Waters, M.A. French Robertj Prior MA Robert G Fontaine B A The English program aims to teach the student to read, write, and speak well in accordance with his maturity. It is a four year program in grammar rhetoric, expression, reading and literature The grammar for the first three years consists of detailed examination of grade school work, whereas fourth year grammar is mainly preparatory exei cises for college entrance. The speeches for the first two years are designated by the teachers. In the third year instead of individual speeches, debates are held. Finally in the fourth year the students prepare their own speeches each year and also some shorter works The Speech Department consists of th-ree groups which include both seniors and juniors. The teachers are Father Daniel Donovan, C.M., and Mr. Peter Caffrey. It is a half-year course and has for its purpose facility in all field from conversation to formal speeches. The course originated as an informal subject, but during the last two years it has become a real textbook and exam course. It also requires, once during the course, each student to make a speech approximately for ten to Hfteen minutes. The' course incorporates visual aid and electronic devices, such as tape recorders and telephone training equipment Speech class students listen to a tape recording of their speeches . I , . . . A nw , . yt., Mr. Gerald B. Ceis, B.A. Physics St. Iohn's Prep offers a science program designed to meet college specifications. This year Biology is a required science course for the Freshmen. They have fully equipped laboratory facilities conveniently located in their own building. The course also is being offered as an elective for the present Sophomores. Juniors may take Physics, in which the fundamentals of their science are fully explored and then tested by experiments in a well-organized lecture and lab,' program. Rounding out the scientific courses is Chemistry, which is present in the Senior year.
