6 TRAUMA CENTER “The reason for the soaps’ resounding success in winning the teen audience is clear... they offer escapist entertainment featuring young characters with whom teens should like to identify. Psychologist believe that the acute emotional involvement kids have with soap characters runs deep. The soaps allow teen to vicariously encounter situations and emotions that they cannot yet experience themselves: In other words, soaps help them test out their own feeling and future roles.” Seventeen, March 1983 “In my opinion, soap operas are wonderful. I love to watch them. If I wasn’t at school I’d probably be home watching soap operas. My favorite soap is General Hospital. It’s great! It gives you a chance to get out of your‘Hum-Drum’ life. It has adventures and make- believe stories but some of the things you can believe.” Holly Schultz If misery loves company, misery has company enough. Thoreau I do not like soap operas because it is the most boring stuff I’ve ever watched. It is dumb to watch them when I can be doing something else with my time. Robert McDaniel I think that soaps really give children a bad influence. I don’t think children that don’t understand life should watch the soaps, because they might pick up bad habits. Tonya Gainey It just burns me up when the soap operas get really good. Then they put a news report on in the place of it. Naomi Robinson The loss of love is a terrible thing. They lie who say that death is worse. Contee Cullen

John Home “When I was out for summer vacation all I wanted to do was watch this soap opera. I gave up half of my summer activities just so 1 wouldn’t miss an episode.” Tracy Tillman “There are some people that believe in these unrealistic shows. People who watch are taking this in a false sense.” Dwayne Graham “My favorite soap opera is, “As the World Turns.” Since I am a male, I feel kind of funny talking about it. But anyway, I like it because it has a lot of action in it.” Maxie Jacobs “My feelings about soap operas are very strong and personal. I think soap operas are highly distasteful and show a poor quality of American Life.” Marty Watkins “My feeling about the soaps are reserved. During the summer I was bored and didn’t have anything to do, so I watched the soaps. But by the time football came around I didn’t have time to watch anymore.” Tavio Ham “Soap operas can be interesting and entertaining pastimes for people who have free time on their hands. However, the soap opera viewers should use moderation in watching these programs to keep themselves from getting “hooked.” Tami Drawdy “My feeling is that soaps are boring and a waste of people’s time. These soaps cause overweight and many other health problems such as laziness.” Benjamin Robinson “I enjoy watching the Guiding Light because the characters in the show have become a part of my family. I share in their problems and in their happiness. Amy Edwards
