1984-85 BLUE DEVIL St. John’s High School Darlington, S.C. Volume 36 Contents Accumulated Interest p. 12 Face Value p. 82 Community Chest p. 150 A Change of Face In the 1984-1985 school year, one of the most obvious changes at St. John’s High is the addition of Mr. Ed Jones as principal. Mr. Jones has been a promi- nent figure at school and during extra- curricular activities throughout the school year. He comes to us after serving as prin- cipal at Aynor High School for 15 years. We are very pleased to welcome him to his first year at St. John’s! 2 TO THE STUDENTS OF ST. JOHN'S: As we begin the 1984-85 school year, let us consider the many new rules and regulations that have been enacted by the legislature and will affect the school lives of all students and teachers. Some of the major factors to be considered are the increased number of units required for graduation, the emphasis placed on attendance and the effort to keep students in school. The new eligibility requirements in- sure the passing of all required subjects before a stu- dent is allowed to participate in any type of extra- curricular activities and, finally, the “time-on-tasks” mandates a minimum of fifty-five minute class periods throughout the day. It has been projected that the “Governor's Package” will increase the educational abilities of our students. Let’s all work together to insure that all students have the opportunity to attain their maximum goals. I will always be available to assist in anyway possible to make your experiences at St. John’s rewarding. It is a new beginning for all of us: let’s make the most of it. 3 A Change of Place With the number of students at St. John's High swelling to 1060 this year, it became necessary to use every square inch of the school for class space. Classes were held where no classes had ever been held before — everywhere from the teacher’s dining room to the Audio-Visual room. Even the cafeteria was used to house study hall. Along with these spacemakers came some necessary changes. The library, under Mrs. Hawkins, the new head librarian, was rear- ranged and the reference section was moved downstairs. Mr. Wright holds class in a redesigned classroom. _ - - The cafeteria addition under construction. 4 Mrs. Keeney’s first period class meets in what was formerly the faculty dining room. Mr. Walker’s first period class meets in the Audio-Visual Room. Teachers and students share the cafeteria in the absence of the faculty dining room this year. ! A Change Of Pace Changes in time were probably the most obvious for most students this year — time spent in class — time spent at lunch, — time spent after school at club meetings — time at assemblies; all were changed drastically from last year to this. Pictures: Top right: Mr. Howell gives a student demerits under the strict new discipline policy. Top left: The old clock ticks away the seconds of a longer class period. Bottom right: Mrs. George works with the new attendance policy. 6 In addition, each student’s individual time was drastically altered, with fewer absences allowed and more time spent in class. Class time was more carefully monitored by the new demerit system. 7 Pictures: Upper left: The Anchor Club at an after-school meeting. Upper right: Students participate in longer class periods. Bottom: Nick Chapman receives An- chor Club Sweetheart Award at one of the few pep rallies held this year. In spite of the shorter lunch periods, longer classes, fewer breaks from class, and all the other changes which took place during the school year, one thing re- mained the same. We were ourselves. We kept old friends and made new ones. We cheered our athletic teams onward and we did our best in our academic pur- suits. We were serious when we had to be and we had fun when we could to make the 1984-85 school year special and unforgettable. 8 Alma Mater The old trees spread their sheltering wings The creek is softly flowing A southern sky looks kindly down A southern breeze is blowing The torch that you have lit for us Our ways will e’er be guiding The lessons you have taught to us Within our hearts abiding. When we go forth at life’s stern call We still shall hear you saying From out the path that duty marks Our feet shall ne’er be straying. Chorus St. John’s dear Alma Mater Beloved from childhood days Distance can ne’er divide us Nor time dull our loyal praise. Our Kind of People... Look on the sidelines at the football games, he’s there. Pop your head inside the attendance office, he’s there. Go watch a varsity basketball practice or game, he’s there. Look in the classroom, the gym, the Driver’s Education car, the baseball field, and he’ll be there. With all these responsibilities and obligations, Coach Jim- my Harrell always manages to have a cheerful, upbeat outlook. Never pessimistic, he always manages to see the good in every person and every situation. For these reasons, the Senior Class is pleased to dedicate the 1985 Blue Devil to Coach Jimmy Harrell. 10 13 WE’LL KEEP THE CHANGE Varsity 3®Zl.lOr ©Et®@I?,= 3L@a.c|,©r§) Theresa Jackson ©©= Whitney Stevens Donna Britton The 1984-85 Varsity Cheerleading Squad has been very active this year. Lack of experience at most key positions was our major concern of the year. The team played hard, and the 9 seniors gave good leadership throughout the year. John Willis in Seniors Survive With Class! Juniors As Freshmen, we were welcomed to the school with Freshmen Orientation. As homecoming came, we built the traditional float with the theme “Let it Whip.” Our spirit was beginning to shine through. When our sophomore year came, we were more familiar with St. John’s. We took first place in the homecoming mural competition with our “King of Pain.” As Juniors, our school spirit is still strong. We placed third in the homecoming float competition and put up a mighty fight in the Powder Puff game. In addition, we sold more magazines than last year’s Junior class. The memories which are captured between the pages of this annual will be very special, because the people involved in the events are very special. There has been a tremendous amount of understanding from those concerned when we had deadlines to meet, and ideas which had to be altered or compromised in order to make this edition of the Blue Devil the best we could make it. I would like to thank our advisor, Ms. Hayes, for putting up with me and supporting me throughout the year. I would also like to thank the members of the staff and photographers for giving so generously of their time and efforts for the good of the annual. I have truly loved this job at times, and I have been very frustrated at times, but when I consider the fond memories I have captured from this experience, to coin the title of a song, “I Wouldn’t Have Missed This for the World.” Thank you for giving me the gift of these memories. They will be cherished for years to come. 151 WE’LL KEEP THE CHANGE Senior Congrats Congratulations Donnie, We Finally Made It! Congratulations Tonya — We Are Proud of You and Happy for You — Your Loving Family, Daddy, Mama, and Mike Congratulations Homeroom 12E! — Mrs. Hayes Congratulations Homeroom 12F! — Mrs. Stevens ITO Congratulations from: Mr. Mrs. Richard G. Williams Sr. Dr. Mrs. James D. Mclnnis Mr. Mrs. Jimmy Tyler Mr. Mrs. S. C. Chapman Congratulations Tina, From this day forth, you are a whole person, complete within yourself, bright and proud and strong. But, forgive me Tina, I must confess, this is not easy for me. It seems years have been far too few since I rocked away your tears. I taught you how to tie your shoes, to read and say your prayers. Though I was never the perfect parent, nor you the perfect child, we always loved each other. I cannot live for you, nor protect you always from this world. I know that if you are to become all that God has planned for you to be, you need some space to spread your wings. So upon your Graduation Day, I give the gift you’ve wanted most, but the hardest one for me. My precious child, with tears upon my cheeks, I set you free!!!
