asketball The l95O-'51 edition of the Lewis Avenue Warrior's proved to be one of the leading fives in the Metropolitan area. Under the expert coaching of Herb Hess, who com- pleted his twenty-fifth year as basketball mentor at the Prep, the Indians amassed a spectacular 20-l record during regular season's play, and came within two points of their second consecutive city championship. Playing stand-out ball the entire campaign, the Red and White easily captured the Brooklyn Championship. The only team that proved a serious threat was St. Francis Prep. It was the Franciscans who inflicted the Redmen's only loss of the regular season's play. In the second meeting of these two clubs, the Hessmen scored a 51-45 victory, giving them the borough title. The Vincentians attack this season was led by Captain Phil Sagona, All-City guard, who averaged sixteen points per league game. Other important factors in the Tribe's title drive were the rebounding of Danny Lynk and set shooting of Joe Venables gave the Redmen a tremendous edge. Joe Donnelly, the Hessmen's floor-man, played a terrific outside game the entire year, while Bill Cowley gave the Tribe some extra scoring punch. Truly it can be said that the main reason for the Vincentian's success this seascn was that they were a hustling, smooth and smart functioning club that made its own breaks.
