lt seems luke only yesterday-so the cluche beguns Yet ut does seem luke just the other day when we were green luttle freshmen mouths ogope at the vastness of the Prep and uts buuldungs But let s retrace our steps from the begunnung the real begunnung of our secondary school educotuon at Saunt John s Most of us would have to say that our Prep lufe actually started un the eughth grade for un that year we decuded on St John s as our place of further study And so on a balmy Aprul mornung we took an entrance exam for the Prep un whuch for tunately we were all successful So we spent the summer dreamung of lufe at the Prep and what ut would be luke The Fall of 55 eventually came wuth regustratuon for all of us wee freshmen Receuvung un the gym the ummense number of books allotted to each student we realuzed wuth a sunkung feel ung that hugh school was no yoke Our brothers cousuns and older fruends were rught when they saud lts not a cunch at the Prep And how fearsome the Brothers seemed on that fateful furst day' Brother Stanley trued especually hard to be pleasant and to make our 'angled nerves settle down and we were glad he was a freshman teacher Brothers Ernest Francus de Sales Luke Carey Melvun Columkulle and Norman lukewuse strove to elumunate flrst day tensuons ln Brother Stanleys classes nothung academuc was at tempted for the furst two days Instead Brother held a get acquaunted peruod un each of hus classes And dudn t a glow come unto our cheeks when we learned that he had gone through the struggle humself and had graduated from the Prep just seven years earluer' Brother Francus de Sales started thungs goung un busuness luke style wuth Tom Barretts recutal of Femlna, femunae, femunae femunam femuna But Brother Norman s Algebra was one of the most unter estung classes durung that furst year Whether expoundung a pruncuple of multuplucatuon of polynomuals land who us there that does not remember the My Dear Aunt Sally rule9l or castugatung a student un uproaruous fashuan he always com manded and receuved our unduvuded attentuon and respect Who can forget Hey Guogluo lus that rught Maruo7l or the day Ralph chucked Brother Melvuns steam engune out the wundow at Brother Norman s unsustence7 Soon however we were well under way unto the school year Nate Masterson J C Cabral and Pete Malkowsku proved theur worth on the J V gruduron and we all cheered our upperclassmen on the varsuty wuth true Prep spurut Mud years came and went leavung us dazed but vuctaruous Two frosh dayhops Bruan Chambers and Dave Bernardun were for tunate enough to make the golf and tennus teams respectuvely Sprung cautuously approached, and we all dreamed lun class too Tsk, tsk'l of summer and the days when we would no longer be freshmen, but sophomores, those superuor beungs who lorded ut over the freshmen HISTORY OF THE Eventually ut happened we were no longer freshmen but sophomores chompung at the but Although ut was summer we could hardly waut to arruve on the Prep campus scene un the Fall of 56 and begun a yearlong domunance over the new Prep arruvals Struttung luke gamecocks we proudly ocknowl edged ourselves as veterans of Prep lufe and made the freshmen acknowledge ut too' Feelung ut below our dugnuty we nevertheless condescended to afcept the heady broun assugnments of Brother Gules who un the prevuous year had munustered to our unner needs canteen prefect We were mystufued by the Pythagorean theorem the curuous propertues of the 300 600 900 truangle and other bafflung complexutues of plane geometry Neverthe less our geometry teachers Brothers Thomas Andrew Melvun and Funtan succeeded eventually un gettung them through our heads Caesars Galluc wars French pronuncuatuon Sponush verbs all these were un tume mastered by us un our second year at Saunt John s On the athletuc scene J C Cabral Bob Egan and Pete Malkowsku all made the varsuty football team and on the J V Basketball team stars luke Kerrugan and Ruckus were guvung a prevuew of theur potentual to be realuzed on the varsuty quuntet two years later In thus fateful year Ralph Devlun was to begun hus spec tacular ruse to fame from vendor on Brother Stanley s gravy traun to senior cafeterua asssutant wuth two years experience horts even got out of the red9 Perhaps the reason us that Brother had such profut eaters on the payroll as saud Devlun Bernardun Masterson et al lnevutably Caesar wrapped up the Helvetuan campaugn the three conjugatuons of French verbs were mastered funals were at hand and passed to our great satusfactuon Yes we had reached the half way mark at St John s Two more years of luke effort lso we thoughtl would make us senuors ready to graduate When we returned to the Prep campus un the Fall of 57 we began to realuze that soon lufe would have a deeper mean ung to us even as students In thus year we would take Na tuonal Merut Tests and the all umportant College Boards and thus un thus year careful preparatuon for college seekung would commence Durung thus eventful year the furst strung of the football team was enhanced wuth such stars as Bud Ruckus who dud a bang up job un the season s opener John Cabral a good offen suve back but even more valuable on defense Pete Malkowsku a bug rough defensuve luneman Moruarty the capable alter nate quarterback Tom McTeague fleetfooted back, and other stellar players such as Egan Cahull OConnor Chambers Reully and Powers Scholastuc wuse we were dusmayed by the complexutues of physucs claumed by most to be the hardest sub ject at the Prep Algebra ll also gave us some bad
