After dropping their first two contests, the J.V.'s rebounded with two victories and three ties in their last five games. This year's Freshman team, under coach Charles Lenhart, concluded their season with a l-5-1 mark. This record, however, does not reflect the vast improve- ment shown by the frosh in the last half of the season, when they displayed excellent potential. T A T FRESHMAN FOOTBALL N Sept. Beset by a never-ending string of injuries, sickness, and tough breaks, the cagers did not win a game during the regu- lar campaign. The Titans were seldom beaten badly, however, and with a little luck they easily could have won ten games. Through all this adversity the team kept plugging away, and the student body kept supporting them. Eventually this paid off. In their opening tournament contest the winless Titans met Maumee, which had a 14-3 record and was top-seeded in the sectional. The resulting 48-44 upset victory by St. John's touched off a wild, on-court celebration at the final buzzer. It mat- tered little that the season abruptly ended the following night with a last-second loss to Central, for the Mau- mee triumph had gone a long way toward erasing the frustration of a very trying year. Peters Frosh, unior Varsit P1leU Victories This year's junior Varsity basketball team adapted very well to new coach Mr. james Corrigan and posted a highly successful season. Thanks to four consecutive one-sided victories at the end of the campaign, the j.V.'s finished with nine wins and only six defeats. Following an early loss to Central, the 1968-69 freshman roundballers came alive and compiled an impressive nine-game winning streak. Highlighted by nine City League triumphs, Coach Dennis Hodak's frosh cagers closed their season with an excellent record of 11-4. The members of both the junior Varsity and Freshman teams now have the challenge to develop the potential they showed this year. Future success will depend on them. againxt Scott. vi. l .., - l : rg, 1 V ,ff E -h .. L U ual 1. itil, lt Ita., lt I l The 1968-69 varsity wrestling team exhibited great skill and composure throughout their first season of competition on the state level. In dual-meet action the wrestlers posted a disappointing 4-4 record. Their setbacks included defeats by narrow margins, and they wrestled much better than the record indicates. The Titans, however, fared much better in tournament action. At both the Catholic Invitational Tournament CCITD and the City League Tournament, the grapplers finished in the first division. Later the team demon- strated great balance with a third-place finish in the sectional tournament at which six St. .Iohnls wrestlers advanced to the district, meet. In their final appearance of the season, the wrestlers captured twelfth place among the sixty-five teams in the northwest Ohio dis- trict. The team's outstanding performers were CIT champ Ed Floyd Q20-4D, Ray Zammit C12-4-lb, and -lim Bracken C16-8-1 Q. This big win provided the momentum that carried the squad to a very successful 7-1 season record. In some of their more impressive victories, the JV's overcame formidable foes from Cardinal Stritch and Macomber High Schools. During these hotly contested battles, such stalwarts as Tom Heilman, Jim Hawes, andllim O'Donnell provided the margin of victory. That several JV's made varsity appearances attests to the caliber of their wrestling. Undoubtedly many of these grapplers will appear as regulars on next ear's varsit roster. The high point of the season was the third meet, when the Titans trounced DeVi1biss by a 58-37 margin. In their final three encoun- ters, coach Norman Napieris swimmers lost to Findlay, Whitmer, and Fremont Ross, thus concluding the regular season with a disap- pointing l-5 record. The toughest defeat of all, however, came at the hands of Whitmer. The meet ended in a 43-43 tie, and Whitmer won the ensuing swim- off to deal the Titans a heartbreaking one point setback. In post-season activity the swimmers cap- tured sixth place in the twelve-team Port Clin- ton Relays, and also participated in the district tournament. .x- A T in . - - .',- v--1+ , ,L,, ,, -. g.- I V ' X' Mt' i - . - xl-.1 wi. 7- . ti 1 U-t ,Q J' I2 its M., V , l X - '. f'--:5e,.,.s,5: 5, -- ls..-3 lf- vf TYR-.sf 25' '--,gt A, ,3 . .
