Naturally we were f timid in our new environment, but we were eagerly imbued with hopeful aspir- 1 ations. We were entering upon a new stage in the world. The setting was .T St. John's, but this time we were playing for keeps. How those first few weeks i lagged on and on, until we finally adapted ourselves to the Prep and to one another. We became easy prey to the wiles of the sophomores and the tricks of ,ga sf' M. 5 .WI t . 1 l is is' .ii iziuizaiaizr mesa li T T' the cunning juniors but we held respect for the older, sophisticated Seniors. W4 K H The difficulties of Latin and Algebra were emphasized on our monthly report f 7 T cards. Our first exhibition of school spirit was the St. Patrick's Day Parade. We weren't all lrishmen, but we showed the school that the Freshmen counted A 'Q as well. Before we had realized it, the term was drawing to a close. The boat- ride to Rye Beach, where the whirling cyclone and leaky canoes climaxed one ,l of the most exciting days in our Freshman year. After the summer vacation we returned eager and happy. The ranks were .t diminished slightly for obvious reasons, but despite this handicap we pro- Syl ceeded to tackle another successful term. Football was the big thrill this time of year and how we marveled at the success of our gridiron heroes. , X f Wfyf 1? 7 a ff ..ff'r f Following the turkey day tilt, we carried our enthusiasm through the . ,, basketball competition into the baseball season. Here our class was first repre- ff f sented on the athletic field by Howie Maher and Al Cheswick. Time passed jf, , rapidly and soon our freshman year had terminated. During a repeat perform- P il ance in our sophomore and junior years, we swung ourselves into the social life J of the Prep. it We finally reached the most cherished goal of all St. .lohn's students . . . 1 - Af my 4 1' 4 1, I .,i 4 X I the Senior year. By this time our classmates had worked themselves into every W' , Prep activity. Our own Jack Keenan, voted best athlete, helped to bring the X . . . . . Prep its second baseball championship in four years. The grim prospect of l X' ' what lay ahead was lightened by the biggest thrill of our lives . . . the Senior W Prom, at the Essex House. Memories of this occasion will remain with us forever. Returning to our last term at the Prep, after the summer vacation, we set ourselves to the task of completing our scholastic and social endeavors at St. John's. This term Tom Mallaghan, captain of the football team, ascended to the Presidency of the Student Council. The Pow Wow, the most lavishly. decorated dance ever, brought memorable hours to the twinkle-toed Prepsters -. l 111, .ffl 1 present. Highlighting the events of the night was the presentation of a four ' year college scholarship to Charlie Helmken, for his outstanding contributions to the Prep, as the class Rembrandt , T For the first time in the history of the Prep, the socially-minded prospec- tive graduates asked for and received . . . a Senior Party. This final gathering of the Class of i950 will long be.a standout in their hours of reminiscence. Finally the curtain descended on graduation night, closing our four year Vi, .f stay at St. John's, The intellectual and moral training acquired during our high ' e school career, and the traits of character instilled into us will aid us tremen- 1 ll ji l 4, X 7 il 4 fi if fl ,f f T. dously in achieving success in our future endeavors.
