... ACADEMICS ... Academics play a very' important role in stu- dent life at S.J.H. The Academic Awards ceremony, which was held on May 25. 1986. honored the students that have excelled in Academics. The NHS is the organization that emphasizes scholastic achievement. .1 0EV1LS w «r St. John’s spirit shines throughout the year during all school activities. Each year the Annual Staff sponsors the Spirit Chain during the week of Homecoming. The class that wins gets a two-page spread in the annual. Student Council sponsors Spirit Week which features a different activity everyday. This year these activities included: Baby Day, Dress-up Day, Western Day, 50’s Day with Blue and White Day winding up the week. 5 6 St. John’s offers a wide variety of sports programs for both male and female students, fall, winter or spr- ing. In Fall, there are Girls' Tennis and Football. In Winter, there is Basketball for girls and boys. In Spr- ing. there arc a variety of sports in- cluding Golf, Boys' Tennis, Track, Baseball, and Softball. Whether par- ticipant or spectator, there is a sport for you somewhere. 7 8 ...CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS... ... SOCIALIZING Although academics come first, students always find lime to enjoy themselves. Mingling together at lunch, congregating in the lobby before school, simply catching up on the latest news between classes are just a few ways students find to socialize. 10 SENIOR SURVEY A survey of the Senior Class was taken in September and these were the results. TOM CRUISE was nominated as favorite actor with BILL COSBY coming in second. Many Seniors can be found on Thursday nights glued to the T.V. watching THE COSBY SHOW or KNOTS LANDING. While they watch the shows they eat PIZZA or STEAK. The favorite actresses were CYBIL SHEPPARD and NANCY McKEON. On the weekends you may find many Seniors CRUISING TOWN in their favorite car which is a BUICK REGAL or CORVETTE with their FRIENDS or MEMBERS OF THE OPPOSITE SEX. While in their cars they listen to RUN D.M.C. and BON JOVI. The Seniors will also be at their favorite hangouts which are MCDONALD’S and THE BARN. In their spare time they enjoy their favorite sports which are FOOTBALL and BASKET- BALL. After they have studied for their favorite sub- jects, MATHEMATICS and ENGLISH, they watch their favorite movies. TOP GUN and FRIDAY THE 13th VI. on the VCR. 12 She has watched us mature from frivolous Freshmen to sophisticated Seniors. She has taught us how to win with pride and to lose with dignity. She always saw the potential we had as a class as well as individually. She showed us how to do our best and to never give up no matter how bad things got. She has helped us each year in all class activities. She taught us how to be responsible and to do things for ourselves. She has been our greatest influence over the past four years at St. John's. She has always stuck by us through thick and thin and we always knew we could depend on her. For these reasons and many more, the Class of 1987 dedicates this annual to: MRS. LINDA BOSTON We appreciate all you’ve done for us. Ella Young Joey Grice Secretary T reasurer Life is a winding road that we all must take in order to encounter maturity. Mistakes are made, some remembered; others forgotten. Throughout our years at St. John’s we have been a unified class. When we entered as freshmen, we were scared and uneasy; we had taken a step higher to reach maturity. However, our uneasiness was shattered when we won several pep rallies and were named the Most Spirited Class of 1983-84. We placed second in the mural competition that year. We made a great first impression to the upperclassmen and intended for it to last forever. Our sophomore year we won the float competition. As Juniors, we won the float competition again with the theme “The Roof Is On Fire.” We won the Powder Puff game with a 6 to 2 victory over the Seniors. Then we were only months away from our first Junior-Senior Prom. As Seniors, we came back to St. John’s excited, happy and determined to make our last year the best. We were the leaders and intended to take control. At the first pep rally, we dominated with vivid cheers. In the Powder Puff game we upset the Juniors and became the first class in a long time to win two consecutive Powder Puff games. We have changed a lot since our freshman year. However, through it all we have remained a unified class. Now we await the future with sadness and anticipation. The stars go down To rise upon some other shore. And bright in heaven’s jewelled crown They shine forevermore. There is no death! The forest leaves Convert to life the viewless air; The rocks disorganize to feed The hungry moss they bear. There is no death! The dust we tread Shall change, beneath the summer showers. To golden grain, or mellowed fruit, Or rainbow-tinted flowers. There is no death! The leaves may fall. And flowers may fade and pass away — They only wait, through wintry hours, The warm, sweet breath of May. There is no death! The choicest gifts That heaven hath kindly lent to earth Are ever first to seek again The country of their birth. And all things that for growth or joy Are worthy of our love or care. Whose loss has left us desolate, Are safely garnered there. Though life become a desert waste. We know its fairest, sweetest flowers. Transplanted into Paradise, Adorn immortal bowers. The voice of birdlike melody That we have missed and mourned so long. Now mingles with the angel choir In everlasting song. There is no death! Although we grieve When beautiful, familiar forms That we have learned to love are torn From our embracing arms — Although with bowed and breaking heart, With sable garb and silent tread. We bear their senseless dust to rest. And say that they are “dead,” They are not dead! They have but passed Beyond the mists that blind us here Into the new and larger life Of that serener sphere. They have but dropped their robe of clay To put their shining raiment on; They have not wandered far away — They are not “lost” nor “gone.” Though disenthralled and glorified They still are here and love us yet; The dear ones they have left behind They never can forget. And sometimes, when our hearts grow faint Amid temptations fierce and deep. Or when the wildly raging waves Of grief or passion sweep, We feel upon our fevered brow Their gentle touch, their breath of balm; Their arms enfold us, and our hearts Grow comforted and calm. And ever near us, though unseen, The dear, immortal spirits tread — For all the boundless universe Is Life — there are no dead! I J. They planned to win the Homecoming float competition and to do better overall in all aspects of activities and academics. They accomplished all of these goals. The class seemed to be more united this year than ever before. Many class members participated in fundraising in many ways. The most successful of these was the car wash. They joined together in working on their “Danger Zone” float, while participating in Pep Rallies, and in all of the day-to-day aspects of student life. The Juniors and the Junior homeroom teachers also worked extremely hard at making this year’s Junior-Senior prom more successful and exciting than in previous years. For the class of 1988, there is only one more step, the one it’s been awaiting, the one it’s ready for! Their spirit was ignited for the first pep rally and they were ready to pursue a victorious year at SJH. Then, during Homecom- ing, they really worked hard with the theme “Feel The Heat” trying to build a unique float for the annual float competition. The Sophomore float itself was very unique, although it didn’t do as well as they had hoped it would. However, did this break the spirit of the Sophomores? NO! They emerged from this small setback with many bigger and better plans for their future success at St. John’s. You hold him. I’ll fold him! They were a huge class with burslful spirit at times. ISO IN CELEBRATION OF YOU! I have tried to imagine my world without you: Soaring geese in formation, mountain peaks hidden in snow. The splendor of fall along a country road, The whirr of a ring-necked pheasant at midday, The bleating of a horned owl at midnight, And know that none of it would be the same Without you. But most of all, I could never replace your smile, your eyes Your gentleness and giving, your loyalty and caring, The memories we’ve filed, the secrets we’ve shared. The love that is forever there despite time or distance. So, today I celebrate your very existence, Thank all of life for your life, Express my deepest gratitude that Of the millions of people and possibilities, Our lives were destined to be intermingled. And as I celebrate your being, I want you to know, clearly and forever, That my world would never be the same. Without you. As we approach the conclusion of our days at St. John’s, we realize that we have accumulated a wide collection of memories. Some are happy and some are not so happy, but all seem more and more precious as the year comes to an end. There’s not a day that has gone by this year that doesn’t have a special memory for someone at St. John’s. We hope that in putting together this book we have man- aged to capture just a little of what made this year special for you. We’d like to thank the following: Mike Smith, our Taylor Publishing Company Representative; Ms. Bailey; the Ad- ministration; the Darlington International Raceway; Ernie Buck, for the use of his go-kart; our 1986-87 Blue Devil Staff; and a special thanks to our advisor, Mrs. Hayes, for all of her support and guidance and to Damon Lambert, our Junior editor, for working so hard on the yearbook. We will cherish the memories of putting this yearbook together forever. We hope these pages will help you remember your year at St. John’s. — James Kavanaugh 181 A FAREWELL FROM THE CLASS OF 1987 Our childhood years are now a-fading Into the past where memories thrive. The joys and tears we shared together Will be our dreams by fireside. Throughout the years we will remember With glowing heart and misty eyes; Our minds drift back to years of laughter; We’ll think again and our hearts will sigh. We’ve learned to share in work and pleasure Toward the goals that drew us all. Our class came armed with strong ambition To challenge life’s unceasing call. Our undying spirit became tradition, Homecoming really drew a crowd. The Senior Prom brought lasting memories Of this our class we may be proud. Yes, we’ve come far from freshmen pleasures And we’ve made friends we’ll ne’er forget. We love this school and all its treasures, But we will leave with no regrets... 183 THESE MERCHANTS SUPPORT US. SADD slogan Dear students, Death due to drinking and driving is the No. 1 killer facing your generation. If we don’t attack this disease, it will spread. At St. John’s High we have begun the battle, but we need everyone’s help. Death has been camouflaged for you because of the lack of communication between you and your parents and because of peer pressure. Talk to your parents, your friends and “think before you drink!” Please don’t become a statistic; we care about you too much! SADD is making a difference because you are making a difference. Teen-age deaths due to drinking and driving have decreased in all 50 states, and since 1981 overall has decreased 38%. Please join us in our effort to end the still 7,000 senseless deaths of our brothers, sisters and friends. Sincerely, Karen Colvin Maricia Cooper SADD Sponsors Dear Students Friends, Every 23 minutes an innocent person is the victim of a drunk driver. SADD is helping, but we need your help too. Please help us and you — Don’t Drink and Drive! Sincerely, SAD(D) FACTS- Gretchen Eckhardt — SADD President — One half of all fatal accidents involve alcohol (about 26,000 each year) — Six out of 10 people who kill themselves in single vehicle accidents are drunk. — In the 16-24 year age group, alcohol is responsible for 7,000 deaths a year and the disfiguring of 40,000 young people. — Of 60 children bom today, 1 will die and 3 will be gravely injured in car accidents related to alcohol. — Someone is killed by a drunk driver every 23 minutes. — 90% arrested for drunk driving are men. 3 drinks (which is about 4' 2 oz. whiskey, or 9 oz. wine or 3 cans of beer) within one hour is about. 10%, which constitutes legal definition of “under the influence.” FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS DRIVE DRUNK -----------PLEASE BE A FRIEND! 207 oo o rsj CONGRATULATIONS GRADS Susan, We wanted to tell you how proud we are of you and how much we love you. It is our wish that you be happy in life and your dreams come true. Remember God cares for you and our prayers will always be with you. Congratulations! Love, Mom and Dad We love you, Mom, Dad, Jane Jimmy and Lynnette Marci, Congratulations! We are proud of you. You have reached the first big milestone in your life. Always have a dream and reach for the stars, but most of all, always be happy. 210 Page, It only seems like yesterday when you were that toddler, always at my feet. But as the years slipped away. I have realized that the little tod- dler, my baby, is now a young lady, who I am very proud of. My only wish is that you meet life straight for- ward and honestly, obtaining the goals that you have set for yourself. Always allow the Lord to be first in your life and you will be all you want to be. I Love You, Mama Judy, Words cannot express the love we feel for you or how proud you have made us with all your ac- complishments. You’re such a strong and dedicated person, and a very hard worker too. You’ve been such an inspiration to your fami- ly and friends in that you never accepted anything but the best for your life. Your goals were to always aim for perfection. Congratulations now and always thank God for little girls like you. We Love You, Daddy, Mama, and Terri 211 Ernie, You know we love you without being told. However, it is always nice to hear that you are loved and appreciated. We are proud of you more than you could ever know. May the future be everything you want it to be with God’s help. We do love you with all our heart. Congratulations on your graduation. With Lots of Love, Mama, Daddy and Yolanda Marc, You have brought so much joy, laughter, and happiness into our lives, and we are so proud that you are our son. As you tackle the cares and problems of the “real world” after graduation, may you not lose your optimism and your ever- present sense of humor. Our wish for you is that your life will be filled with happiness and that your accomplishments will bring you lasting satisfaction. Know that our love for you will go with you as you travel Life’s road and that you can always come to us to hear “welcome home!” Love, Mom and Dad When you say “class of’87” ... 214 Riff Raff You’ve said it all! A Fond Farewell From: qjlI As we sit here contemplating our future, we realize that graduation is the beginning of a journey which may separate us from some of you and draw us closer to others. The journey will be a long, and we hope, exciting one fraught with new experiences and new friend- ships. But, divided as we might be by physical distance, we will always be together in spirit. 215 Rhonda, The future is ahead, your childhood is past. Adventure, excitement, confusion, trouble, and happiness are ahead. You may stumble, slow down or even fall, but never stay down! Keep going, never give up on yourself or your fellowman, trust in your judgment and always look to God. I’ve trained you the best I know how. You’ll do just fine! Always remember dear, I love you.
