The Model United Nations is an organization which has given participating students an excellent insight into the constantly changing picture of world affairs today. Each year several hundred students from over 50 countries attend the annual convention which is held in the Hague. The country that each school is to represent is decided by a lottery. This year the country chosen for St. John ' s was El Salvador. The months of meetings and hard work finally paid off in the Hague. The students did extremely well in both committee and in the General Assembly. St. John ' s is very proud of representatives in the 1987 MUN. National Honor Society ■In October of 1986-7 seniors were in- ducted into the National Honor Soci- ety. The ceremony was conducted by Mrs. Stephan, and it included a break- fast for the inductees and their parents. The 7 new inductees all had high levels of achievement academically and in Ithe way of social service. All of the flk BfcjB LjFU inductees were either donating their C a5T ' 4b time for services in school or in the com- jKk munity. Another requirement for NHS was a high achievement in the four areas of qualification — character, The students who exemplified the four areas of qualification and were inducted scholarship, leadership, and service, were (from L-R) George Marroig, Diana Kollacks, Laura Swartele, Eric Oasthau- zen, Joli Toth, Lisa Wiens, and Fatima Suwesi. Student Council The ' 86- ' 87 student coun- cil worked throughout the year raising funds, cloth- ing, and food for the needy. Elementary 137 Primary Pumpkin Time On October 31st, 1986, the ghosts and hobgoblins came to the Primary section at St. John ' s. But, most of a there was a lot of fun. r Y V - ■3 t I ' m Joe-Pro Elementary 139 Christmas Concert This year the Primary Section cele- brated Christmas by having a Christ- mas concert. The message of the evening was peace on Earth. h W ii- 1 • - Elementary 141 Santa and St. Nick jr . € . - n t _ Have all of you been very very good?? I think a compromise is in order here! After attending this concert, one can much better understand Jesus ' statement — Unless you are converted and become like children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. The sincerety and innocence of our young performers beautifully illustrates this truth. __. 4 Music Jeunesses Musicales Once again the Orchestra Jeunesses Musicales de Brabant treated the children to a wide selection of classics by Purcell, Heyden, Mozart, Poulenc and Bizet. The Elementary school ' s lab of Apple HE terminals has a diversified selection of soft- ware designed to familiarize the preschooler with the general use of the computer, keyboard techniques and the use of graphics. At the time of this writing, the children are working to store each student ' s birthdate in memory and program the computer to print out birthday cards designed individually using the graphics programs. The creativ- ity of our little ones is outstanding and their ideas endless! Computers Computer assisted instruction in math, languages and writing skills has been a wonderful supplement to the elementary curriculum. For more advanced students, there are programs available to teach the lan- guage of BASIC as well as a sum- mer session of instruction in LOGO. With the expanding use of the com- puter for administrative purposes at St. John ' s there are numerous op- portunities to write and operate pro- grams taylored for specific needs within the school once the students have completed their elementary in- struction. The play No Exit is about three characters who are in hell (or rather Sartre ' s interpretation of it). In Sartre ' s portrayal, there are no torturers, racks, red-hot pincers and other paraphernalia. The three characters just stay in a room together. They become each others torturers, forcing each other to reveal the crimes and evil deeds committed while alive on earth. Judging from the round of applause following the production, it may be said that the audience thoroughly enjoyed this quality production. Activities 179 An Evening February 14, 1987 From women ' s eyes this doctrine I derive: They sparkle still the right promethean fire; They are the books, the arts, the academes, That show, contain, and nourish all the world. (Shakespeare: Love ' s Labors Lost) of the Arts 1 T f No less than 75 students, faculty and parents participated in this fourth annual Evening of the Arts. Under the competent instruction and guidance of Liz Stephan, Arts Night has become an established tradition at St. John ' s. After months of dedicated practice, frustrating rehearsals, electrical breakdowns, and lighting problems, the perfor- mance on Valentine ' s Day was, in the words of one of the parents, truly remarkable! t B ' ■M v M Liturgy r ' . jr Program - v li ' ■' • II 5 ft Qfe y f s 4 fh t In 1964, St. John ' s School was founded to meet a need expressed by several parents for a Christian education for their children. Since that time, the school has recognized this commitment in many ways — one being the maintenance of our liturgy program. Services are held periodically for all students and staff to gather together in recognition of our mutual need of God in daily life. With the guidance of several faculty, students at all levels actively participate and make each liturgy a unique experience. Jesus said, Give and it will be given to you . . . whatever measure you deal out to others, it will be dealt to you in return. The St. John ' s community is one in which the students and staff give of themselves and in so doing, practice the Word which Jesus taught. The spirit of the program is best described by one of our seniors: On Thanksgiving, St. John ' s had their annual liturgy on C-level. This year was very impressive. There was a great deal of organization put into it, and that showed. The students as well as the teachers were there to represent their different nationalities, to stand and publicly tell what they were thankful for, and the choir was present to liven up the atmosphere. At the end of the liturgy, the food and clothing drive came to a head. Boxes upon boxes were turned in. It was a wonderful sight to see how much people had given. What was collected is going to local charity, and everything was very much appreciated. It was good to know that St. John ' s could pull together as a community and reach out to the neighbor close to home. At the Middle and High School levels St. John ' s has both an active handbell troupe and a competent choir. Performances at ISB, St. Joseph ' s Church and other key locations in the Brussels area have been thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Laughin ' , smilin ' And hangin ' around With friends we ' ve known, And friends we ' ve found. Remember then. Look at now. Moving along As life will allow. Images may fade, As the years go by. But the memories we have Will never die. Remember friends With their special style That brightened the day With a simple smile. A laughter, a cry And even a tear May pass through our minds As we remember this year. Together we ' ve learned Together we ' ve grown, Cherishing forever The happiness we ' ve known We ' ve shared as one With the happy thoughts Of things we ' ve done. I Now the halls are empty.
