Sophocles During our four years at SJH she has taught us a lot. She has taught us how to laugh at ourselves, to appreciate the things around us, to stand up for what we believe in, and many other important things. Teaching us to believe in ourselves, but to never take life so seriously that we didn’t enjoy it, was something she impressed on us. We have laughed and cried with her. She has always been behind us, pushing us to do better and strive for the best we could do. We envy all of you in the future who will come in con- tact with her, and we feel sorry for those who may never get to know this very special lady. It takes a heap o’ livin’ in a house t’ make it home, A heap o’ sun an’ shadder, an’ ye sometimes have t’ roam, Afore ye really ’predate the things ye lef behind. An’ hunger fer ’em somehow, with ’em alius on yer mind. Edgar Albert Guest The class of 1986 will be leaving soon, and it probably has taken us four years to really appreciate this lady. And so, the CLASS OF 1986 dedicates this annual to MRS. JANE WALRATH You will always be in our hearts, no matter how far away we roam. 15 the rt'KmejKV trademarXs of Horn AhhotyLtd The Trivial nH suit Game, Genial Edition, is Copyright 1981 by Horn Abbot Ltd., all rights reserved. As Freshmen our class never united and our per- formance at Pep Rallies definitely showed this. Although we accom- plished little we knew it would get better. Our Sophomore year started rather slowly, but by Homecoming we had our act together and won the mural competition. We still had a long way to go but now we knew we could make it happen. As Juniors, we were excited and looking forward to many new experiences that lay ahead. We played our First powder-puff game and, although the Seniors won, we were still proud of ourselves for the good job we had done. We began magazine sales in order to raise money for Jr.-Sr. After returning from Christmas break, we were ready to conquer the world. It was time to get ready for the prom. Many hours were spent preparing food and decorating the gym. Finally, prom night arrived and, full of anticipation, we all got ready for the night of our lives. We left for summer break knowing that the best year was yet to come. The Seniors came back to SJH knowing that within nine months they would be independent people and “put on their on.” During our first weeks at SJH we didn't realize that we were the Seniors and no one was going to be able to tell us what to do. The first pep rally united us as a class and although we came in second we strived to do better. Also, the first month brought about the “Senior” things we had to do. Dur- ing September we voted on the Dedication for the an- nual and for Senior Superlatives. When October and November came we ordered our Senior pictures, Graduation announcements, and our Caps and Gowns. At the Homecoming pep rally our class came together as a whole and for the first time in our four years at SJH we won a pep rally. Although we came in last in the float competition, with the theme ‘We’re So Excited,” we had a good time building it. We have grown a lot since our Freshman year and we also have been through a lot. Changes have occur- red with every member of the Senior class and these changes have matured us and made us better people. During our last year at SJH fun times came and went; now we await Graduation and the Future with an- ticipation and a heavy heart. 18 Angela Andrews Marchcllc Andrews Ricky Andrews Stephen Andrews Keisha Baird Karen Bell Carrie Black Mickey Blackman Cindy Blackmon Rusty Blackmon Shelby Blackmon Sidney Blackmon Kim Blackwell James Bonaparte Michelle Bonaparte Mary Bonnoitt 19 Marty Boseman Ronald Boswell Harold Brasington Lynn Brown Gigi Bryant Tommy Bryant Tony Bull Ronald Burgess Dena Byrd Latanya Carolina David Cassidy Cardeli Cherry Melissa Coe Trudi Coker Shirley Cook Vernard Cosom Libby Covington John Cox Sheldon Daniels Rose Ellen Davis Mike DeFee Wanda Derry Charles Diaz Elizabeth Dickerson Charles Dickey Crystal Dolford Daniella Douglas Jesse Dudley Elizah Dundy Jamie Dunston Bryan Durant Cecil Dutton 21 22 Ladd Dutton Terri Duval Frank Pat Edwards Shelly Elms Andre Enoch Pamela Evans Tony Flowers Craig Foster Christopher Frank Randy Freeman Lisa Gainey Robbie Gainey Patrick Galloway Rosemary Gardner Billy Garland Michael Gastright Darin Gattison Irene Gattison Rosalind Gattison Michael Goodson Saundra Graham Sherry Grant Tammic Grant Felice Gray George Gray Ronald Gray Allison Greene Barbara Griffin John Griggs Jimmy Hall Karen Ham Samantha Hardee 23 24 Mimi Harrelson John Harrington Bemadine Harrison Tammie Harrison Eric Herring Missy Hinson Dan Hood Lisa Hough Valerie House William Howard Tammic Howie Sylvester Hudson Curtis Hunter Timothy Hunter Titus Hunter Delores Jackson Sylvia Jackson Willie Jackson Brigette James Kim James Sammie James Ellie Mae Jeffrey Susan Jeffords Kyle Jernigan Aretha Johnson Bernard Johnson Natalie Johnson Sherline Johnson Thomas Johnson Lewis Jones Shirley Jones Mitchell Jordan 25 26 Julie Kirby Renee Knighi Allen Lee Shelia Lewis Donnie Lighty Ronnie Lighty Randy Locklair Traci Lookadoo Troy Lyde Connie Mack Angela Marcus Roger Mathis Archie McCall James McCall Terry McCall Betsy McCown Anthony McCoy Melvin McCutcheon Robert McDaniel Johnny McNeil Allen McPhail Edith McPhail Dwayne McQueen Kimberly McRavin David Medford Joanne Miller Mark Mims Vermonica Nettles Pressley Norris Craig Norton Jeanne Norwood Kelly Norwood 27 Tracie Norwood Brad Odom Michael Odom Bobby Parker Pam Perkins John Psillos April Randolph Martha Rhodes Tammy Richardson Alan Robinson Gloria Robinson Tammy Robinson Willie Mae Samuel Jeffrey Sandifer Johnny Sandifer Stephany Satchell 28 Mark Shoe Suzanne Simmons Sharon Singletary Birch Skinner Susie Smallwood Marcie Smith Margie Smith Paul Smith Rcnne Smith Angie Smith Todd Stewart Beth Stokes Angie Stone Georgia Stone Jim Stroud Letha Thompson 29 30 Ricky Thomas Pai Tilton Terri Tomberlin Nina Truett Billy Walton Jamie Weatherford Paul Weatherford Cherelle Weaver Trina Weinberg Belvin West Kim White Traci Wildman Burnetha Williams Calvin Williamson Carl Williamson James Williamson Michael Williamson Patrick Williamson Wayne Wilson Eddie Wirhousky Michael Woodman Jeanne Yarborough Rick Young 31 SElifl BABIES PIISVE Randy Locklair Billy Walton Kim White Pat Tilton Traci Lookadoo Wayne Wilson Traci Wildman Trina Weinberg Terri Tomberlin Jeanne Yarborough Betsy McCown James McCall Paul Weatherford Chcrcllc Weaver Quandcrlyn Mack Renee Knight Archie McCall Bumetha Williams Shirley Jones A PAMHIEB LIFESTYLE Mimi Harrelson Sam Hardee Natalie Johnson Troy Lyde Sylvester Hudson Tammic Harrison 4 Valerie House Daniella Douglas Charles Diaz Wanda Derry Delores Jackson Susan Jeffords Jamie Dunston Charles Dickey Bryan Durant Rose Ellen Davis Mike Defee 33 Aretha Johnson IEMi«B BABIES PURSUE 34 David Cassidy Elizabeth Dickerson Cecil Dutton Terri Duval Pamela Evans Tony Flowers Craig Foster Lisa Gainey Robbie Gainey Rosalind Gattison Dan Hood A PAMPEBK LIFESTYLE Kelly Norwood Craig Norton Mark Mims Pressley Norris Jeanne Norwood Edith McPhail Carrie Black Cindy Blackmon Shelby Blackmon Kim Blackwell Keisha Baird SENiCB BABIES PVBSiE Georgia Stone Angela Andrews John Psillos Saundra Graham Mary Bonnoitt Melvin McCutcheon 36 Gloria Robinson Ronald Boswell Mike Pickrel Mickey Blackmon Billy Garland Harold Brasington Lynn Brown Barbara Griffin Titus Hunter Timothy Hunter Paul Smith Felice T. The Junior class showed how spirited it was by winning the float competition with their theme “The Roof Is On Fire . Powder Puff was a first for the Jr. girls, yet they proved they were a “He-Man group by winning the game 6-2. They were as timid as a Freshman class usually is, but when the first pep rally came, they yelled with all the assurance of an upper class. The Freshman class jumped right into school activities with the building of their homecoming float. They did surprisingly well for a Freshman class by coming in third in the float competition with their theme, “Loving Every Minute Of It.“ They got settled into their classes and learned what high school is all about. Mama Daddy 207 As the year comes to an end, we look back over it and see what we have accomplished. We arc very proud because this year our annual, The Blue Devil, was chosen among the nation’s best by Taylor Publishing Company. It has taken many hours of hard work to put this book together, but when we look back over it. it will transform us back to the old days at SJH. This book is put together with love, laughter, tears, and some frustration. We feel these things give our book the ex- cellence that is present at Saint John’s. As the year ends it is a very sad as well as a very happy time for us. We are sad to be leaving St. John's but also happy that we’ve finally reached a period of maturity . These past years have brought happy times and many trials and tribulations that we had to survive in order to put this yearbook together. This book will always be very special to us — it holds many laughs, cries, and screaming fits; but most of all it holds the memories of our Senior year. If you noticed the game piece is not completed, it is because the “game” is far from over. For the seniors it will continue next year at coHcgc and with many decisions ahead of us. and for the underclassmen it will continue next year at SJH. We have only one piece of advice for you — enjoy it while you can becuase it will soon only be memories. There are five very special people to whom thanks must be given: Mrs. Hayes, our advisor, she was always beside us helping; Ms. Bailey and Ms. Mercer, without their help who knows what would have happened; Mr. Wingate, our sponsor, he made sure we did everything right”; and Mike Smith, our Taylor Publishing Representative, Mike was always there to lend the helping hand”: but our special thanks go to the ’85-’86 Blue Devil Staff. I’ve got to tell Mom I have to explain that it all won’t fit My suitcase is big — but only one or two waves will go inside and I cannot fit all the wonderful times or all of the Senior memories that I have The memories arc all here today Maybe if I could bottle up my thoughts. I could set them up in my college dorm, later And everyone that I love and remember from SJH would be wsith me always, I can’t pack the people cither The ones that I've loved all four years The ones that I’ve only just grown to love I can't take them with me They have to go to their own separate ways to grow and mature. I have to tell Mom That my suitcase is just too small! 208 An adaptation from a poem by Hilda Wriehlson
