Reverend JOHN C. HALLAHAN, C.M. Assistant Spiritual Counsellor Department The guidance program at St. john's Prep is an integrated plan of moral and academic counseling which aims to assist the student in his period of transition from boyhood to adult life. The Spiritual Counselors, Fathers Thomas Concagh, C.M., john Hallahan, C.M., Daniel Donovan, C.M., and Thomas McGourty, C.M., together with Mr. George Gardiner, Student Adviser, and the entire faculty are available for conferences with individual students to advise and counsel in any of their needs and interests. Each student also is scheduled for two periods of group guidance each week and at least two personal interviews each year. The formation of moral and religious character is not confined to the classrooms of the Prep. In all his school activities the student is faced with some object that tends to implant the Catholic spirit into his being. I The crucifix on the classroom wall, prayer before and after class, daily Mass celebrated in ,our chapel, visits to the chapel, constant associa- tion with priests, Catholic companions, approved text books - all tend to guide and leave their impression on the student's mind. Each student is scheduled to a religion class each day, and he must pass four years of religion successfully before being graduated. Bi-weekly meetings of the Blessed Virgin Sodality are held in the adjacent parish church, and all stu- dents must attend. A day is set aside for the monthly communion, and each student must attend the annual retreat. GEORGE H. GARDINER, B.A. Guidance Director Father Concagh interviews Ed Reilly. Confessions are heard daily for those wishing to avail themselves of this privilege. The program of academic guidance extends over the four years that the student is at the Prep. Under the direction of Mr. Gardiner, it is the aim of this program to orientate the student to the routine of high school life, to assist him in his program of study, and to interpret for him his career potentials in the light of his academic performance and abilities. These objectives are obtained by providing the following services: instruction in study and reading, individual conferences, intel- ligence and aptitude tests, personality and interests tests, and scheduled classes in group guidance. Each student in his Junior and Senior years is scheduled for classes which acquaint him with the offerings of various colleges, college entrance examinations, scholarship tests, requirements for admission to colleges, and an outline of the work done and requirements necessary in professional and occupational fields. The two sections of guidance do not conflict, for the Spiritual Counselors and the Student Adviser work hand-in- hand to assist and prepare the student to enter adult and college life in an intelligent Catholic manner.
