Organized by Lambda Chi President, Kathleen Carroll, and the other sorority sisters in conjunction with Health Counselor Marie Porzio, R.N., this event was held in the Little Theater. Blood donations were accept- ed by the New Jersey Blood Services, a division of the Greater New York Blood Program. This blood drive has been a yearly project of Lambda Chi since 1956. Donors were given an ad- ded incentive. They were eligible to participate in a raffle of two tickets to the Autumn Ball. Due to the generosity of the 1979 donors, 56 pints of blood were collected. 4 What do you mean blood comes out faster when you're upside down? BLCGD DRI XQZY5' 'il X. Led by co-captains, QB John Vacante and MLB Anthony Dippy Careccia. the team won the league scoring title 1100 pointsl and the league defense title Q6 points given upj. Vacante and Careccia were named the Of- fensive and Defensive Players of the Year. The Animal House steam roller marched through the season unscarred, though one or two potholes did emerge. After blanking DPU 7-0 and abusing the Rebels 32-0, the Big Blue Machine had to go OT to top the feisty Indians, 12-6. After another big win, Q25-0 over the Moonsj, Animal House went scoreless for almost four quarters with the eventual finalist, Sigma Chi, until Vacante. behind a block from All-Star RB Mike Casa- massa, went over from the one. In Position Week, Animal House clinched the regular season crown and a Championship Game berth with a convincing 18-0 victory over DPU. Sigma Chi took the rollercoaster into the playoffs and just missed getting to the top of the hill. After a forfeit win over the Moons and a 13-2 struggle over the Indians, they hit the first dip in the tracks as DPU out-de- fensed them 2-0. A 19-0 win over the Rebels preceded a matchup with Animal House. De- spite four interceptions by league MVP Ken Damstrom, Animal House pulled out a fourth quarter, 6-0 victory. Position week saw Sigma Chi gain the playoffs with a 13-6 win over the Indians. DPU was the obstacle to the champion- ship and for three quarters the rollercoaster was side tracked. A fourth quarter touch- down pass from Damstrom to John LaRosa and the subsequent extra point by Danny Roche on a Damstrom pass gave Sigma Chi a spot in the Championship Game. Delta Psi Llpsilon. in what was termed a rebuilding year by sports coordinator continued December 55 56 Tomahawk Larry Kennedy, nearly rebuilt the entire league as well. A young, enthusiastic team, DPU, featured a No-Name Defense that reg- istered four straight shut-outs. After falling to Animal House 7-0, the de- fense shut the doors, blanking the Moons 20-0, Sigma Chi 2-0 fthe winning points scored as All-Star lineman Gene Struyk caught Ken Damstrom in the end zonej, the lndians 6-0 and the Rebels 15-0. Experience won out in position week as the league champions ambushed youthful DPU 18-0. In the playoff game against Sigma Chi, a screen pass from QB George Falvo to Ralph Giordano went 63 yards for what appeared to be the game's only score. Late in the fourth quarter, though, the veteran Sigma Chi team broke through, and DPU fell, 7-6. For the lndians, 1979 football could be described as frustrating. After squeaking by the Rebels, 7-6, the Indians fell to Sigma Chi, 13-2, and Animal House, 12-6. Another good defensive effort was wasted with a 6-0 loss to DPU. An 18-12 win over the Moons set the stage for Position Week against Sig- ma Chi. With a playoff berth on the line, the defense, led by All-Stars Bill Fitzpatrick and Fran Mangano, held off repeated offensive thrusts. but the effort was just short, 13-6. Both first year teams, the Moons and Reb- els displayed as much enthusiam and co- maraderie as many veteran teams. The Moons, captained by All-Star QB Lou D'Er- milio, captured the season series between the two teams with 12-0 and 18-0 victories. The all-frosh Rebel team, with All-Star DE Sal Cannata, lacked experience and height. but certainly not heart, as any opponent could tell you. Perhaps the best played game of the sea- son, Animal House-Sigma Chi ll had all the marks of a Championship Game. Hard hit- ting and spectacular plays highlighted the scoreless four quarters. An incomplete pass, however, forced the shoot-out style overtime. ln four attempts from the 20, Sig- ma Chi could only gain 7 yards. Vacante, on his third try, found Jim Curran over the mid- dle for the winning score. 3 PM L1 'Q X-XY ,4 Wf A - f 'N - if as ' A ,m U 5 fo, af' M December 57 SEASON SUMMARY The Women's Bowling League was a smashing success this year with 37 participants. Eight teams comprised the league: two teams from Alpha Theta Llpsilon. two from Delta Epsilon Beta. two from the Knockouts, one from Delta Kappa Delta and one team named the Pinheads . The girls bowled at Country Lanes on Sunday after- noons from October to December. The top four teams made the playoffs on the basis of total points. The DEBs' players, Linda Bawiec. Adrienne Buono, Maryellen Eglin- ton. Michele Fiorenza and Sue Lotz, finished ahead of the pack with a record of 19 wins and 5 losses for a total of 46 points. Tough competition was provided all season by ATU Uoanne DiGiovanni, Karen Franzen, Lauri Grasso. Carolyn Harris and Pat O'MaggioJ who finished in second place with 41 points Q18 wins. 6 lossesy. The playoffs. however. were a different story. For the second year in a row, the team that finished in fourth place during the regular season won the playoffs and Championship. In 1978, it was DKD who turned the trick by upsetting the Knockouts in the final round of the playoffs. This year. a team representing ATU QJoan Debany. Diane Georger. Karen Messo. Diana Russo and Debbie Vendittoj took the Championship by defeating the Knockouts QBeth Buchanan, Terry Borzumato. Doreen Duell and Grace Scottoj. Individually. the High Average, High Game, and High Series tro- phies were all won by the same person - Lauri Grasso of ATU. Lauri averaged 145.7, had a high game of 194. and a high series of 506. On the whole. the women played competitively while enjoying themselves. That's what made 1979 a great season. Led by Tom Crim- mins. Ron Vespa. and Conference A MVP. John Rhatigan. the Under- dogs became champions. They did it by beating the Wolfpack two straight in a best two out of three championship series, 68-55 and 83-71. Getting to the playoffs was fairly easy as the Llnderdogs encoun- tered only one tough game during the regular season against Animal House, with Vespa Q16 pointsj leading the Llnderdogs to a 55-49 overtime victory. ln the opening game of the playoff, the Underdogs soared to a 63- 43 win over Animal House.'ln the first game of the championship series. the Wolfpack came out fastbreaking to a 27-11 lead with 9 minutes left in the half. The Underdogs seemed stunned, but coach Tom MacNamara regrouped his team, and settled for an 8 point Wolfpack lead at the half. The Llnderdogs came out running and gunning in the second half with the momentum in their favor. With 14:30 left in the game. the Llnderdogs went up by two, 39-37. and held on to win. Crimmins staged the comeback. scoring 12 of his 18 points in the second half. while Vespa and Mike Farrell chipped in 10 and 8 second half points respectively. The Wolfpack slowed things down in Game 2 and maintained a four point lead at half time. The lead changed hands a number of times during the second half until the Underdogs began pulling away with the help of Vespa Q18 pointsj and Rhatigan Q24 pointsj. With 3:45 remaining, the Llnderdogs had mounted up a 70-53 lead. The Wolfpack tried desperately to come back. but the closest they came was 71-61 with 2:02 left. WOLFPACK As a newly formed team this year. the Wolfpack had an impres- sive season record of 6-2 and found themselves in an all-out battle with the Underdogs for the Conference Championsbip. Captained by Howie Savery and coached by team member. Ralph Porzio, the Wolfpack began the season with a heartbreaking double- overtime loss to Animal House. 80-76. But. the Pack bounced back and rolled off six big wins against some tough. veteran teams while losing just one more. Super-freshmen. Ron Zarrelli 128.3 point averagej and Bobby Clark 125.8 point averagel, led the offensive attack for the Wolfpack. finishing one and two as the conference's leading scorers. With a starting team made up of four All-Stars fClark. Javaruski. Porzio and Zarrellij, and a solid bench, the Wolfpack had a good shot at the Conference title. ln the opening round of the playoffs. the Pack ripped Parksy's Wonders. 76-49, as Kevin McKeever came off the bench and led all scorers with 22 points. Zarrelli and Clark added 19 and 16 points respectively. ln the championship series against the Underdogs. the Wolfpack lead early in both games with a balanced offensive attack by Clark and Chris Javaruski. But. the Championship-hungry Llnderdogs took away their hopes. PARKSY'S WONDERS Despite their ups and downs throughout the season, Parksy's Wonders finished with a .500 record Q4-43 and found themselves competing in post-season play. Probably their most impressive victory came in the second game of the season when they beat Animal House. 60-50, with Mike Gallagher scoring 21 points and captain Dave Parks adding 14. They also chalked up a couple of satisfying wins against Sigma Chi Q43-35 and 41- 371 and the Garden Staters Q82-761. ln the playoff game, the fastbreaking and rebounding of the Wolf- pack was too much for Parksy's Wonders as the Wolfpack eliminat- ed their hopes for a Championship title. cunlinued 5 ii . Evan Cailas netted 25 points and Steve Madden added 19. The team. captained and coached by senior guard Donny Oddo 117.8 point averagej. went on to win a couple and lose a couple. resulting in a 4-4 record. Chalking up impressive wins against the Garden Staters, 74-58. and the Indians, 80-52, they capped off the regular season by nipping Sigma Chi. 70-69, giving them some momentum for the playoffs. In the playoffs. Animal House met the Underdogs but their regular season momentum was not enough to handle them. SIGMA CHI, GARDEN STATERS. INDIANS Sigma Chi Upsilon squeaked through the season with a 3-5 record. After losses to Parksy's Wonders. 43-35. and the Wolfpack. 72-65. Sigma Chi snapped off three in a row - topping the Indians. 41-32. the Garden Staters, 77-621with Ken Damstrom exploding for 40 pointsj. and Animal House, 66-57. The playoff trail dipped from sight. though, with losses to Animal House, 70-69, and the Underdogs. 94- 58. The Garden Staters struggled to a 2-6 record in their inaugural year. Led by guard Andy Perdek 123.1 point averagej. the Staters featured a run-and-gun offense that kept the team in every game. The high powered offense boosted the team to two wins over the veteran Indian team. Before suffering a mid-season collapse, the Indians demonstrated a fighting spirit that challenged the opposition. After close losses to the Underdogs, 79-70, and Sigma Chi, 41-32, the Indians won their only game of the season, a 57-53 overtime victory against Parksy's Wonders. with All-Star Bob Frietag scoring 24 points. Losses to Animal House and the Garden Staters ended the playing season for the Indians. Conference B ANIMAL HOUSE Animal House, which took the football crown by storm, captured the Conference B Championship by surprise. Captained by football standouts, Anthony Dippy Careccia and John Vacante, the team's success was anchored on 5'1 1 All-Star center, Dan DiVietri. DiVie- tri. who led the league in scoring with a 29.0 point average. set up many of the team's plays through sharp passing and strong re- bounding. A running offense and a steel trap defense were the features of the House's well-oiled machine. n unblemished season record appeared on the horizon as Animal House pummelled the opposition -59-27 over DPU. a forfeit win over the Missed Shots. 84-27 over the Indians. and 85-55 over the Baby Bulls. However, runner-up DPU had other plans as they sidetracked Animal House, 79-59. Somewhat shaken, but certainly not struggling, the team mopped up the sea- son. topping the forfeiting Missed Shots. the Indians. 72-61, and the Baby Bulls. 79-63. In the divisional tie-breaker. Vacante led the way with 21 points. including the winning basket, as Animal House held on. 59-58. A pesky Rebel team arose in the playoffs, and the House needed luck and skill to hold off the spirited freshmen. Down by one point with two seconds left. DiVietri missed the front end of a one-and-one. Robert PeeWee Morrongiello's tap missed. but DiVietri's rebound buzzer shot gave Animal House a 68-67 co meback thriller. The magic continued into the championships. The wind was out of the Crusaders' sails. and Animal House showed no mercy. In the clincher. Vacante scored 16 first half points and the defense blanked conference MVP, Randy Cogger. in the first half for a 30-15 half time bulge. Despite the 30 points scored by Cogger 1161 and Ken Field 1145 in the second half, the Crusaders never again threatened as Animal House swept the two game series. 61-52. ontinued , W WWW W my '40-,A 100 Tomahawk CRUSADERS Behind the leadership of 6'5 player-coach Rob Ross 122.0 point averagej and MVP Randy Cogger 120.1 point averagej. the Crusad- ers breezed through the season with a 7-1 record. A mid-season forfeit scarred what would have been a perfect record for the Crusaders. The squad rolled off winning streaks of four and three games. lncluded in these streaks were double wins over the Trojans. 71-55 and 71-45. the Rebels. 57-46 and 58-48, and the Harps ll. 74-39 and 75-30. Only the forfeit to the Rockets. after beating the same team. 49-19. blemished the record. The collapse in the Championships was foreshadowed by the first half play against DPU in the opening round of the playoffs. DPU jumped out to a 15-11 half time lead. but the Crusaders came roaring back to outscore DPU 39-23 in the second half as Cogger scored a game high 23 points in the 50-38 win. The opening game blahs seemed to dissipate in the first half of the Championship Series opener against Animal House as the Crusad- ers leaped to a 33-20 half time lead. However. Animal House came out firing in the second half and the Crusaders fell. 53-50. On top of it all. Ross was sidelined after the game with a knee injury. With the steam missing from the Crusaders' drive. Aninal House won the second game of the series. 61-52. to take the championship. DELTA PSI UPSILON After losing their season opener to Animal House. Before falling to Animal House in a special divisional playoff, DPU knocked off the Missed Shots on a forfeit. the lndians. 65-44. Animal House. 79-59. the Baby Bulls, 53-41. the Missed Shots, on another forfeit. the lndians in a record setting 104-52 victory. and the Baby Bulls. 53-41. Four individuals, Tom Dimino. Strongman Paul Gam- betta twisted an ankle in the first half. and Fiori. who kept the half time deficit to three with 17 first half points, injured his ankle in the second half warmups. Despite these injuries. DPU strengthened their defense. but lost by one. 59-58. The second half 21 point explosion of Randy Cogger left the frat stunned as the Crusaders pulled out a 50-38 victory. BABY BULLS The Baby Bulls were booked for a tough see-saw trip into the playoffs, but the tough Western Division shut that route down. The season's log reads like a wave length - sharp ups and downs. Knockouts. cruised through the league with a perfect 8-0 record. The Knockouts' first victory came against Circle K with freshman All-Star Suzanne McNulty scoring 17 points in the 31-15 win. DKD provided stiff competition in the next contest. but the eventual champions prevailed, 42-39, as McNulty again scored 17 points. The Knockouts triumphed, 33-26, over defending champion SCC as McNulty and All-Star fo- ward Beth Buchanan provided 21 points combined. ATU was the next victim of the Knockouts' steamroller, 35-18, as McNulty led all scorers with 23 points. The second half of the season was an instant replay: Circle K. 30-15. DKD, 48-26, SCC, 31-29. and ATU, 28-25, were again topped as the Knockouts warmed up for the champion- ships. With an All-Star starting team, Qalong with McNulty and Buchanan were guard and captain Carol Hynes. forward Elaine Anzalone and center Sue Aielloj, coach Ron Vespa prepared the squad for the Championship Game against Cir- cle K Qwho had beaten DKD to gain the finalsj. Behind the crisp passing and playmaking of Hynes, the Knockouts jumped out to a 17-12 half time lead. ln the second half, the Circle K club closed the gap to three. 28-25. but the Knock- outs' magic returned as the team, behind McNulty's fast breaks and Hynes' layups. rolled off a 13-3 spurt to win the championship, 41-28. CIRCLE K Championship contender Circle K had an impressive record of 5-3 this season with freshman All-Star and league MVP. Crissa Caponi. leading the way. After suffering losses to the Knockouts and DKD Q in overtimej. Circle K bounced back to win five of the next six games. including a stunning 62-44 win over DKD. ln that game, Crissa Caponi scored 51 points fa new record at St. John'sy as both teams scored more points f106j than had previously been scored in a women's intramural basketball game here. ln the playoff against DKD, Circle K sloshed to a 19-16 half time lead with both teams performing at a sub-par level. With 8:01 left in the game, Circle K led comfortably, 31-24, howev- er, DKD roared back taking the lead with less than one minute left, 33-32. A Caponi steal and subsequent layup gave the final championship berth to Circle K, 34-33. con tinued FIS March 103 104 Tomahawk 5... 'MW-x DKD DKD started the season on fire, beating defending champi- on SCC and the tough Circle K squad by identical scores of 28-26. The champion Knockouts momentarily delayed the express with a 42-39 loss Qdespite freshman Mary Ann San- giorgio's 13 pointsj. DKD returned to the winner's circle with a 36-31 victory over ATU as Sangiorgio Q16 pointsj and classmate Fran De- Sio Q12 pointsy scored in double figures. DeSio was sidelined after this game and DKD slumped. dropping the next three before evening the record at 4-4 with a 36-26 win over ATU. ln that streak, DKD's troubles turned to tragedy as Circle K gained revenge. 62-44, in a record-setting contest. ln the playoff against Circle K, DKD fell in the last minute. 34-33, despite Sangiorgio's 18 points and the re-appearance of DeSio. SCC Defending champs, SCC QThe Super Cool Chicksj, strug- gled to a 3-5 season as personnel losses took a heavy toll on the team. Captained by All-Star playmaker Diane Walsh 02.0 point averagej, SCC'S bst performance of the season was against playoff-bound DKD. Three players. Walsh Q11 pointsj, Lynn DeForte Q12 pointsj and Marie Ferro Q10 pointsj. combined for 33 points as SCC whipped DKD, 43-20. A valiant effort fell short against the Knockouts, 33-26, as Walsh netted 12 points. SCC bumped ATU twice, 20-19 and 26-19 with Walsh scoring 16 points. ATU ATLl's first game against DKD was symbolic of ATLl's season in general: a lot of promise. but no fulfillment. ln that game. ATU jumped to a 14-4 lead and was in total control at the half. 22-14. as All-Star Karen Franzen scored 19 points. The trouble started early in the second half as Franzen and Carolyn Harris fouled out quickly. The dam burst. and ATU fell. 36-31. Little else went right for the sorority as the team often found itself victims of the opposition's accurate shooting or its own mistakes. Despite the winless season.
