English and S eech The primary function of the English Department is to give the student frequent opportunities to develop his ability to speak and write correct, clear and effective sentences and paragraphs. The student reads for under- standing and enjoyment, and consequently, learns the value of good reading. The grammar for the first three years is a complete review and understanding of the fundamentals of the English language. Fourth year grammar is college preparatory. In all of the English classes spelling and vocabulary is an essential part of the course. Literature in the first two years is a reading of types of prose and poetry. Third year literature stresses the study of American masters, while in the fourth year the student is introduced to the British authors. The Speech -course is required by all seniors. The class meets twice ,a week for the full school year. The students are trained in all types of speech from conversa- tion to formal speeches.
