DEBATE AND SPEECH This year by competing in over fourteen tournaments, the Campion Hall debaters showed themselves as tough city-league com- petitors. The debate squad, under the direction of Fr. Henley, S. J., charged into the season with great determination. The junior debat- ers, relying on their previous experience, inaugurated a Campion Hall first by participating in cross-question debates where a team is allowed to directly quiz its opponents. The juniors climaxed their season with an impressive trophy-winning performance at Sylvania. The freshman-sophomore debaters also amply demon- strated their abilities, and eagerly await next year's challenge. The individual speech events, guided by Mr. Daniel Liber- bach, S. J., refined their old polish and developed their own indi- vidual styles as the season progressed. This division of Campion Hall hosted the St. John's Speech Tournament in late January tor over 250 participants from twenty different schools. Tom Colturi's rendition of Clarence Darrow's defence of Henry Sweet captured a second-place prize in oratorical declamation. Individual Events: standing, Mr. Daniel Liderbach, Dave Brigode. Jim Kistner, Tom Colturi. Sitting: Ralph Keefe Jim Gibson, George Conklin. W 9 I at I, ' Q
