I ask of You, dear Jesus, to help me to put away all my childish whims and desires and to grasp that which is expected of me as a young man, Take my hand and lead me across the stepping stones that lead from childhood to manhood. Help me to take each step with an awareness of Your love for me. Should I let my weakness overpower me, dear Jesus, and I fall, give me the courage to start again as You did three times on the way to Calvary. Let me always make headway and never let me look back or try to take the easy way out when temptations of youth befall me. May Your Divine Way of the Cross be a constant reminder for me as Imeet the many obstacles a youth must encounter in becoming a God- loving man. Then, dear Jesus, when I have successfully completed the long journey from childhood to manhood may I be able to look back and see my youth as something pure - the pure memory of Your ever-loving protection of me. Under the careful guidance of Sister Mary Damien, we eagerly anticipated an exciting and memorable year, As the days and weeks slipped by, we plunged into our studies which included some new and baffling subjects. Re- citing French verbs, solving for 'x' and mastering the tech- niques of English III presented a struggle, Reminiscing over the past year's activities, we recall appearing on Teen Bandstand, attending the Senior ring ceremony and the Fantasia prom in late December, So- cially tne Juniors were at their best, actively supporting dances, roller skating parties and basketball, All too soon the year has passed and we are faced with the responsibility of following in the footsteps of the 'Class of 58'. Erie Street bordered with autumn leaves is a very pleasant sight. Even dating may involve teamwork. Senior, Joe Kondracki helps Junior, Steve Jones solve the girl problem, A pleasant lunch period passes as the Juniors tell the jokes of the day. As the hi-fi plays the strains of The King and I Frances Adams and Mary Doloway listen appre- ciatively. u Saphvmore 611155 flisiory Each September, fresh from the ranks of the peagreen Freshmen the wise old Sophs determine to leave their indelible mark on St. Iohn's. As we relive the year's experiences, we fondly recall struggling through THE HISTORY OF CIVILIZATION, espe- cially that extra sixth period each week and then diligently trying to decipher Veni, vidi, vici for Sister Mary Chabanel As to our math course, all the Sophomores agreed, it was fun drawing those squares, triangles and circles in geometry class. On the extracurricular side, we proudly note that we attended St. John's first prom, decorated for the Pow-Wow dance and provided the school with vivacious cheerleaders and active basketball players. JOE MILLS, President As we eagerly anticipate graduating to the rank of SHARON BUTTS, Vice President Juniors, we wistfully say good-bye to Sister Mary Vincent and thank her for helping us imprint our mark as Sophomores at St, John's. FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY A cool crisp September morning arrived and the Fall semester brought new and unfamiliar faces to the halls of St, John's. There, we were the incoming Freshmen--very unsure and just a little bit scared. The first obstacle we had to hurdle was the new subject Latin! Science and algebra also presented a challenge. However, we proved that we had mastered them at the Awards Assemblies. Throughout the year we demonstrated our newly acquired school spirit. The Freshmen were always in evidence at the school outings and at all social gatherings. Moving -up day finally arrived and we, the Freshmen, had completed our first year. No longer were we the pea-green Fresh, for now were ready to leave the ever watchful eye of PAUL NIGRA, President Sister Mary Chabanel and become wise old Sophs. THERESA KORBELAK, Vice President The Tuesday in Mardi Gras finds Eileen Lewis having difficulty in selecting the last bar of sweets until after the Lenten season. These freshmen, Donna Black and Susan Lally are talking about breaking a hundred at the Bowl o Fun while Martin Hagen, Paul Nigra, and William Huestis seem less confident. The map of the heavens helps the freshmen to identify the stars projected by the Planetarium. Sister Mary Vincent seems pleased at the interest exhibited by her general science students. flf' E A F' iii' Q .,p,,Qm,,nw vm. .. -1 W-111, M 1 Zz . . It -u., fr ,V ,. ,rv My . - w - fish. RETREAT December 5, 1957 found the students of St. Iohn's beginning their annual retreat, Meditative reading, rosaries, appropriate sermons and Holy Mass constituted the rule for three prayerful days. Mary's mantle hovered over all as a protective canopy. Rapt attention characterized our retreatants and thus inspiration was gained at all the conferences. Our corridors echoed with silent hushed footsteps these days. The spiritual benefits derived, we hope, will be reflected in our future lives. Cries of A strike! are often heard when St. Johns invades the Bowl o' Fun alley each Monday afternoon. This activity is enthusiastically supported by even the gutter ball throwers and there are strong feel- ings of competition as each team grimly decides to show up their opponents. To get off to a good start Regina Joyce, Ann Williams, Tom O'Brien and Joe Kondracki pick up their shoes, score sheets and a few pointers from the manager. Pep, vim and vitality are synonymous with our J. V. cheerleaders who include E. Dolan, C. Terricino, K. Edwards, P, Patti, I. Malano, L, Boyle, K. Deihl and M. Cunningham. To be found there were the beaming teens who shared enthusiasm and even cokes during the evening intermissions. Round and round rhey'd go and as the evening gave way, they knew that more pleasant memories of months of growing at St. John's had been tucked away. FANTASIA Our first annual prom was conducted at St. John on December 27. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors all did their share decorating the gym which was miraculously transformed into a ballroom. Girls in their lovely formals and boys in their best suits danced starry-eyed to the music of the Joe Watkins Orchestra. The evening was climaxed with the crowning of Carol Coppers and Mike Dineen as Queen and King of Fantasia. The court consisted of Margaret Medulan and Dick McCormick. THE PERFECT NIGHT SAINT JOHN'S AUDITORIUM DECEMBER 27, I957 T T The Student Council, John Galvin and Regina Joyce, with the crown bearers, James Joyce and Kim Osbom, advance toward the thrones.
