Back Row: Kevin Dowd, Bob Veritch, Joe Wilson, Henry Kloswski, Charley Jowaiszas, Bob Romanelli, The St. John's Prep nine of 1950 battled its way to the Vincentian's second consecutive Brooklyn title, but failed to duplicate the 1949 club's city championship by falling to a scrappy St. Ann's aggregation in the play-offs. Compiling a 9-1 record in league play, the Tribe com- pletely dominated play during the entire campaign. The Redmen's pitching staff was one of the main causes for the Warrior's 1950 success. Bill Quinn, the Red and White number one hurler, was ably supported by Pete Meyers and the young freshman sensation, Chick DeThomases. The catching was handled by Ronnie Kuhn and George Eskenbrenner. ln the infield, two newcomers helped the lndian's cause with their timely hitting and steady fielding. Bob Coccodrilli, a converted third baseman, took over the first base job left vacated by Bob McGirr, while young Walt Brady became firmly established as the Tribe's new third sacker. Jim Mirabile was the only regular to return to the outer garden. Johnny Sisko established himself as the Redmen's centerfielder with his steady hitting, while the right field job went to a left-handed speedster, John Powers. The Redmen completed the regular season with a brilliant 19-2 overall record. St. Francis Prep, who cap- tured second place honors in league play, inflicted the only defeat during the second half of the season. The 1951 edition of the Hessmen have four regulars gone from the starting lineup, Bill Quinn, Gerry Mayer, and Jim Mirabile, and John Sisko. The pitching staff is headed by Chick DeThomasis, Pete Meyers, and Jack Dalton, while the infield has Coccodrilli at first, Ed Rip- pili as the new second sacker, Lynk at short, and Brady at the far corner. ln the outer garden, there are two newcomers, Jim Shea in left and Charlie Cheswick in centerfield, while John Powers again patrols his rightfield sector. This year's Vincentian nine will find the going a bit tougher than last year. The loss of Quinn's pitching and the hitting of Mayer and Mirabile will definitely be felt by the Warriors, but a steady pitching job by DeThomasis and some timely hitting Brady, Powers, and Lynk could bring the Indians another championship.
