The fun that we had and friends we knew; The teachers, books, and homework too: The games we played or want to see: Remain but now a memory. Chorus When out on the road of life we peer, And stumble on from year to year. Whether near or far we roam, Our thoughts will ever wander home, Back home to St. J. A. Words and music by: Mariam Blackwell and Rodney McFarlin CLASS POEM Now each hand clasps its reward. Each eye looks down upon it; yet sees through into a dream An individual dream of the yesterdays, of happiness, Perhaps hearing the lusty cheers of a pep rally in the crisp fall air, Or recalling a frantic night before exams. Re-living the thrill of being upper classmen. And laughing on the benches in the noon time sun. Suddenly, today, all this seems to have slipped through our fingers Leaving only the diploma, we now hold in our hands. The first chord of the traditional march sends its icy fingers Into the very depths of our hearts. With this strange aching, we start up the aisle for the last time. Ahead lies the open door........ Beyond it we see sunshine and the world. We lift up our heads and smile. Marilyn Rae Skinner THE LAMP 1947-48: 1948-49: 1949-50: 1950-51: FRANCES ANN AIKEN 18 Main Street St. Johnsbury, Vt. In the opening game of the season, the Hilltoppers found themselves deadlocked in a 13-13 game with the Bellows Free Academy eleven of St. Albans. With but three and one half minutes of game time remaining, Dave Caplan scored the tying touchdown. Next on the Hilltoppers schedule came the Solons from Montpelier High School. Sparked by Gero and Caplan, the St. Johnsbury gridsters fought their way to an 18-0 victory. Again Gero and Caplan took over the reins of a strong and alert Academy team as they overpowered a newly formed eleven hailing from the town of Winooski with a 33-7 score. The first defeat of the season came from one of the strongest gridiron combinations in the state, the Newport Hawks. Again Gero and Caplan turned in a stellar performance but lacked the necessary aid to take Academyites came out on the short end of a 33-18 score. St. Mary's of St. Albans was the next visitor to Hj the Hilltoppers were definitely in top form for the game. With ing three touchdown passes and Caplan and Gero each sc trounced St. Mary's 39-0. On October 28. we finally met our long time rivals, LI Lyndon, boasting one of the best teams in its history, turned Academy team with a 19-0 score. The Hilltoppers had all but-final push to put the pigskin across as they were set up with more than three scoring chances. Thus the St. Johnsbury Academy's ten year supremacy over their opponent from the north was broken. On Armistice Day the Hilltoppers were hosts to the Bishop's Academy team from Canada. This game was played under Canadian football rules. Showing much improvement over the two previous years of competition, the Bishop’s Academy gridsters turned back a strong St. Johnsbury team minus Dave Caplan. one of the king pins of the squad. 1 he score ended 25-16 in favor of Bishop’s. To end the season, the Academy gridsters were guests of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars at a banquet in the South Church. All of the members of the Academy squad were presented with a miniature gold football inscribed St. J. 1950. With only two lettermen from last year’s team. Coach Rand put a fairly adept squad on the court for the season’s opener. Looking impressive and showing promises for a brilliant year, St. Johnsbury overwhelmed a tough Montpelier five, 51-46. This victory accompanied by successive wins over St. Johnsbury Trade, Nortbfield, and Hardwick, constituted a fast start for the Acads. Thus the early season’s record consisted of but one defeat — 42-50 with Newport on the long end. It was smooth sailing until Bradford arrived and beginning with a 45-48 setback, the Hilltoppers suffered an eight game losing streak, bowing to a strong Peoples Academy quintet twice, as was the case with Bradford, and to Water-bury, Newport, Northfield. and Montpelier, once. The Acad’s only moment of victory was an unexpected upset over the Waterbury “Longhorns,” 49-44. Finally recovering, the Green and White spilled St. Michaels, Lyndon, and Trade as the mediocre season (10-10) ended. The Acads were invited to the Kiwanis Tournament and emerged with the championship by impressive wins over Barton 49-43, and Lyndon 57-40. Pellerin, Stratton, and Gilman were honored by being named to the All-Tourney team. Gilman and Vitty played good defensive ball during the season, and gave the opposition plenty of trouble with their control of the backboards. Up front, the Hilltoppers found in Stratton a dependable and driving forward who perpetually worried the opposition as did Hoar with his amazing set-shot accuracy. Pellerin, who joined the Varsity after a brief session with the Junior Varsity, and Dana, shared the pivot chores and did equally as well with the offensive rebounds. 1951 Schedule St. Johnsbury 51 Montpelier 46 St. Johnsbury 64 St. Johnsbury Trade 39 St. Johnsbury 50 Newport 50 St. Johnsbury 42 Northfield 22 St. Johnsbury 44 Lyndon 38 St. Johnsbury 36 Hardwick 19 St. Johnsbury 45 Bradford 48 St. Johnsbury 49 Waterbury 44 St. Johnsbury 32 Peoples Academy 66 St. Johnsbury 36 Newport 63 St. Johnsbury 25 Montpelier 35 St. Johnsbury 37 Northfield 39 St. Johnsbury 47 Peoples Academy 51 St. Johnsbury 33 St. Michaels 40 St. Johnsbury 34 Bradford 43 St. Johnsbury 49 Hardwick 34 St. Johnsbury 31 Waterbury 41 St. Johnsbury 45 St. Michaels 37 St. Johnsbury 66 Lyndon 37 St. Johnsbury 70 Tournament Record St. Johnsbury Trade 55 St. Johnsbury Academy 49 Barton 43 St. Johnsbury Academy 57 Lyndon 40 P A G E S I X T V - T H R E E THE LAMP Track St. Johnsbury Academy opened their track season May 7 with a closely contested battle with the UVM freshmen. Burlington travelled to St. Johnsbury May 1 5 and proceeded to show why they are rated the best team in the state. At the day s end, the visitors had won by 70 - 47. Caplan. St. Johnsbury won 8 out of the 1 5 events, but just did not have the depth. The district meet was held at Lyndonville, and the lads from Burlington again were supreme because of depth. St. Johnsbury and Lyndon were tied for second. People's Academy ran fourth and Newport wound up last. Again the hilltoppers took seven firsts, only to lack the depth. After one game was prematurely rained out, Spaulding then took the measure of the Hilltoppers to the tune of 18-2 at Barre, in which the fielding of the boys from St. Johnsbury fell apart. Recovering from their humiliation, the Academy nine trounced the Trade School for the second time, 14-2. Frechette capturing the win on his first stint at pitching. On Memorial Day, the Academy journeyed to Littleton to break a three-year jinx. To begin with, the membership was practically doubled as a result of the terms of the revised Constitution. Also, for the first time this year, the president was elected by the vote of the entire Student Body. Campaigns and political rallies were held and after the balloting, it was announced that Rodney McFarlin was the winner by a sizeable margin. The officers were installed in an impressive ceremony during a chapel period. The Council formed committees to begin work on a monitor system and the question of school rings. The Council appointed chairmen of the Assembly, Publicity, Social, and Welfare Committees. Before long, a new Article was added to the By-Laws of the Constitution, which provided for a Monitors’ Club. The Council granted charters to the Outing Club, the Science Club, the Girls’ Athletic Association, and the Varsity Club. The Council serves as a central controlling agency for student activity funds: provides a means of participation of students in the democratic management of the school: constantly works to promote the general welfare of the school: and stands ready, willing, and able to offer its help to all student organizations. Twombly The Monitors’ Club is a new organization this year in St. Johnsbury Academy. Under the excellent leadership of Franklin Wheelock, it made an auspicious start. The Monitors’ Club consists of one student chosen from each home room by the members of that room. Frances Aiken was elected secretary and Franklin Wheelock, president. A meeting is held every two weeks in which questions may be asked and duties assigned. Each monitor must wear a badge denoting his authority and unless wearing it, cannot initiate action for an official reprimand, known as ’’giving a warning.” The student regulations are very simple, requesting only general courtesy and behavior. For a first warning a student is obliged to appear before the Student Council and for additional warnings is assigned work around the school. After eight previous warnings he is liable to recommendation to the Headmaster for suspension and for eleven previous warnings is liable to recommendation to the Headmaster for expulsion. Any monitor who fails to carry out his duty may be reported to the Student Council or to another monitor. When a teacher is in charge of a group, a monitor cannot give a warning except in Study Hall. It is to be hoped that this organization will grow in stature and respect throughout the years, as it has been founded to perpetuate the high principles of St. Johnsbury Academy. A large cast headed by Sandy French and Pat Vigneault turned in a very creditable performance. For the One-Act Play Contest Mr. John selected 'Will O’ The Wisp,” a fantasy set in Land’s End. England. This play won the District Contest and went on to win laurels in the State competition, finishing in first place with the Putney School. Members of the cast were Joan White, Marian Handy. Pat Vigneault, and Sandy Murphy. On April 27-28 the cast, Mr. John, and Miss Lanphere, accompanied by Mr. Bixby and several members of the Dramatic Club, journeyed to Providence, Rhode Island, where they took part in the New England Drama Festival. This was the second consecutive year that St. Johnsbury Academy's entry had won the State Festival, and had performed at the New England Festival. After successfully being the host to the state finals in the One-Act Play Contest this year, the Academy has been chosen as the host school to the New England Drama Festival the last week-end in April, 1952. Because of this we have had one of the largest and most successful Outing Clubs in recent years. The main event sponsored by the Outing Club this year was the annual Winter Carnival held on February 22, 23. and 24. In spite of the poor cooperation of Old Man Winter, who failed to supply us with enough snow or cold weather, the enthusiastic students produced some of the best snow sculptures in years. It was a busy week-end. On the evening of the 22nd. a hilarious basketball game between the Girls’ Varsity team and the Boys' Varsity was plaved. On Friday night, a movie. Sitting Pretty, was shown, followed by a dance in the gymnasium. The height of the Carnival was the Snow Ball. Selected to reign over the festivities in Fuller Hall Dining Room were Queen Barbara Moore and King Rodney McFarlin. I he high point of their reign came when King Rodney announced that the Class of 1952 had won the gold cup for the best Snow Sculpture. I he Coronation and presentation of awards were broadcast over WTWN. The semi-professional ski enthusiasts enjoyed their trip to Mt. Mansfield on Saturday. All in all, despite the fact that the weather prevented skating events, the Winter Carnival of 1951 was a rousing success. P A G E S E V E NTY-S E V E N Seated—W. Costa. A. Lcclcrc. Sears. Belanger. While business meetings have been held each week, they have been shortened as much as possible and the group has adjourned to the laboratory: the main purpose of the organization of the club being to provide a chance for experimentation and research not possible during the regular class periods. The club was granted full use of the laboratory and this privilege has been exercised to the advantage of all. Some of the General Science students made simple electric motors while some of the Physics students worked on radios and electric eye apparatus. On Saturday morning, November 11, the long-awaited-for band uniforms arrived just in time for the Armistice Day parade. This was the colorful and pleasing result of concerts and many generous donations from individuals, clubs and businesses in the St. Johnsbury area. The first concert of the year was the joint benefit concert presented by the St. Johnsbury Band and the Academy Band, directed by Mr. Raymond Laughlin and Mr. J. Leo Messier. This year for the first time, the Academy Glee Club and Band joined with the Keene, N. H. High School Glee Club presenting an outstanding concert on April 27 in St. Johnsbury. Students of the musical organizations entertained the Keene Chorus members in their homes. On the 10th. 11th. and 12th of May the State Music Festival was held in Burlington for its 24th year. The all-state members attended the festival on all three days, the all-state band presenting their concert on Friday night. The all-state band members represented from the Academy were Frances Aiken. Lorraine Benedict. Wendall Boardman, Frances Burdette. Elaine Corbett, Carol Drew, Sanford French, Joann Johnson, William Naatz, Mary Simons, and Floyd Wheeler. Saturday morning our band competed with other bands throughout the state in individual concerts. In the afternoon our band entered the parade of 35 bands, marched by the reviewing stand, and were judged by Governor Emerson and other prominent men of the state. Other associations and activities that the band played for during the year included the Boy Scouts, the Teachers’ Convention, the district and state finals of the One Act Play Contest. Parents' Night, Memorial Day. the grade school's Halloween parade, Wednesday afternoon broadcasts, and chapel exercises.
