Of all conceptf, that of the balanced individual, from the point of view of both being and doing, Jeem: moft difficult to eftablifh ae a living reality, apparently becauxe it take: a more difciplined, more a.rtute, and more unfelfifh perfon to manipulate the fulcrum than to xwing with the ecftafief and deprenion: of the extrernex. Each graduating clan if a perfonality. One who view: each with an implicit parental devotion ha: little difficulty in identifying and lauding it: Jtrengthr. At the fame time, he wixtfully wifhef he could eliminate the weakneue: or the negative force: which caufe deviationf from the preconceived ideal. If any St. Iohn'J clan ha: experienced ftrainx and Jtreuex, it if that of 1959. Never before ha: college adminion been I0 competitive! Drop everything! Hit the booh1! Science.i' Mathematicxf The atomic race! Mathematic!! Science! There have not only been thefe. And yet the Clan of 1959 hat not only Jtood Jquarely at the fulcrumf it haf :teadfaftly and enthuxiaftically manipulated it to the immeafurahle benefit of every member of the ychool community. Firm and imaginative leaderxhip, Juperior fcholarxhip that cannot be denied by the mott exacting imtitution of higher learning, champion- fhip athletic achievement, polifhed activity performance, Jpiritual devotion to the ideal: of the fchool, humility. and a pofitive refpect for each worthwhile thread in the intricately woven pattern of human intereftf,-the Clan of 1959 carrief the concept of the balanced individual refolutely into the yearf of the future, confident that thif concept can be a reality. lj4lau1 again C56bsey HEADMASTER, St. john'J School. entered St. john's in 1946. T owner Reynolds TYACL The track team was firmly established for the first time this year. The team, led by Captain jerry Axelrod and totaling nearly forty boys, has eleven returning lettered lettermen and many more boys with experience from last year. The season had not begun when this article went to press and we therefore have no statistics from this year's team. However, the enthusiasm of the team was at a new peak, probably because of the new system instituted by This yeat's basketball season started off well, but the team ran into difficulty later in the season. The final record was 21-4. Ironically, three of these losses came at the hands of conference opponents. Early in the year, the Rebels won the Friendswood Tournament, and later, after Christmas vacation, they defeated Kinkaid by 21 points. Next came Lutheran, whom the Rebels defeated in a close game. Perhaps the high point of the season came late in January when St. johns won over Aldine, 57-52. After the Aldine game, the Rebels lost to Lutheran and Kinkaid Coach Bode. It might be called the buddy system , for each experienced man has a novice under his wing. He is responsible for teaching this boy the fundamentals of their particular event. The boys are not limited in their training to their buddy however, and everybody has instruction from one of the coaches, either Mr. Bode, Head Coach, or one of his able assistants, Mr. Duckett, Mr. Hendrix, and Mr. Wallace. by a total of 5 points. They beat Allen Academy decisively, and then traveled to Oklahoma City in order to finish their season. They beat St. Mark's and Greenhill of Dallas and St. Stephen's of Austin, losing only to the host team, Casady. Dave Steward and Al Hildebrand received honorable mention for all-conference, with Al finishing the season as the leading scorer and rebounder. The lettermen were: Captain David Steward, George Bateman, Larry Favrot, Tim Goodwin, Dan Gordon, Al Hildebrand, Ronnie Lee, Jon Reed, Bill Risser, and Bill Shuart. Under the guidance of Coach Lamar Lee, the Rebels, playing their first year of T-formation football, compiled a record of 7 wins and 1 loss, winning the Southern Preparatory Conference title by defeating St. Mark's of Dallas 27-6 in their last game of the season. Against Kinkaid, the Rebels made a poor showing even though they held the Falcons to minus yards rushing. After they defeated TMI, the Rebels met Casady in their The Girls' Varsity Basketball Team, coached by Mr. Osburn, won the S.P.C. Championship, finishing the season with a 16-5 record. Early season losses to more experieced teams were justified by an excellent showing of no defeats in conference play. With a per game average of 51.3 points, the leading scorers were Deborah Detering and Cindy Davis with averages of 20.3 and 17.2 respectively. girls, gasket-Lal, SEASON'S RECORD Klein 36 La Porte - 44 Halletsville 42 63 Deer Park Alumni Mt. Hopes of the Conference title were rekindled when St. Mark's beat Casady for the Northern district championship, setting the stage for the final game between the Rebels and St. Mark's Lions. Captain Alfred Hildebrand, Captain-elect Bill Risser, Larry Favrot, and Bill Shuart were named to the all- conference team, with Jerry Axelrod selected for the all-district team. ' The team this year consisted of Captain Deborah Detering, Cindy Davis, Muffie Moroney, Binky Peters, Marcia Heyne, Shari Cooper, Romelia Favrot, Janie Iosey, Margaret Bailey, and Nancy Green. Tweed Smith was the scorekeeper. St. john's received five of the seven places on the all- conference team.
