With Treasurer Liz Kinzer and Secretary Allen Eustace, a very successful food drive was held over Christmas, and a gloriously successful Volleyball ISST dance was held. Thursday night dances have become traditional at St. John ' s and last but not least, after careful organization, planning, and campaigning, music has once more found its place on C-Level. Spanish Club The legacy of Spam all around the world encompasses language, customs, culture, traditions and even whole political systems. From California to Chile, from Philippines to the islands of Fer- nando Po (not to mention our own dear BelgiumI) Spain has left its indelible mark. The Spanish Club is a combined effort of students, parents and teacher to introduce interested people to that world of Spanish culture. 74 anish Club The Club ' s activities include our contributions to Arts Night . We have given an insight into Spanish poetry and dance world wide. We went from San Juan de la Cruz, via Garcia Lorca to Andres Eloy Blanco, and from Venezuelan Aguinaldos to the An- dalusian Sevillanas into the Venezuelan Joropo. We had many prominent speakers from the Spanish speaking world, one of our special guests to date was the Ambassador of Vanezuela. General Jose Antonio Olavarria. Mrs. Keats (Spanish Teacher) m Varsity Boys From an outsider ' s point of view — as well as from one in the know , this team has been a fine example of what teamwork and friendship can do to performance. It is easy to understand a specta- tor ' s comment: I wouldn ' t want to be on the opposing team! Gary Butsko ' s powers of intimidation, Louis Toth ' s mean look (not to mention what Shane Rice can do for a mean look — see his senior candid photo?), Steve Wiens ' and John Ainger ' s skill at the net as well as the hustle of Moran and Farrel gave the team 7th place in the ISSTs !1_ 78 Volleyball Preparing for the unknown serve :• ' I 79 Varsity Girls The 1987 Varsity Girl Volleyball was season marked by dedication, hare work, and lots of improvement. The main events of the season were the team trip to Salzburg in training for European finals in Munich, and the entire team ' s one night journey to London for ISSTs. The girls varsity team as a whole, were the number one team in the Benenor division, and brought in a third trophy for Europeans as well as in ISSTs. The boys J.V. season was filled with ups and downs. Fortunately, they ended up on a very high peak — bring- ing home the first place trophy! The Varsity boys team, running as individuals, also did very well. The Most Valuable Player for boys was Mark Clingan, and for girls was Lisa Pavlock. This year ' s Girls Basketball Team was off to a roaring start with only four returning members but alot of ambition and energy. They lost their first game against Antwerp but got to work during prac- tice and claimed back to back victories against ISB. Coach Karen Braune has done a won- derful job, but even the best coach must admit that with- out talented and motivated players, a season will amount to nothing! 125 Middle School L to R: front — Coach Price-, Skalleberg, K; McCahill. The 1987 Middle School Soccer Team did an impressive job this fall season with solid talent, high spirits and an exhausted coach. Returning starters included Crazy Legs Karume, Midget Kremer, Stonewall McCahill. Animal Mastor- oudes, Stud Valvo, Hewy Weight Hoffman, and. last but not least. Millsy Mills. Good sup- port from the sidelines added greatly to the team effort. 126 Soccer D7 Spain ' 87 March, 1987 — the Middle School trip to Spain got off to a promising start with about 30 students and fac- ulty landing at Malaga Airport to go by bus to Seville. In spite of lost bags, missing visas and hastily changed travel plans — (the excursion to Gi- bralter had to be cancelled), the group had. in the words of Setsuko Lloyd — a wonderful cultural exper- ience! The trip included visits to Cordoba and Granada ending with the return to Malaga. Activity Nights d l« ii i. Upper Section Mr. Anderson Top. The yearbook staff would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has worked so hard to improve our school. Its objective is to support the school ' s physical education and sports programs with spirit and funding. The yearly goals are met by backing the students during athletic contests; concessions are operated at home games; housing is provided for visiting athletes; evening activities are organized as an alternative to bar-hopping; uniforms are purchased for school teams; and a Booster Shop supplies physical education clothing and other items with St. John ' s logo. In recent years, the Booster Club has purchased such items as the tennis courts, a scoreboard, elementary physical education equipment, a video camera, gym dividers, trophy cases, and record boards. In order to give individuals of deserving standing a chance to study overseas, St. John ' s has had an arrangement with St. John ' s Washington for several years whereby two students are selected to represent the U.S. here in Belgium for one term. Chosen by an intricate selection process from a large number of applicants, Antonio Fernandez and Philip Alipio have found their nitch at St. John ' s — Waterloo.
