V The Blue Devil St. John’s High Darlington, S.C 1988 1 We laugh and we cry. We work and play and then we wail about the lack of time. We wish minutes and hours and even days and weeks away and then there are those moments that we wish could last forever. Time — Lots of time at St. John’s High. 1260 hours in a school year and then at least that much more time devoted to friends, and work and leisure and procras- tinating and gossip and good times and not so good times ... Time in class, time in the hallways, at break and after school — Precious times that we hope we will never forget. The Blue Devil staff has tried to freeze just a few of these moments in time, mo- ments which will, later on, make you smile and shake your head, or get a lump in your throat at the memory. We hope that the following pages will help you to remem- ber the 1987-88 school year more vividly ... to help you remember the school year when all was blue, white, and you! We laugh and we cry. We work and play. At SJH, school spirit is a reflection of the pride we feel for our athletic teams and for our school as a whole. Many opportunities are presented for students to show their support for the school, such as school-related clubs, pep rallies, and ath- letic events. Home- coming week is espe- cially Spirited each year. This year, as in the past, the student council permitted each student to par- ticipate each day in Spirit week. Mon- day was Twin day, Tues- day, Nerd day; Wednes- day, Drcssup day; Thursday, Celebrity day, and the week culminated in Fri- day’s, Blue and White Day. A home- coming parade fea- turing the home- coming contestants and floats painstak- ingly prepared by members of each class took place at the ball game on Oc- tober 23. The home- coming queen and football sweetheart were crowned dur- ing half time. The basketball team is supported by a special group of people known as the bleacher crea- tures who add spunk and spir- it. With such a fine ath- letic program and student body, it is no wonder that Spirit is so vital an element in life at SJH. Spirit is a vital part of Student life at SJH Our academic pursuits are an integral part of our life here at SJH. Academic progress is, after all, the reason that public schools were begun in the first place. We take a serious ap- proach to academics with each class lasting a minimum of 50 minutes a day and as few in- terruptions as possible. We also try to honor those students who excell academically. The Na- tional Honor Society is the pres- tigious organization which is de- voted to the development of character, leadership, scholar- ship, and service. The Valedic- torian and the Salutatorian of each graduating class have im- portant roles in the graduation ceremonies each spring. Each year in the spring a special ban- quet is held to recognize those students who have achieved ac- ademic honors throughout the school year. All in all, fac- ulty and students together work to make the St. John’s diploma a lot more valuable than a slip of paper. A diploma from St. John’s means academic achievement. Our academic pursuits are an integral part of life at SJH. 7 Transportation is a big issue at St. John’s High. The school officially be- gins as we enter, by what- ever means, the school parking lot and ends with our exit. Students walk, skate- board, ride bikes, ride with Mom, Dad or friends and, ultimately, drive to school. A space in the senior park- ing lot is a symbol to a student that she or he has finally arrived, has made it to that long-awaited, high- ly-coveted status as a se- nior. Other modes of transportation may pro- vide fun or exercise for that SJH’er on the go. In addition, what a stu- dent or faculty member drives says something about that individual ... You are what you drive. A SCHOOL BUS a really classy automobile so important as whether or can make you. It will de- not you’re on time, termine who will-or-won’t date a person. — At least for that important first date! But in the end, fancy car or walk- ing, skate- board or bike, how you get to school is not You are what you drive 9 Vi No matter how much wc may love school and the pursuit of learning, it's nice to hear that 3:00 hell ring. At last, our time is truly our own — time to study or gos- sip; time to practice for an extracur- ricular ac- tivity or to attend a club meet- ing. Time to turn the pages of a book we're reading for pleasure or to turn into a couch potato. The types of things a stu- dent may do with his or her spare time are as varied as arc the students themselves, limited only by lime, mon- ey, and imagination. IT’S NICE TO HEAR THAT 3:00 BELL RING! They are the faces that you see every day. You may love some and you may not be so fond of others. You may recognize some and others may be completely new to you. You encounter them when- ever you go to a school-related function. But they all have some- thing in common — no matter what the color, shape, size, or age, the quality of St. John’s would be di- minished by the loss of any individ- ual. They are the faces of St. John’s High, a whole which is equal to a lot more than the sum of its parts. They are blue and white faces — they are you! The quality of St. John’s would be diminished by the loss of any individual. Everything You Ever Wanted to Know ... He rolled up his shirt sleeves and worked tirelessly with us on our projects. His hard work and enthusiasm were contagious and we ourselves worked harder and were more en- thusiastic because of him. His determined efforts with the Jr. Sr. com- mittees last year made the 1987 prom the most memorable and special one in recent years. He has been our friend and our critic and because of him, we have accomplished much and will accomplish more. For these reasons, the class of 1988 is pleased and proud to dedicate the 1988 Blue Devil to Mr. Shay Rollings. TO N SPGON. PERSON 18 21 J. Alston — S. Among the many activities that we participated in were Magazine sales. Pep Rallies, Powder Puff, Spirit Link Competition, Homecoming Float Competition, and the Junior-Senior Prom. We were not the most successful class as far as winning such competitions but when it comes to the everyday things, the things that really matter we can honestly say that our class is an extremely spirited one. Perhaps not because we collected the most money, had the prettiest float, or made the most noise at a Pep Rally but because our High School Career has brought us many friends that we will always have and many wonderful experiences that will help shape our lives. We are quickly approaching our last year at SJH and this is a very exciting time for us. Every new year we attend St. John’s is better than the one before and next year will be great! We are eager once again to show our spirit for the last time and prove that the class of 89 is in a class by itself. JUNIORS Class of ’89 Juniors J. Adams-D. The Blue Devils played two state championship finalists, Hartsville and Marion, along with competing with the other members of Region 4AAA, the state’s toughest conference. Head- ing the Blue Devils on offense were (QB) Jimbo Langlewy, who passed for 680 yards. 319 of these yards went to junior split end Jeffrey Privelte, along with three TD tosses. Tony Bynum led the ground attack gaining 405 yards rushing. Defensively, the Devils were led by junior linebacker Richard Cas- sidy, who made 128 tackles. Paul Pappas led the secondary at Free-Safcty with 3 inter- ceptions and 4 fumble recoveries. Duane Avant recorded four quarterback sacks. Awards were given to several members of the squad at the fall sports banquet. They are as follows: J. E. The 87 edition of the Diamond Devils proved to be delight to baseball fans. Posting a 17-6 overall record and 16-4 conference record, gave the Blue Devils a conference championship and a berth in the state playoffs. The team played three games in district action before being eliminated from post season play. Early in the season the Blue Devils had inspiring victories over a strong South Flor- ence team and the defending conference champion, Camden, squad, but it wasn’t until the mid-season victory over the Hartsville Red Foxes that the team put it all together. The win over Hartsville gave the team great unity and togetherness which propelled them through the second half of the season. The team won their last eight games to capture the conference crown. The success of the team can be attributed to hardwork and dedication by all the players and coaches. Outstanding pitching and very deliberate defense coupled with efficient hit- ting was evident through the season. Nathan’s brain has just sprung an air leak! Being past victims of this, the EDITOR'S SYN- DROME, Jim and I arc trying to help our poor friend through this terrible ordeal. While Jim calls Mrs. Hayes to inform her of this tragedy, I think I'll inject 60cc’s of battery acid into Nate's head to calm him. There ... That ought to make him feel real good! Now that I’ve got a moment. I'd like to thank a few people that made this edition of The Blue Devil possible. First, I must thank the two knuckleheads in this ambulance. Nathan Carroll and Jim Sabinske have done tre- mendous jobs as Sports Editor and Club Organizations Editor. Also I send thanks to our Junior Editors: Dona Jo Ruthvcn, Lisa Gentry, Susan Middleton, and Susan Cross. I also thank the entire Blue Devil staff for working with the Editors under intense conditions. I also thank Mike Smith (a man you may not know). As our Taylor Pub- lishing Company representative he has made a vital contribution to the success of this annual. Also thanks are in order to the faculty, administration, and student body of SJH for the many contributions they have made. Thanks to all the businesses, industries, corporations and individuals who purchased ads which are so important in the production of a high quality annual. Jim and I would like to thank the Darlington County Emergency Medical Service for the transporting of a dear friend to the local Psychiatric Ward!! Thanks from the bottom of our hearts (and the emptiness of Nathan's head at the moment). The next person deserves her own paragraph. Very special thanks to a lady I call “Little G.” Our sponsor, Mrs. Gail Hayes, has worked extremely hard on this annual. But thanks to her goes further than this publication! Thanks for being a great friend the past three or four years. The three of us love you and will miss you! Good luck with DJ and The Crew next year!! Thanks to all. He served as an assistant to J. E. Welch for six years before gaining the head spot. During his years as head coach the Blue Devils have captured four conference championships and have had several players progress to college football.
