Our academic pursuits are an integral part of our life here at SJH. Academic progress is, after all, the reason that public schools were begun in the first place. We take a serious ap- proach to academics with each class lasting a minimum of 50 minutes a day and as few in- terruptions as possible. We also try to honor those students who excell academically. The Na- tional Honor Society is the pres- tigious organization which is de- voted to the development of character, leadership, scholar- ship, and service. The Valedic- torian and the Salutatorian of each graduating class have im- portant roles in the graduation ceremonies each spring. Each year in the spring a special ban- quet is held to recognize those students who have achieved ac- ademic honors throughout the school year. All in all, fac- ulty and students together work to make the St. John’s diploma a lot more valuable than a slip of paper. A diploma from St. John’s means academic achievement. Our academic pursuits are an integral part of life at SJH. 7

Transportation is a big issue at St. John’s High. The school officially be- gins as we enter, by what- ever means, the school parking lot and ends with our exit. Students walk, skate- board, ride bikes, ride with Mom, Dad or friends and, ultimately, drive to school. A space in the senior park- ing lot is a symbol to a student that she or he has finally arrived, has made it to that long-awaited, high- ly-coveted status as a se- nior. Other modes of transportation may pro- vide fun or exercise for that SJH’er on the go. In addition, what a stu- dent or faculty member drives says something about that individual ... You are what you drive. A SCHOOL BUS a really classy automobile so important as whether or can make you. It will de- not you’re on time, termine who will-or-won’t date a person. — At least for that important first date! But in the end, fancy car or walk- ing, skate- board or bike, how you get to school is not You are what you drive 9
