After impressive freshman and J.V. seasons, the Titan footballers moved into the varsity ranks this year. August 18th signalled the start of practice under coaches John Braucher, Fred Beier. and John Smith. Three weeks of intensive drills paid off in an opening 24-12 victory over neighboring Maumee. The following week the team traveled to Orville, Ohio, where a first quarter T.D. by the Red Ryders inflicted the Titans with their first varsity loss. The young Titans bounced back to sting Taylor Center 12-6 on the Ram's own field. Un the road once again, a brilliant second half comeback fell short in a 22-16 loss to Tif- fin Calvert. Scott introduced the Titans to the tough City League by pre- senting them with a 35-0 trouncing. A top-rated Monroe Central Catho- lic team pounded the shrinking Titans 33-16. An extra week of practice didn't help the Titan cause as they met their fourth straight defeat 26-12 at the hands of the Springfield Blue Devils. A determined squad faced the Bowsher Rebels in the muddy season finale. In the third quarter, the Titan defense pushed the Rebels into the end-zone for a safety. But with only minutes to go in the game, a long pass sunk the Titans 8-2. Now the experienced team awaits next year, when the Titans will make their debut in the City League. Mike 0'Reilly l86l. After they had trimmed the squad down to a workable size, coaches Donald Yingling and John Gallgher, S.J. began the work of drilling their charges in the fundamentals of football. The freshmen learned well, for they opened their season with a 26-0 win over Stritch. But the next week, two passes bombed the Titan fledge- lings as their only loss ofthe season was inflicted by arch-rival St. Fran- cis, 12-0. Rebounding after this heartbreaking defeat, the promising Titans whalloped McTigue 22-6, rolled over Waite 30-6, and slipped past Macomber 8-6. After a frustrating 6-6 tie with Libbey, the Titans closed their season by crushing Start 20-0. The freshmen are now anxiously awaiting next year when they will compose the St. John's junior varsity team. If that is the case, the 1967-68 St. John's Varsity Basketball team must have learned a great lesson this season. Competing in the tough City League, the Titans compiled a mark of 1-10. The varsity's overall record was 4-11. These records do not appear very impressive, but it must he remembered that coach John Braucher had only sophomores and juniors with which to build the varsity team. The high point of the season came when St. Jnhn's defeated Woodward, 59-51. Other Titan triumphs were a 72-36 trnuncing of Maumee Valley Country Day School, a 59-29 rout of Evergreen, and a one-sided 72-44 win over Spencer Sharples. Even in their losses, the varsity was usually right in the contest until the very end, showing that they were capable of holding their own against almost every opponent. If the var- sity Titans make good use of the valuable experience they gained this year, St. John's will be a top City League basketball contender next season. i . 43 ui Kneeling: Dan Corbo, Jim Fosnaugh, Jim Davis, Gary Florian, Mike Helvey, Kevin Gill. After losing a tough game to Rogers, the J.V.s rebounded, clobbering Maumee Valley Country Day School 60-45 and beating Evergreen 58-46. After losing five straight midseason games, coach Joseph Czernicki's Titans bounced back to grab victories in three out of their last live games. These three wins were a 36-30 triumph over Macomber, a 42-39 squeaker over Bowsher, and a 60-20 romp over Spencer Sharples. Thus the J.V.s closed out their season with a respectable 6-9 record. 'i Competing in the City League, the St. John's Varsity Wrestling team posted a 6-4 dual-meet record for the 1967-68 season. Besides winning four league matches, the grapplers were also 2-1 in non-league competition. ln the first two meets of the season, against Woodward and Cardinal Strich, dramatic pins by heavyweight Ed Floyd provided the margin of victory. Un the road the following week, the Titan crew was edged by a tough Fremont St. Joe team. Against Rogers, the grapplers met with their first City League defeat. At Christmas time, the Titans made a re- spectable showing against some of the state's top competitors in the Catholic Invitational Tournament IC.I.T.l, which was co-hosted with St. Francis and held at St. John's. The wrestlers welcomed in the new year with a string of victories over Waite, Maumee Valley, Libbey, and Macomber, bringing their record to 6-2. In the waning weeks of the season, the Titans fell to both Start and St. Francis. In spite of these two late season losses, the grapplers posted a very successful season. Ed Floyd in control. S.J., had a highly successful and promising season. Undoubtedly. the high point of the year came in the third annual St. John's Invitational Freshmen Wrestling Tournament. ln compe- tition against freshmen from six other schools, Tom Walsh ll03l, Tom Bracken l112l, and Frank LaScola lHwtl captured lirst places. Second-place finishes went to Rick Sbrocchi l121l, John Pinkelman l133l, Jim Hawes ll45l, and Joe Heinlein ll75l. SWIM TEAM POSTS 9-l RECORD The Titan Swimming team, under the dedicated coaching of Fr. Jim Lotze, S.J., completed the season with an excellent 9-1 record. Though the Titans did now know what to expect at their first meet, they swamped Lincoln, Ypsilanti 68-37. At the second meet, a feeling of confidence resulted in a 71-34 Titan tidal wave over Monroe. In the next meet, the Titans trailed behind until the last event when a 400 meter-freestyle victory edged them ahead for a one point win over Whitmer. As the meets continued so did the Titan victories. Unly a defeat hy Findlay marred a perfect record. After the final meet, it was a happy team that baptized their victorious season by gleefully tossing Fr. Lotze in the drink. The spoils of victory-Father Lotze goes for a swim. The debate squad, under the direction of Fr. Henley, S. J., charged into the season with great determination. The junior debat- ers, relying on their previous experience, inaugurated a Campion Hall first by participating in cross-question debates where a team is allowed to directly quiz its opponents. The juniors climaxed their season with an impressive trophy-winning performance at Sylvania. The freshman-sophomore debaters also amply demon- strated their abilities, and eagerly await next year's challenge. The individual speech events, guided by Mr. Daniel Liber- bach, S. J., refined their old polish and developed their own indi- vidual styles as the season progressed. This division of Campion Hall hosted the St. John's Speech Tournament in late January tor over 250 participants from twenty different schools. Tom Colturi's rendition of Clarence Darrow's defence of Henry Sweet captured a second-place prize in oratorical declamation. Individual Events: standing, Mr. Daniel Liderbach, Dave Brigode.
