St. Johns High School annually celebrates Homecoming with a full week of activities, including exciting Hdress-upy' days, lunch hour competitions, a bonhre, a Homecoming Day Parade, a game, and a dance. Monday of this year 's Spirit Week was designated as Backwards Day , lpeople who usually wear their clothes inside-out looked normal!! and the Freshmen won the 'Bub- ble Gum-Pie Eating Contestl' that afternoon. Tuesday was Switch Clothes Day, and boys could dress up as girls and vice-versa. lBrian Winters and Tom Primrose were excep- tional-looking young ladies!! Seniors defeated the lower classes in the noon 'tMarshmallow Contest . Wild Hair and Makeup was the theme for Wednesday and numerous students shokingly displayed their outrageous attire. The Seniors once again won the competition at lunch, which was 'AHug and Pop . lThis event allowed students to hug one another in order to pop a balloon between them! Wonder what Mr. Udall thought of all that undue familiarity?.U Wednesday night ended with a traditional bonhre and spirit rally. Thursday many Redskins were seen to be wearing the opposition 's colors on Purple and Gold Day. The 1'Ska- teboard Relay at noon was won by the Juniors. True blue Redskins celebrated the big day Friday by wearing their own colors of red and white. Friday morning opened with the judging of Homecoming posters and the classes' individual hall decorations. Juniors were tops on their posters, followed by the sophmores, Freshman, and Seniors. Hrst on the halls was taken by the Seniors, second by the Juniors, third by the Freshman, and fourth by the Sophmores, At the parade later that after- noon floats were judged with Sophmores first, the Juniors, Seniors, and Freshman following. The long-awaited game commenced Friday night with roy- alty chosen at half-time. Paul Acosta was chosen as King and Sarah Anaya as Queen. Prince was Mike Gray and Princess, Loretta Jackson, Ginni Neagle and Todd Gillespie were named tirst attendants and Misty Mineer and Kevin Crosby second attendants, The game ended with a score of 34 to 19 in favor of Blue Ridge. Q , S The Honor level students C this year were Hyrum h Lunt, Kathy Carney and Ashley Hall. These stu- 0 dents have grade point I averages of 3. 75 or above a on a 4. 0 scale. These three students brought home a S total of 15 individual med- t als from Regional and i Slate competitions. C The Scholastic level stu- dents did an outstanding job this year. These were students with a grade point average between 3.00 and 3. 74. Joane Garren, Jean- 42 They had done it before. . . ette Broadbent and Brian Acoslernic Daccrihcllon Team 'I V a r s i t .V Shideler won a combined total of 8 medals in both competitions. Christy Tenney, Mark Brown and Angie Clark were this year's Varsity level competitors. These students have grade point averages below 3.00, but certainly do not lack in brainpower. ln fact, Varsi- ty competor Mark Brown had the highest Super Quiz point total in the region. These three individuals brought back to St. Johns Hve medals. L A Very Successful Year The SJHS Academic Decathlon team won tirst place in the North Region competition by scoring nearly 3,000 points higher than any of the other 22 teams from Coconino, Mohave, Yavapai, Navajo, and Apache Counties which competed in the Aca- demic Decathlon on Feb. 6. Students are divided into three categories, Honors, Scholastic, and Varsity. The team consists of nine members, two competi- tors and one alternate at each level. Each category takes exams in math, science, economics, lan- guage and literature, and the his- tory and arts of the age of En- lightenment and the Romantic Period. They also had to write an essay, give a formal and im- promptu speech and participate in an interview. The final event of the day was the Super Quiz in which the en- tire team had to answer ques- tions on the history of flight. The SJ team won Hrst place in that event. Each member of the SJ team was awarded a 5300 scholarship and each alternate 3150. Also, scholarships of S50 were given for each gold medal. SJHS did very well indeed. Among the top four point earner at the competition, SJ students held every position except third. Also, in the Hne Arts and Social SciencefHistory categories, the team won six of the nine medals available, a truly great feat. An- other amazing fact is that the SJ team won at least one medal in 9 of the 10 events, the essay being the only event in which SJ failed to secure a medal. As mentioned above, The SJHS team excelled in the Hne Arts category. ln fact, all of the 1 st and 2nd place med- als were won by students from SJHS. The team members were ner- vous and anxious the morning of Feb 6. There was also a lot of cramming on the way to Round Valley. One of the members re- marked that he would be glad when the day was over. Several others echoed the sentiment. However, by lunchtime Mark was saying that the competition was great. By the end of the day, he was about the most tired up member of the team. Mark has vowed to come back and help the team to victory next year. I love it, are his words. On March 8th, the team headed to ASU for state competition. When the day was through, the team had gained 4 more individ- ual awards for a total of 28. Be- cause of a difference in the meth- od of computing grade point averages, one of the team 's lead- ing point earners, Joane Garren, was unable to compete as a team member at State. Brian Shideler is to be commended for his hne showing on such short notice. Going into state competition, SJHS was ranked 8th in the state by virtue of our score at region- als. However, we Hnished 15th at state, but were well pleased with our performance. The enthusiasm shown by Mark Brown is what keeps Academic Decathlon coach Risa Udall go- ing. The Redskin Smokesignal of March 28, 1988 quotes her as saying, The reason l have be- come so . . . committed to the Academic Decathlon is that 1 have seen my team members 'fall in love' with the idea of learning. A special thank you goes to Mrs. Risa Udall from her team members for the hours she spent researching, reading and studying in order to help them understand the material they were studying better. 1987 was the Hrst year that the SJHS Academic Decathlon team won Ist place in the Region I competition. This year the team repeated and superseded that accomplishment. ln fact, the team won over S3300 in scholar- ships because of their great work. If they can win next year, for the third year in a row, the traveling trophy will ha ve a per- manent home in St. Johns High School. Mth high hopes, we wish next year's team the very best of luck for success. Go Get 'Em!!! by Hyrum D. Lunt Team Members Excell noted. The event is listed Hrst and then the place won. Twelve SJHS students attend ASU 's Engineering QQ Design Competition Pcuriicipcurris give best aiforis Students from all over the state compete each year in ASU's Engineering and Design Competition. The competition was held April 16 this year on ASU's campus in Tempe. l-Hgh school students are divid- ed into two categories, AAA schools and non- AAA schools. St. Johns competed in the non-AAA category. Students enter original en- gineering designs for con- sideration and take tests in Biology, Chemistry, Phys- ics and Math. Each student is allowed to enter one original design and f or take a test in one of the above areas. Three St. Johns students took first places at the competition. Kevin Crosby received a hrst for his original design of a hand- powered winch. Hyrum Lunt took Hrst in the Alge- bra ll test and Justin Platt came out on top in the Chemistry test. Jason DeLuisa placed sec- ond in the Biology test. Ashley Hall received a sec- ond in the Algebra ll test and Mindy Udall walked away with a third place win in the Biology test. Other students attending the competition were Mike Bell, Robert Waite, Debbie Porter, Phyllis McClure and Julie Davis. Kelli James entered a design but was unable to attend the competition. Ashley Hall and Kevin Crosby made a valiant effort to remain afloat for 15 minutes. We played a lot of good games, but came up a little short in the end. lfWth only eight seniors leaving the team, next year 's team should be a contender. If everybody that had played in the past few years would have come out we may have been in better standings. Ifwth three state play-off teams in our district, you can see how tough it was for our small team. We went to the state tournaments. We started with four wins and no losses. During our Hfth game, we ran into the Window Rock Scouts. We just couldn't hit anything that night. Then we went to Globe for the Globe Christmas Basketball Tournaments. We took fourth place. We lost to Miami and then came back to beat Payson and Hayden. After we got back from the holidays, we played Snowflake for our first conference game. We lost to them. After that, we went on a nine game winning streak. We blew everybody away, We even beat Winslow on their home court! They had never lost there in three years. The score was 76 to 61. We finished regular season play tied for Hrst place with Winslow and Snowflake. Our record was ten wins and two losses. We then went to Window Rock for the Conference Tournament as seeded number two behind Snowflake and ahead of Winslow. The reason Snowflake went as number one seed is because they beat us and Winslow during the regular season. We went as number two because we beat Winslow. We got a bye in the hrst round and we beat Show Low in the second round. We then lost to Winslow in the semifinals, by a score of 71 to 63, Then we beat Monument Valley for third place and a trip to the state playoffs. lt was an important game because the loser was out for the year. At the state playoffs down in Phoenix, we played the Buckeye Hawks in the first round. Unfortunately, we lost. Buckeye went on to win the state title by beating us, killing Snowflake, and destroying Winslow. We were the only team that was beating Buckeye throughout the playoffs. Over-all we had a good season. We are proud of what we accomplished even though we failed to win the state championship. That was our biggest goal. Probably the highlights of the year were: Ryan Mangum dunking the basketball in a game at the state tournaments and Steve Kinlichee getting into a Hght against a Show Low player during a game in the regular season. by Stevenson Kinlichee 66 ls it a bird or is it a plane? Kim Pirtle receives the Rotary Scholarship The i-lisiory oi The Class oi 'F 8' The class of 1988 began long and torturous journey towards graduation August 24, 1976. Things looked good then. We had no idea that someday we would be taking classes from Carl Ollerton. ln kindergarten we were safe within the confines of Mrs. Herring's classroom, heavily engrossed in the idea of napping on command and mixing colors of Hnger paint. First grade was remarkably different, we were suddenly presented with the idea of addition and subtraction lskills which Mr. Ollerton claims we still haven 't masteredj. John Postert, Mr, Misogyny 1988 , started a long running personal tradition that year. He cried when his mom brought him to school on the hrst day. He 's been doing it ever since. Second and third grade presented us with new adventures, like learning the fundamentals of grade begging la skill presently mastered by Ashley Halll. The fourth grade signaled a dramatic change in male-female relations. l think it was the first time that we noticed there was a difference between the two. This incredible boyfriend-girlfriend thing was suddenly pushed upon us when Loretta Jackson and Kevin Crosby held hands during the documentary Animals of Africa . The teacher, Mrs. Anderson, was totally unaware because they covered themselves with a coat. This deceptive camouflage worked well, all the way until the eighth grade. Sports became really important in the Hfth grade. lt is too bad we didn 't have a boxing team. If we had, the famous Mark Sherwood - Ryan Mangum fight would have been for the championship. The sixth grade was so uncontrollable that the administration was forced to split us into two groups during the seventh grade. Half of us were in the Pioneer school and the other half in the junior high. This only inflamed our competitive nature and the rivalry between the two groups became intense. In the eighth grade our athletic prowess was demonstrated as the eighth grade team won the district tournament. In case you are wondering it was the girl 's, not the boy's team that won. The eighth grade graduation ceremony only conhrmed that we were on top of the world. Our confidence remained unabated until we entered the hallowed halls of St. Johns High School. Our freshman year caused many long lasting friendships to dissolve. We no longer had the security of going through all seven classes in a group, and your best friend was whoever you shared the most classes with. That same year we saw the entering of the very shy and quiet Jeff Carpenter. Teachers are still wondering when he will come out of his shell. When our sophomore year rolled around, so did the age of sixteen. Parents of the girls were terrihed as the boys earned their drivers licenses and the right to take the family car out on dates. This fear was accentuated when Todd Gillespie and his green truck moved to St. Johns. The theme of our junior prom lived up to its name, Take My Breath Away. We spent a lot of time, work and energy trying to complete the decorating. As juniors we were proud of our record in the class competition. No one since has been able to match our achievements in this area. And Hnally the year we 've all been waiting for. As seniors we accomplished many things. Our boys went to State in basketball, the golf team won districts, and the academic decathalon team won the regionals. We also managed to get our political journal s in on time, well, most of us that is. On our senior trip to San Diego we experienced many adventures. One of those being that Ginni's roommates found out what she really looks like without all the hairspra y and make-up. We believe that we had the best time of any senior class yet! And at long last we stand here before you in all our splendor, anxious as heck to get done with this and into the real world. lt has been written that those who are the youth hold the future, so we, the senior class of 1988, lea ve to determine the future.
