SEASON SUMMARY KNOCKOUTS The women's basketball champion. Knockouts. cruised through the league with a perfect 8-0 record. The Knockouts' first victory came against Circle K with freshman All-Star Suzanne McNulty scoring 17 points in the 31-15 win. DKD provided stiff competition in the next contest. but the eventual champions prevailed, 42-39, as McNulty again scored 17 points. The Knockouts triumphed, 33-26, over defending champion SCC as McNulty and All-Star fo- ward Beth Buchanan provided 21 points combined. ATU was the next victim of the Knockouts' steamroller, 35-18, as McNulty led all scorers with 23 points. The second half of the season was an instant replay: Circle K. 30-15. DKD, 48-26, SCC, 31-29. and ATU, 28-25, were again topped as the Knockouts warmed up for the champion- ships. With an All-Star starting team, Qalong with McNulty and Buchanan were guard and captain Carol Hynes. forward Elaine Anzalone and center Sue Aielloj, coach Ron Vespa prepared the squad for the Championship Game against Cir- cle K Qwho had beaten DKD to gain the finalsj. Behind the crisp passing and playmaking of Hynes, the Knockouts jumped out to a 17-12 half time lead. ln the second half, the Circle K club closed the gap to three. 28-25. but the Knock- outs' magic returned as the team, behind McNulty's fast breaks and Hynes' layups. rolled off a 13-3 spurt to win the championship, 41-28. CIRCLE K Championship contender Circle K had an impressive record of 5-3 this season with freshman All-Star and league MVP. Crissa Caponi. leading the way. After suffering losses to the Knockouts and DKD Q in overtimej. Circle K bounced back to win five of the next six games. including a stunning 62-44 win over DKD. ln that game, Crissa Caponi scored 51 points fa new record at St. John'sy as both teams scored more points f106j than had previously been scored in a women's intramural basketball game here. ln the playoff against DKD, Circle K sloshed to a 19-16 half time lead with both teams performing at a sub-par level. With 8:01 left in the game, Circle K led comfortably, 31-24, howev- er, DKD roared back taking the lead with less than one minute left, 33-32.
