After two and a halfweeks of preparation. we opened under the lights at Marlboro on Sept. l4, 1982. Marlboro scored first at 14:37 ofthe first quar- ter. Sophomore Kevin Gillis tied the score at 3:47 ofthe second quarter. Gillis' goal was the beginning, There would be no looking back. St. John's soccer would be tops in Central Mass. In that Marlboro game, goalie Ken Nydam shut Marlboro out the rest ofthe way. St. John's had tied the number one team in Central Mass. ln regular season play, the varsity team com- piled a record of l2-3-2. All three losses were by only one goal each. The team captured the Central Mass. Championship. Junior Glenn Melia led all scores with 26 goals and 2 assists, while Senior Gary Henrich was second in team scoring with 4 goals and 8 assists. Though the team had a potent scoring attack. the defense was likewise outstanding. Ken Nydam C.9l goals against averagei backed up by Junior Mike Coombs 1.65 goals against averagel played goal. Fullbacks were Juniors Peter Mi- chelson and Russell Joralemon along with Freshman Chris Wydom. ln the District E play-offs, St. John's defeat- ed Doherty in the quarter-finals 3-2 as Glenn Melia scored with 68 seconds left in regulation action against Doherty High. to break the 2-2 tie. ln the semi-finals, SJ lost 3-2 to North High in sudden death overtime. As for post season honors, Glenn Melia was chosen to the C.M.C. All-Star team, the T 8: G All-Star team tCaptainJ, and the Mass. State All-Stars. Peter Michelson was chosen to the C.M.C. All-Stars, the T8cG All-Stars, and the Central Mass. Coaches' All-Stars. C.M.C. All- Stars also included: Richard Roncone. Russell Joralemon, Chris Wydom, and Kevin Gillis. The J.V. led by George Benoit L7 goals, 5 assistsj posted a l2-2-l record. The J.V. season was high-lighted by Mr. Brian Foley's 50th victory as J.V. coach, ysoccea 9 Sophomore Kevin Gillis in varsity
