THE BLUE DEVIL St. John’s High School Darlington, S.C. Vol. 34 The eyes are the windows to the souls, the revealer of our hearts Guillaume Du Bartas If I accept the sunshine and warmth I must also accept the thunder and lightning I The dreams of today are the realities of tomorrow. The Devil’s most devilish when respected. Elizabeth Barrett Browning Castles in the air they’re so easy to take refuge in. So easy to build, too. Henry Ibsen The spirit shall be that vital breath that allows our victory or our defeat. 9 Homecoming ’82 The dreary weather did not dampen the spirit of the Devils, as they went on to capture a homecoming victory defeating the Bennettsville Gremlins 18-7. Touchdowns were made by Todd Harrell, Kevin Sturgeon, and William Dubose. Miss Sherry Skinner, sponsored by Kevin Pickrel was crowned Homecoming Queen and Miss Toni Smothers sponsored by Billy Pace was named Football Sweetheart during the halftime activities. As we matured, our devotion to you did also. To us, you represented the person we could look up to, the person we could wish to be. Your victories became ours, your losses, our awn. As our paths continued to cross, they soon became one. Along that path you have nurtured us as seedlings to insure our growth in the world. Now as graduation approaches, we only hope that our growing branches provide shade for you as you have provided the warmth for us to grow. Your embodiment of life, honor, love, and devotion are reflective of your high standards which will hold a place in our hearts always. You have truly shown us the St. Johns spirit. After a rewarding ex- perience at Appalachain State College where they won many ribbons, the Varsity was ready to take on all challengers at competition. The first opportunity came at the Southeastern Regionals where their outstanding performance again made them eligible for the nationals held at Williamsburg. After a busy football and basketball season, making posters, leading pep rallies and building school spirit, they again found themselves competing against the best at Carowinds. It’s during our senior year that the Blue Devils' football season, for the first time in quite a while, had 8-2 record which sent us to the playoffs. It started our Senior year off beautifully. This followed with senior pictures, supplies. Homecom- ing, dedication, superlatives, and graduation. All we’ve looked forward to and now lived through. It went too fast, too soon. If only we could do it again, only this time better and more slowly. The class of '83, we Seniors, reflect back on our victories: Most Spirited Class, 80-81 and 81-82; Homecoming Float, 81-82; Un- disputed Powder Puff Champions, two years straight; and top magazine sales in our Junior year. Now we can only remember how good it is to have been a Senior at SJH. In our later years the spirit, the Alma Mater, the love, will still course through our veins and bring a gentle smile of remembrance to our faces. When Homecoming came, we took first place in the float competition with the theme, “The Devil Made Us Do It.” Throughout the year, the school had a most- spirited class contest. We took 2nd place to the class of '83. As Sophomores, we were more familiar with SJH. We tied with the Seniors as runner up in float competition. Our theme was “Celebration.’' Presently, the Junior class is going strong. We took first in float competition this year with the theme “You’re an Outlaw Gremlin.” We ordered our class rings and played in the Junior-Senior Powder Puff game. Unfortunately we lost 8-6. However, we made up for it by breaking the previous junior magazine sales record. They have added their talents to the marching band football teams and the J.V. cheerleading squad. They started out slow in the Pep rallies but soon came alive when they found out what St. John’s was all about. The freshmen really took part in the homecoming festivities by building their traditional float. The theme was “Let It Whip.” Even though they placed third in the float competition it was one of the best freshman floats ever built. As students we have completed a vital part of our education; as adults we have learned to continue on our own and make a life of our own. At its best is how I’ve seen St. Johns this year. The football and basketball seasons were but one example of our great successes but one of the greatest accomplishments I’ve seen was the singlehanded construction of this “book” by the annual staff that you have before you now. This yearbook is the result of hard work, laughter, and frustration. The students of St. Johns put this “book” together. This “book” will hold memories that we will never forget as long as we live. It contains the vital spirit of St. Johns that is in us all. Without it, we might forget the happiness of it all. I'd like to thank our advisor, Ms. McCauley, for all her supportive help when it was most needed; Mr. Wingate, our sponsor, and Mike Smith, our Taylor Publishing Co. representative. Without you it would have just been another staff and another yearbook. But the outcome was not just a yearbook. It was The Blue Devil, our yearbook. Sincerely, Angie McDaniel (Editor) 200 I
