Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1984 volume:

THE BLUE DEVIL ST. JOHN’S HIGH SCHOOL DARLINGTON, S.C. VOL. 35 Contents Search for Tomorrow Young and the Restless Another World As the World Turns Guiding Light Like sands through the hourglass so are The Days of Our Lives LIVING “Almost two million high school students watch General Hospital everyday. Ten years or so ago, soap operas were hardly tempting to teenagers. They were dreary melodrama that featured depressed middle-aged characters engaged in interminable conversation over cups of coffee. Today, daytime serials offer fast-paced, often outrageous, entertainment designed to appeal to teen and young adult viewers.” Seventeen, March 1983 “1 look at soap operas as another way of dealing with life. People have problems and some soap operas explain them. Girls really enjoy them because they have something to talk about at school and women like them because they have something to talk about at school. Women like them because they can gossip about them on the telephone. Men and boys think that they are a waste of time.” Chris Blackmon Love is like a rose, the joy of all the earth. Love is like a lovely rose, the world’s delight. Christina Rossetti “Personally, I think soap operas are really stupid.” Louis Tadlock “Yes, I watch soap operas because 1 can’t seem to get out of watching them. Once you watch them you seem to be in a trance.” Donna Guthrie Yes, loving is a painful thrill, And not to love more painful still; But oh, it is the worst of pain, To love and not be loved again. Anacreon “I don’t know whether soap operas are good or bad. I know that they are a waste of time.” Marc Weatherford The only present love demands is love. John Gay There is no heaven like mutual love. George Granville All love is sweet given or returned . .. They who inspire it most are fortunate, as 1 am now; but those who feel it most are happier still. Shelley Love is love’s reward Dryden Lovers derive their pleasure from their misfortunes Diogenes Love has a thousand ways to please. But more to rob us of our ease. Dryden 2 HEARTBREAK “There is m evidence that soap operas corrupt teenagers’ values or that teess go out aud copy soap characters’ behavior.” Dr. Kenneth W. Houn Hearts live by being wounded. Wilde “I’m thankful we do have soap opera. It’s like they are so real. Once you start watching them you kinda get attached to them. So I just want to say thanks to the person who thought of soap operas.” Tammy Hodge “I do not like soap operas, because they are very silly. When one person gets killed on one show you see them on another one. I hate that about them.” Marvin Lunn A wounded heart is hard to cure. Goethe “What I like the most on the Young and the Restless is all the suspense and drama, and most of all I think Michael Damien, who plays Danny is so gorgeous.” Angie Chandler “I don't especially like soap operas because they are boring. Another reason why I don’t like them is because I could be doing better things. I think that some people get too attached to soap operas. Cindy Kelly The heaviness of the heart breaketh strength .. . take no heaviness to heart. Apocrypha 5 6 TRAUMA CENTER “The reason for the soaps’ resounding success in winning the teen audience is clear... they offer escapist entertainment featuring young characters with whom teens should like to identify. Psychologist believe that the acute emotional involvement kids have with soap characters runs deep. The soaps allow teen to vicariously encounter situations and emotions that they cannot yet experience themselves: In other words, soaps help them test out their own feeling and future roles.” Seventeen, March 1983 “In my opinion, soap operas are wonderful. I love to watch them. If I wasn’t at school I’d probably be home watching soap operas. My favorite soap is General Hospital. It’s great! It gives you a chance to get out of your‘Hum-Drum’ life. It has adventures and make- believe stories but some of the things you can believe.” Holly Schultz If misery loves company, misery has company enough. Thoreau I do not like soap operas because it is the most boring stuff I’ve ever watched. It is dumb to watch them when I can be doing something else with my time. Robert McDaniel I think that soaps really give children a bad influence. I don’t think children that don’t understand life should watch the soaps, because they might pick up bad habits. Tonya Gainey It just burns me up when the soap operas get really good. Then they put a news report on in the place of it. Naomi Robinson The loss of love is a terrible thing. They lie who say that death is worse. Contee Cullen 7 HOPE Bather than mskmg tecas antisocial, soaps Bay actually he the ghte that Mods friendships, because the camaraderie of fwedh( characters’ motivations aad specatatiag what wil happen next is at least half the fna. Seventeen, March 1983 Hope is a thing with feathers That perches in the soul. Emily Dickenson Things past belong to memory alone. Things future are the property of hope. John Home “When I was out for summer vacation all I wanted to do was watch this soap opera. I gave up half of my summer activities just so 1 wouldn’t miss an episode.” Tracy Tillman “There are some people that believe in these unrealistic shows. People who watch are taking this in a false sense.” Dwayne Graham “My favorite soap opera is, “As the World Turns.” Since I am a male, I feel kind of funny talking about it. But anyway, I like it because it has a lot of action in it.” Maxie Jacobs “My feelings about soap operas are very strong and personal. I think soap operas are highly distasteful and show a poor quality of American Life.” Marty Watkins “My feeling about the soaps are reserved. During the summer I was bored and didn’t have anything to do, so I watched the soaps. But by the time football came around I didn’t have time to watch anymore.” Tavio Ham “Soap operas can be interesting and entertaining pastimes for people who have free time on their hands. However, the soap opera viewers should use moderation in watching these programs to keep themselves from getting “hooked.” Tami Drawdy “My feeling is that soaps are boring and a waste of people’s time. These soaps cause overweight and many other health problems such as laziness.” Benjamin Robinson “I enjoy watching the Guiding Light because the characters in the show have become a part of my family. I share in their problems and in their happiness. Amy Edwards Jlie Senior Hit dedicated Ohe Blue lev'll 84 to YIJr. Uddwciyne J4owell 10 bedicati on The following remark was overheard in the teacher’s lounge. “We are sure going to miss this class. They are going to be hard to replace.” Let it be known that the Senior class returns the same feelings to the person who said this. Farewell From the To the Administration, Faculty, and Fellow Students: We the members of the Senior Class of 1984 would like to take this time to say “so long” as we walk beyond the doors of St. John’s High School. The four years that we were here have completely changed our lives from the time we entered as freshmen to the time we graduated. We began by being very enthusiastic and full of determination. We were the first freshman class to win the float competition at homecoming and we won it again our Junior year. We were voted the most spirited class on numerous occasions. Our vivacious spirit was shown during the many inner school and extra-curricular actions. To add to our excitement our football squad became conference champs for the first time in many years. Although we were defeated in the second round of the play-offs, the season will linger in the minds of many for years to come. Because we were determined to become winners, we prepared to have the only Homecoming Dance in many years. Greater recognition was brought to our school by many, but none so as great as the work of William Dubose, James Wilson, Maxie Jacobs, and Jay Yarborough. These along with many others showed their athletic abilities by being members of the North South Allstar game, Pee Dee Area Coaches Team, and almost totally dominating the Pee Dee Area Players of the week. Because of the work mentioned above we will have no doubt of the success in our other athletic teams. 156 Class of 1984 While some of us were busy at athletics others were doing wonderful in other areas. As Sambra Redick became a National Merit Semi-Finalist, Keysha Ross won second place in the National Latin Examination. John Warford and Dee Dee Morris proved their success as they became the State National Honor Society President and Treasurer. Karen Synder and Marshall Bacote showed their talent in hosting the 6th District Student Council Rally here at St. John’s by being elected the Chairperson and Vice Chairman. The class also produced its very own Miss Darlington, Tammy Needham. Our excellence in academics as well as athletics proved us to be one of the best classes to enter and leave SJH. We all know that without the help of the administration and faculty none of this could have been accomplished. We would like to thank you for all the information and the time you have provided us with. As we depart we would like to say to all underclassmen “never quit, for life is just a continuous stairway with obstacles that can be over- come.” Now that we have departed we need not say any more, for our accomplishments have shown the wonderful work of the “Class of 1984.” Sincerely, Senior Class of 1984 157 ‘Go ahead Karla, you do it. I’ll smile and throw her off. Hopefully, you'll never have to see the world this way. Last year, though, in South Carolina over 1200 people did. And almost half of them were Black. Some were mothers or fathers who left behind children. Others were children themselves—kids who will never get to run and play with the rest of their friends. Just because they were hit by a car. It's sad because you can make sure it doesn't happen to you. Watch out for cars. Wait for the light. Look both ways. Be careful of walk- ing in the roadway at night. And always remem- ber this: your safety is up to you. There's a lot of good things in life to enjoy. Being hit by a car can end them all. Little did I know that these and many other questions would be facing me every day when I took the responsibility of being Editor. I could never have accomplished it without the help of the 1983-84 staff and the guidance of Ms. McCauley and Mrs. Boston. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to work with. I would also like to thank the faculty and the student body for their cooperation and for giving me the opportunity to collect the memories of the 1983-1984 school year.
