I ' I Originally, the land upon which St. Iohn's is built was part of a large private estate: bordered to the east by Gage Lane, to the west by Old Mill Road, to the north by West Main, and to the south by Maple. Philip Washburn Moen was owner. Mr. Moen was retired president of Washburn and Moen Manufacturing Company flater to be the Steel 81 Wire Division of U.S. Steelj. In 1905 Mr. Moen commissioned the construction of a 30-room mansion. Until it was razed in the mid-1970's, the house was known to area residents as the Brewer Mansion. In 1912, Mr. Charles H. Hutchins purchased the house and property. Mr. Hutchins tof Knolls Loomworks, St. Iohn's Manor Worcesterl had three children. He commissioned architects to build a private residence for each. The Worcester firm of L.W. Briggs built our present day manor house for Mr. Hutchins' bachelor son Arthur in 1914. After Arthur moved to California, the house and lands given to him were purchased by Doctor Cleveland. In 1941, the Doctor's widow, Gertrude, sold the property to Mr. Clifford B. Sweet, vice-president of Brewer 8: Company, a pharmaceutical firm. Mr. Sweet named his estate Dunmorlan. He and his family resided here for 14 years. During the Worcester tornado in 1953, the house sustained minor damage: tiling on the roof was torn off and the stone chimney above the front bedroom was knocked to the ground. In 1955, the Xaverian Brothers purchased Dunmorlan while a suitable location for an expanded St. Iohn's was found. fOriginal plans did not call for the construction of a school building on the Shrewsbury propertyj In 1959, the ground was broken for the high school building. Later, Pioneer Field was acquired at the bottom of Main Street Hill. These 44 acres fonce part of the Moen, then Hutchins, then Brewer Estatel had originally served as a hay field, and then had been leased as a golf driving range. fResearch by Brother Thomas Ryan, C.F.X.j ,QQ ! Built in the late 1960's, the building is named in honor of Brother Flavian fFeb. 22, 1886 to Au- gust 4, 19741 who was a read- ing tutor and typing teacher at St. Iohn's from 1962 until his death. Brother Flavian was quite the personality. He was known for breaking up rocks and depos- iting them in the woods in his task of never tiring groundskeeper, even at the age of seventy. At his death, Brother Flavian was the senior Xaverian Brother in America, and, so, St. Iohn's has honored him by creating Flavian Hall. Flavian Hall has provided ex- tra room for classes, but it has become more than just extra Flavian Hall space. It has grown into a building with a personality all its own. The classrooms of Flavian are vertical rather than horizontal. In addition to classes, the Drama club makes use of Flavian's Little Theatre, which is also used for the showing of movies. Flavian has special significance to St. Iohn's. Uonathan Phelps '81j . s 5 M .Y i 2 if YT , i sa- g A .E 553' 3 ' 4 i if 55' . F '-'. -W 1 E: - .5 1 -W Y 15 1, - - H im...-f ? Coach Brother Raymond Hoyt pegged this advancement on the dedication of the runners. To be a good runner, the athlete must begin practice during the summer and work hard to better his times by running long distances. Running long distances on courses that range from 2.1 to 3 miles in the best time possible is the basis of Cross Country. There were times when the team flourished: as in its one point victory over Wachusett. But the sport is a strange one in which the situation changes as readily as the terrain: such was the case in the team's narrow defeat by the Red Raiders of Fitchburg. On the Varsity level, Senior captain Mike Curran established a team record of 15:04 for the 2.8 mile SI course f the overall record of 14:55 for the SI course is held by Richard Garven of Nashobaj. Mike also led SI runners at the Wachusett Invitational 113th placej and the Knights of Columbus Road Race f11thj. Iunior Cary Beisaw led the team at the District III finals, placed 16 in the K. of C. race, and 11th at the C.M.C. Championship Meet. C.M.C. In 1839 he established a group to do missionary work. By 1854, the group had grown and Bishop Spalding of Louisville, Kentucky, asked Ryken to send Brothers from Belgium to the United States to teach. Thus, in 1854, the Xaverian Brothers formally arrived in the United States, and, in the process attained the distinction of becoming the first religious order founded to send missionaries to America as its primary purpose. Six Brothers arrived in Louisville in 1854. In 1979 the community of St. Iohn's joined with the twenty-seven Xaverian Brothers at St. Iohn's to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Brothers' arrival in America. These lines, spoken by Bro. Orchid indicated the simple but insightful nature of our main character. Little Iohn Sarto - Brother Orchid is a man who has not known the presence of other people in his life. The kindness he finds with the Little Brothers introduces him to a more simplistic way of life he has not known in the underworld Although the plot is not a complicated one, Brother Orchid does leave us an important message. The old cliche says that it is the simple things in life that count. Perhaps, if we, too, were to pause and reflect upon our real joys, they would be found not in the tangible realities of our world, but in the kindnesses we extend to one another. - from The Director's Message by Mr. Don Nicole Right: Frontfl-rj: Peter Montgomery, Mark Nessing Ted Doyle, Back: Michael Colosi and David McNamara 52 vw wwf Seotedflrj Michael Colos1fBro Geraniumj Peter Standing Tom MahonfFrecklesj Bob Pep1fSolomonj MontgomeryfBro Nasturtiumj Mark Ness1ngfAbbot lim Pol1tofFat Dutchyj David McNamarafL1ttle Iohn Ionquilj and Ted DoylefBro Hollyhockj Sartoj Ioe PalermoU3omon1c Battistaj and Bob Tromb1fThe Grmpj basketball Success varied greatly for the 1979-1980 Pioneer basketball teams. Mr. Paul Phillips' I.V. team had its ups and downs but managed to end its season with a winning 11-9 record after a strong start and strong iinishg it was the middle of the season where defeats were encountered. On the varsity side of the locker room, there was disappointment early in the season. The team lost to strong Holy Name, North, St. Peter- Marian teams, as well as two losses in the Nashua Tournament. However, the team constantly improved and ended the season with an 11-11 record: the team placed third in the Central Mass Conference with a 10-4 league record. O F-4 P OI' 1 SGI1 On the eve of April 11, the Senior Class held its annual prom at the Sheraton-Sturbridge. The prom in the eyes of those who attended was deemed an ultimate success. After many months of hard work, it seemed unbelievable that the night had come. The prom began at 7:30 with the traditional receiving line. Later, the band, Image, started to perform. The main course was Prime Rib. As the evening progressed, the atmosphere began to relax and many of the seniors came to realize that this would be their last social function together. This year's prom was dedicated to Mr. Charles Bibaud whose efforts helped many through the last four years. One can say on April 11, the class of 1980 truly went out in style. - Dan Dillon '80. Ioseph Paul Zawalich 23 Windham St. Worcester, 01610 Bentley College 159 Tonight, I want to repeat what I keep telling youthg You are the future of the world, and 'The day of tomorrow be- longs to you.' The message of love that Christ brought is always important, always relevent. It is not difficult to see how today's world, despite its beauty and grandeur, despite the conquests of technology, despite the refined and abundant material goods that it offers, is yearning for more truth, for more love, for more happiness. And all of this is found in Christ and in his way of life. Whatever you make of your life . . . let it be something that reflects the love of Christ. The whole people of God will be all the richer because of the diversity of your commitments. And whatever you do, remember that Christ, is calling you, in one way or another, to the service of love: the love of God and of your neighbor.
