engagements were performing in Ottawa during the band trip, and playing at a fashion show for the benefit of the new gym. This club will become a tremendous asset to the school as the danceband acquires new music and its popularity becomes more wide-spread. Though slightly hindered by the graduation of last year's seniors, the band rallied and “shot off the fire works” at all pep rallies and football games, even the L. By late November, games and rallies were over, and again, the band set its students to work on their one and only home concert of the year to be held in December. This was a big success and the band received much praise. With the concert over, members looked forward with anticipation to their trip to Ottawa, Canada. This April band trip was one to be remembered for some time by the members chosen to attend. Back home again the band members, after one week of rest, were at it again; this time preparing for their return trip to New York City which was coming up in May. They lost the remaining four games: two to Montpelier, and two to Lyndonville. Their coach and co-captains, however, have done a fine job. All thirty-three boys are to be complimented on their good sportsmanship and school spirit. We know that by the time these boys are playing varsity football they will be outstanding. — 89 — THE LAMP 1959 Varsity Basketball The Varsity Basketball team, captained by Hank Bonang, had a rather disappointing season. Cross Country Team Coach Raymond Frey never thought when the season started they would be taking a 7-1 record besides capturing the Vermont crown. Captain Bill Grady led his teammates to this outstanding record, breaking his own time to 14 minutes, 16 seconds. More credit also goes to the rest of the Hilltopper squad, which consists of Billy Jackson, Dan Mahoney. Les Moore. Kent Field, Bob Odrobina, Darab Batmanglidj, and Paul Villeneuve for their outstanding performances. A.—unfortunately it is the last year for some of us. Most of the faculty faces are familiar, but I would like to introduce Miss Fuld, Mrs. Prin-dle, Mrs. Cargill, Mrs. Mar-ceille. and Mr. Snapp. Classes began for another year following Labor Day with confused Freshmen rushing here and there and feeling altogether ■'lost. Our football team had one game scheduled for September. We met Spaulding at home on the 20th but lost. 27-7. Fleads up. this was only the first game! The 27th we had an open date giving the team a well-deserved rest. Our cross-country team got off to a better start. We met Jericho away, and won 15-40. Keep it up boys, you're doing Lne! As usual Freshman week came in with a bang. It was not unfamiliar to see the poor Freshmen bowing before Thad-dcus, obeying the two most-hated words Air Raid. and welcoming the All Clear. I guess time is up for September as October is just around the corner, so for this month I bid you farewell. See you next month! OCTOBER Dear Diary: October has certainly been a busy and exciting month. On October 9 the Debating Club was host to the Forensic League. Mr. Plummer and the Debating Club did a wonderful job in planning this successful conference. During the week of October 13 Bernard Gornbein. traveling science teacher from Oak Ridge Institute, visited the Academy. His interesting classes and chapel ry: program greatly increased our scientific knowledge. This year the Academy again held College Day for the area schools. This day was crammed into a busy week. Diary, this has surely been a busy month for sports’ events. October 24 the Academy tied Windsor 25-25 in a hard-fought battle. During the half time the cross-country team defeated Rochester 18-37. October 7 saw the cross-country team suffer their only loss of the season to Burlington. 29-26. Friday, October 10. was another busy day. Bill Grady set a record as the cross-country team defeated Williamston 20-30. My. are we proud of these boys! That same night, the football team lost to Bellows Free Academy, 20-6 in a game under the lights. The cross-country team finished off a busy month by winning the rest of their meets: Jericho 16-39. Waterbury 15-40. Burlington 17-38. and Williamston 22-33. We were all so proud as our football team defeated Burlington 17-38. October 18. October 25 brought the L. I.-St. J. A. football game. We were surely disappointed when the team was defeated 36-6. but we arc looking forward to seeing the boys win the rest of their games. November is almost here, so I must run. See you next month. Diary! NOVEMBER Dear Diary: This has been a pretty exciting month. Diary. We started the first of the month with a bang. The football team traveled to Burlington for a game against Cathedral. It sure was a big disappointment when they upset us 12-7. What really hurt was that it ended a 12-game-losing streak on behalf of Cathedral. Oh well, maybe next game we’ll settle right down to business. The same day the Academy was honored when our Cross Country Team walked away (or should I say ran away) as the winner of the Vermont Cross Country Title. We certainly were proud of the team, especially since five of our boys placed as the first 20 winners. The next week end the Cross Country Team traveled to Providence. R. I., where they participated in the New England Interscholastic Cross Country Championship. Once again the Academy was honored when Captain Bill Grady placed fourth, establishing at the same time a record by finishing lower than any other Vermont harrier in the history of the event. The team finished 13th. They certainly have had one terrific season. Nice going, fellows! And saving the best until last—our football team broke the Montpelier Jinx on us with a convincing 34-12 victory on November 8. This was their first win over Montpelier since 1952. What a great game! Wouldn’t have missed it for anything! The boys really played as a team and each and every one deserved credit. Our band, majorettes, and color guards once again participated in the annual Veterans’ Day Parade. They certainly deserve a lot of credit for a fine performance, and on such a cold day, too. — 95 — THE LAMP 1959 Compliments ROY SHERBURNE D. O. 65 Railroad St. St. Johnsbury, Vt. E. T. H. K. Losing seven games right in a row isn’t mere coincidence. The boys seem to start off ok but by the third quarter—they've had it! What a gloomy start to basketball season. Let’s hope next month presents a better record. Now let’s look at the brighter side of things. On December 8 the Band put on a concert to help finance their trip to Ottawa. Ontario. The Glee Club has also been keeping busy. December 2 they performed for the St. J. Woman's Club at the South Church. And on the ninth they entertained the members of the United Workers of the North Church and of the Grace Methodist Church. The Dorm students had a very colorful formal on the twelfth. The girls decorated Brantview in the theme of a Christmas Dream. Mrs. Pierce, Jr., was the center of attraction part of the evening. She sang a couple of numbers, one being “Black Magic. There were few social activities in January, but the basketball team kept to a busy schedule. The month was started on the fifth with a game played with Essex, which we lost 75-39. On January ninth the Academy chalked up their first win of the season 59-42 over Lyndon Teachers College Jayvees. January 13 we outclassed Derby 67-47, and on the 19rh we again rallied to defeat Cathedral 45-43. January 30 we were defeated by Derby 56-60. Being a very busy week, our team also had | games with Morrisville and Lyndon. Then winter carnival time was here again, the I 2th, 1 3th. 14th. The glorious activities opened in Chapel Thursday when our Queen. Diane Russo, and King Dick Smith, officially opened the carnival. Attendants to royalty were Mary Kay Hart. Ann Maclver. John Fyfe, and Hank Bonang. Thursday afternoon everyone watched cross country, hockey, and skating, and worked on the sculptures. At night the faculty entertained us with a comedy play and a fashion show. Friday the ski-enthusiasts flocked to Lyndon Outing Club. In the evening the tired but happy students attended the Cupid Dance, where George Sheldon was crowned Cupid of 1959 by the Queen. March was a busy month all around—The Student Council sent five of its members on an exchange trip. These pupils went to North Easton, Massachusetts. They participated in the school events down there for a week, and they came back all excited and telling everyone what a wonderful time they had. From what they said— we got the impression that the kids down there were really great. Oh yes—and Diary. I can't forget to tell you about the Freshman Sing. All the classes tried their best, but somehow the class of '60 walked off the stage with the honors again. This makes the third year in a row for them. All the dancers appeared happy, even though they were surrounded by decorations of April showers. Spring is here once again and the baseball team has now begun its series of practices. Another spring sport beginning action is track and we hope that both teams have a successful sea- son. From April 16 to the 18th the band will enjoy their annual trip to Ottawa.
