Many thanks, Mrs. Le Due, for your efforts and patience — you have certainly proved yourself indespensable to St. John ' s (once again)! Once again Fra Williams and her band of merry bakers tickled our palates with Ger- man goodies. PPPP Ski W 83 Boarding Residences a Home Away From Home Since 78 — 79, St. John ' s has had boarding facilities for high school students. The adopted parents for the girls ' residence are Mr. and Mrs. Paul Stachowiak, and the boys ' have taken on Mr. and Mrs. Roger Moran. It isn ' t easy for these parents to han- dle the responsibilities of this job, but they do, and with the same benevolence as real parents. The students themselves, by virtue of the close living situa- tion, establish a veritable comraderie. The girls share clothes like real sisters, and the boys act like real brothers (and we all know what that means). All in all, the residences provide a family-style atmosphere for students whose families aren ' t easily accessible. And we ' re sure glad to have those people here at St. John ' s. 87 Boys ' Residence Supplementary Education: Ms. Clair Christie Supplementary Education: Ms. Gail Eber Music: Ms. Diana Smithson Supplementary Education: Ms. Susan Grant Supplementary Education Coordinator: Ms. Lois Leonard Supplementary Education: Ms. Vanessa Watt Two complete Scottish kUts with no Scotsmen in them! Tuxedos and evening gowns were dusted off for the special occasion and even a few kilts were worn! King Joe Picard and Queen Susan Lawyer reigned supreme during the evening (which lasted until the early hours of the morning). Although people showed much less energy coming down the stairway at 6 am than they did going up, everyone still enjoyed themselves! rhe girls gathered to inspect the guys: Wow, check him out! . . . Thanksgiving Liturgy 1 f|_jt ' ; i % Pl KB Eh K ' M M -- - -- Csr J Z itf ■£■Thanksgiving is not just an American holiday — we learned that at our 1982 Thanksgiving liturgy. Students from different world nations offered thanks in their own ways, and shared their traditions with the entire high school. Then, a thespian group, under the direction of Mrs. Stephan, performed in an original play about the meaning of Thanksgiving. All the students who participated in the activities did a wonder job. But the ceremony itself was by no means dull. We, the family of St. John ' s, sat around a few tables and literally broke bread together — a tradition that takes place in many coun- tries. A delicious-looking display of breads from all over the world (from French bread to pita bread to corn- bread!) became a table of crumbs. The ritual was pro- bably one of the most touching ever celebrated at St. John ' s. Booster Bash, 1983 One of the most active groups on campus, the St. John ' s Booster Club, hosted its annual Booster Bash on March 5. After a tasty meal of ham and all the trimmings, the guests were treated to Marie MacCarthy ' s Irish Coffee and The Desert Song (also known as Beau Geste Rides Again ), a farcical romp through the burning sands. This original comedy was highlighted by some golden oldies and more recent musical numbers. The show was produced, directed and performed by parents, faculty and friends of St. John ' s. The pro- ceeds go to the sports program. After the success of this event, there are certainly many people who are eagerly awaiting Booster Bash ' 84! Science Fair Hurry, hurry! Step right up! See exhibits on fire, photography and ESP! Learn about drugs, alcohol and cigarette smoking! Explo- sions every hour on the hour! Don ' t miss the junior high science fair! It ' s completely free of charge! Talk your period 3 or 5 teacher into bringing you up to D-Level to witness this spectacular display! Model United Nations The annual Model United Nations meeting in the Hague was attended by our illustrious St. John ' s delegates in January. There, we rubbed elbows with the likes of Queen Beatrix, who chose to sit very near our table! But even without the presence of famous per- sonages, the atmosphere of the meeting was over- whelming. We had fun, and we even learned a thing or two! Thank you to Mrs. Wood who provided us with ex- cellent preparation and moral support throughout — we couldn ' t have done it without you! rsN Softball Day t % iw rt.( r M|||||| V 1 ■r : ' ■■- 1, « ' .■' . - % rits ' ■■' ' 7 Graduation, 1982 The culmination of the 1981-82 school year — the Commencement — was celebrated on Saturday, June 12. Although the class was the largest to graduate from St. John ' s (until this year!), the scene was in- timate: a closely-knit group of friends celebrated their success together. The ceremony was perhaps unusually poignant, due to the absence of Susan Lawyer, but she joined her classmates as an alumna of St. John ' s, several days later. KM w l 1 KE ' ! With an entire book revolving around food, we yearbook staff members get pretty hungry! So, we were looking for an excuse (any ex- cuse!) to have a party. We found one: the year- book ' s tenth anniversary! Sejour ' 83 is the tenth yearbook that St. John ' s has produced. St. John ' s has certainly come a long way since the Class of ' 74 (all twelve of them) roamed the halls. Some people who were here then still continue to give Sejour the help it needs to keep on going — people like Mrs. Greene and Dr. Branan (the 1978 yearbook was dedicated to these two). And Mr. Stack, veteran faculty advisor, was also around to help us eat some birthday cake. It is thanks to people such as these that Se- jour — and St. John ' s — continues to exist. We sincerely hope that we will continue to be blessed with such caring individuals — and chocolate cake! The Big Three Les Boissons Track and Field 1 to r: Coach Campbell, R. Ahlers, D. Fried, D. Our ' 82 season boasted of fifteen players, fifteen superstars! Most improved this year was Henrik Bacho, and the MVP was Ber- nard Le Due. Maybe our season wasn ' t that great, but it was a fun one. The Junior Varsity Superstars had a sensa- ional season. Captain (and goalie) Mike VicMahon led his team to a record of ten vins, three losses and one tie. At about a quarter of four every afternoon, what seemed like dozens of kelley green-clad joggers would terrorize Dreve Richelle and environs. There may not have been dozens of them, but the cross country team certainly was committed to its specialty! And they further impressed us spectators by the fine per- formances they gave in competition. John Horton, veteran runner, earned respect from the opposition this year, despite a knee injury. Debbie Coderre and Michelle Powers helped to form the backbone of the girls ' team. But everyone on the ' 82 cross country team deserves honorable mention for his her efforts. As the neighbors can testify, the team certainly gave it their all. Basketball The ' 82- ' 83 basketball season had its ups and downs, but one thing was apparent: the team members enjoyed the game and they enjoyed each other. There is nothing to match the kind of excitement the Var- sity girls felt when they soundly trampled ISB only two days after returning from the ski trip (our arch-rivals had been back for a week). On that same night, the Varsity boys lost to the Raiders by only three points — and gave them a run for their money all along. Few spectators had fingernails to speak of after that contest! And yet, while our players had this feeling of fierce rivalry on the court. Lions and Lionesses really enjoyed the com- panionship of their teammates. The bus rides, the mutual support at games, and extra social events between the players — friends — show that this is certainly no ordinary group of athletes. As player Brian McCarthy put it, What ' s the point of playing basketball if you don ' t have fun? Cheerleaders .V. CHEERLEADERS — M. T. When he ' s not teaching History or making up the ski trip room assignment lists, he ' s working on the IB program schedules. But for all this, Mr. Bartlett ' s still got time for individuals. Mrs. Clare Chais The high school secretary, Mrs. Chais, is never too tied up to help us out with even the smallest of problems. Whether we ' re having a problem with scheduling or with transcripts being sent to other schools, Mrs. Chais takes care of everything — and smiles as she does it! Brother Micheal Corry, Principal The epitome of the benevolent leader would have to be Br. Michael. A very fine ad- ministrator Br. Michael is also a very per- sonable guy — fun to talk to any time. The high school students certainly count our bless- ings when we look into the Principal ' s office. Mr. Roger Moran Mr. Moran . . . What can we say about him? We see him everywhere, it seems: at Monday morning assemblies, at the Boys ' Residence, in Physics class, in his office after we ' ve done something horrible . . . Sure, he scares us sometimes, but he sure is fun to get to know! Mrs. Nina Timar Mrs. Timar works in the administrative area of the school as well as teaching French. Both tasks she handles with her characteristic perfection. And she sure is a nice woman! Brother John Perry Who doesn ' t love Br. John? Br John is grea because he really listens to what we have t say. He tries to see every student at St. John ' s too, to make sure there ' s nothing bugging us Well, Brother, there is one thing: Do I have ti take classes between my study halls? Sister Alard Zimmer S. Alard comes to us by way of the College of St. Benedict, where she is a Math professor. On sabbatical this year. Sister is not only in- terested in seeing Europe, but also in helping elementary and high school students with their Math. During the course of the year, she ' s successfully charmed her way into the hearts of St. John ' s students and faculty alike — even if her favorite food is liver! Miss Lmda Hahus Research is a lot more inviting an activity with Miss Hahus down in the library. Her warmth and helpfulness has certainly given us the incentive to frequent the library. We ' d have more incentive still if she ' d write all those papers for us! Miss Lois Leonard Miss Leonard, the head of the Special Education department, services both the elementary and the high school. Consequent- ly, she and her bright smile dash back and forth between classrooms all day. It isn ' t easy to keep up with Miss Leonard! Mrs. Sharon Kennedy Mrs. Kennedy teaches eighth grade English and tutors students too. She can often be found in the halls, lugging the notebooks that she regrets she assigned her students to keep. By the way — her favorite food is Italian. Miss Susan Grant Miss Grant tutors elementary and high school students. Her genuine concern and pa- tience certainly has helped many students in many ways. Sister Ann McKenna Sister Ann also teaches both sections of the school. Her Religion classes are tough, but fun. But Sister Ann is probably more fun out- side of the classroom. Aside from being great to talk to, she ' s also an accomplished songleader at Mass. Miss Elizabeth Lawyer Miss Lawyer is the first alumna to teach at St. John ' s. A graduate from the class of 78, she teaches junior high art and tenth grade English. She tells us that she ' s sympathetic to our problems as students — then why does she give so much homework? Mr. Paul Stachowiak Mr. Stack, the self-appointed guardian of B-Level not only teaches Religion, but also organizes all our liturgies and is the father of twelve girls at the Girls ' Residence. He ' s a great guy, but he could really use a new joke book! Frau Irene Williams Our beloved Frau Williams, the gummie bear lady, expects more from her students than most people. One has to learn to sing in her class, and attend her spectacular Christmas party, and occasionally help her eat her favorite — meringue with strawberries and whipped cream. Somehow Frau manages to make every day special for everyone! Mme Marleen De Bauw Mme De Bauw, the keeper of the bookstore, is also the chairperson of the Language depart- ment. It ' s hard to believe that she ' s already spent twelve years at St. John ' s. But, the proof lies in the effective job teaching her students to speak French — mais oui! Mr. Eldon Kennedy When asked to name his favorite food, Mr. Kennedy told us, My enormous gluttony makes it impossible to choose just one. However if Mr. Kennedy ' s English, Creative Writing and Drama students were asked to name just one teacher, Mr. Kennedy would be chosen as the favorite, hands down. Mrs. Catherine Gist Mrs. Gist, the bright-eyed Math and Science teacher, also tutors students whose first language is not English. A veritable Renaissance woman, Mrs. Gist is great fun to talk to, off the record. A most enthusiastic staff member, Mrs. Gist cuts a popular figure around campus! :: ka I Mr. Jacques Van Heyningen k newcomer to the Science department, Mr. Van Heyningen teaches both the junior and the senior high. His students appreciate his patient, clear explanations in class — they sure help, since his tests are so rough! Mrs. Rita Greene Mrs Greene is the greatest What she ' s done for the St. John ' s hallways says plenty, but not enough. Mrs. Greene does something special for the kids in her classes too — she gives them confidence in an ability they perhaps never really knew they had. Miss Laura LaManlia Miss Lamantia ' s students, when they try to impress their Biology teacher, tend to bring her gifts like bread mold and plants, instead of apples. Miss Lamantia also really likes fish. It ' s great to have a teacher like Miss Lamantia — someone who is genuinely excited about the subject she teaches. Miss Paula Heinen Miss Heinen ' s students have always respected her, long before she became the single most powerful individual on St. John ' s campus. Miss Heinen controls the fates of countless computer buffs, as well as those who aspire to join the ranks of this class. Mrs. Pauline Wood Mrs. Wood, the Model U.N. moderator, helps her students by challenging them with lots of hard work. Some of her students have been known to discuss the issues raised in History classes, in other classes! Mrs. Wood must be a pretty smashing teacher! Mr. Dallas Jacobs Who ' s the guy with the guitar and calculator, eating eggplant parmesan? Why, it ' s Mr. Jacobs, the new Math teacher. Aside from his intense classes and incredible musical talent, Mr. Jacobs is also a friend to many, many students. Miss Christine Waggoner Miss Waggoner teaches Social Studies classes to the junior high. She has also done a phenomenal job as the junior high coor- dinator, organizing dances and trips. She also sponsors the Varsity and JV cheerleaders. Is there anything you can ' t do, Miss Waggoner? Brother Branan Gary After a year ' s sabbatical, Br. Branan ( Br, Boogie ) and his fish are back at St. John ' s. Welcome back. Brother! Everyone — not just the yearbook staff — is glad to have you back! Mrs. Carole Le Due Give Mrs. Le Due ninety-nine junior high students and she can do miracles. Once again she has shown her endless talents — and pa- tience — by taking charge of the junior high music classes and annual musical. The results are fantastic! Bravo, Mrs. Le Due! Mme Francoise Peres Mme Peres ' English is becoming as flawless as her students ' French! A full-time staff member this year, Mme Peres is making her mark Her characteristic dimpled smile enhances her plain niceness. Her students adore her. Mme Marie-Claire De Cock Mme De Cock the French teacher, doubles as Mme De Cock, the junior high Student Coun- cil advisor. Due to her enthusiastic leadership, the Student Council was led to great success, in terms of raising money for charity. We ' re so glad to have her on our side of the building, after her years of teaching in the elementary school. Miss Janet Williams The very relaxed, very very warm Miss Williams teaches Chemistry and chaperones lots of dances. We like to have her around because she really knows how the high school mind works: she ' s been known to give Slush Puppie breaks to overheated classes! Wr. Rome Campbell Coach Campbell has led our various sports earns to terrific success. Due to his organiza- ion and hard work, St. John ' s has produced earns that most of the other international or X)D schools fear, when it comes to athletics. Vfrs. Elizabeth Stephan An apple a day for Mrs. Stephan could help four grade, since she ' s partial to the fruit. Mrs. Stephan teaches English, and also provides :heatrical entertainment for the various liturgies. A talented actress herself, she also injoys reading poetry. Mrs. ludilh Debetencourl Mrs. Debetencourt has been around St. John ' s for so long, it ' s difficult to find something to say about her that ' s not boringly repetitive. Mrs. Debetencourt teaches English to 7th and 9th graders. They all love her, but that ' s not surprising — her students have loved her for years. Mrs. Sandy Zak Mrs. Zak has one of the most interesting classes at St. John ' s. (You can see she keeps a supply of Games magazine in her room for short periods.) If asked, she ' ll say she just loves St. John ' s. Hey Mrs. Zak — if you love St. John ' s so much, why did your kids graduate from ISB? Miss Linda Reinhart Miss Reinhart, or Dino, as her students af- fectionately call her for some reason, is a tough coach. She makes the girls run, in gym class and on the sports teams that she coaches. However, Miss Reinhart is lots of fun — even if she does make us take showers! Mme Colette Puvrez Mme Puvrez aime bien bien les cornichons. Elle aime aussi bien ses etudiants. And her etudiants love her too. pp. c BPH 1 1 K« r 1 ' 1 ;SEl HHL ' The Two Queens Mr. Kennedy does his Mr. Moran imitation This Superglue sure is great stuff! The students dress up in traditional American Indian garb (which Mr. Turner helps them create themselves), and take part in important rituals. One of these rituals is the passing of the peace pipe, instigated by Big Chief Wouters. Before the day is through, the little In- dians have all made peace with one another. The day itself, combined with all the preparation in Art class and elsewhere, makes the Pow-Wow a treat to which the children look forward, year after year. While most people are concerned about the effects of civilisation on the animals, birds and plantlife which share planet earth with us, it is a sadly human reaction to shrug and say what can I do ' ? ' The truth is t hat we can all help and a contribution, however small, to organizations like the World Wildlife Fund is one easy way. Many small contributions add up to the larger amounts needed by the WWF to study and protect the world ' s wildlife and to educate and motivate people to join the fight against extinction. This IS why ITT is supporting the admirable work of the World Wildlife Fund whose projects are by no means limited to more distant parts of the world.
