Following graduation, he entered the Vincentian Minor Seminary at Princeton, New jersey, in Sep- tember, 1940, at the age of fourteen. In J une, 1946, he was received into the Novitiate of St. Vincent de Paul, Germantown, Pennsylva- nia. Having pronounced his Holy Vows on June 17, 1948, he entered Mary Immaculate Seminary, Northampton, Pennsylvania. At the completion of his studies there, he was ordained a Vincentian Priest by Bishop Joseph Mc Shea on May 30, 1953. His first assignment after ordination was with the Central Associ- ation of the Miraculous Medal office in his hometown of Philadel- phia. In 1954, he began his long association with St. Iohn's. At St. Iohn's Prep, which was then a part of the University, he taught English, moderated the school paper, THE RED OWL, directed the school plays and finally in 1957, assumed the position of Headmas- ter. During this period of his life, Father found time to acquire a Master's Degree in Philosophy. Joining the faculty of Niagara Uni- versity in 1960, he taught philosophy and continued to study for his Doctorate. In 1965 his superiors assigned him to St. Iohn's Universi- ty to finish his degree work. The Ph.D. was his in 1967. For the next eight years, Father Nelson was the ever popular professor of Philos- ophy on the Queens Campus. His classes were always well attended and his students regarded him with affection and admiration. Father Nelson's deep concern with matters of Contemporary Church The- ology occupied much of his time. There are few who read as deeply or thought as meticulously as did Father Nelson. In August, 1975, it was the Staten Island Campus' gain to have Father Nelson appointed Associate Dean of Notre Dame College. In his short time on this campus. Father got to know many students and was able to call them by their first names. Just as he was the competent professor of philosophy on the Queens Campus, in a very short time he became the kind, zealous administrator on the Staten Island Campus. His door was never closed to students. It is a fact that he often missed his lunch hour to be available to help anyone who sought him out. The 1976 TOMAHAWK, students, faculty, administrators and staff, of the Staten Island Campus pay tribute to this holy priest, dedicated teacher and able administrator. May he rest in peace. The editors of the yearbook tried to understand the lack of student interest in various organizations, especially the TOMAHAWK. Our conclusion was that it wasn't necessarily so that students lacked interest in organizations, but have other obligations. The most common after class activity fbesides hanging-outj is WORK , These next six pages are devoted to the industrious working student of S.J.U., S.I. Campus. Fifty Two With today's job market especially tight, two recent St. John's University, S.I. Campus graduates, Steve Beninati fMay '75J and Richie Nicotra Uanuary '76J opened their own business. Their new business venture EVERYTHING YOGURTH of 51 Broadway, N.Y.C. was estab- lished after careful research and market studies. The product is frozen yogurt and is served in various flavors and forms from sundaes with unlimited toppings to platters with lobster, tuna and egg salads. Other items on their menu include freshly squeezed fruit juices, homemade soups and their own unique invention - the YONUT . The yonut is a donut filled with the fresh frozen yogurt of your choice, The grand opening of EVERYTHING YOGURT was held on March 29, 1976 with an enormorous turnout of friendly well-wishers and customers. Baby Moo Moo ta cowl of Klages Farm, S.I. helped in the day's festivities by advertising the grand opening. She also made her television debut when Bob Lape of ABC's Eyewitness News interviewed her along with Steve and Richie about the grand opening of EVERYTHING YOGURT on the 6 o'cloclc news. Steve while attending S.J.U. was president of the Experimental College, Photography Club and the Horticultural Society and was also Business Manager and Photography Editor of the TOMAHAWK. Richie was active in the Speech Forum and was also chairperson of Student Union. Steve and Richie prove that there are no limits to the illustrious S.j.U. student.
