The memories will remain in our minds forever. 15 TIME, Fall 1982 EXCITEMENT BEGINS! Homecoming 1981 was a very exciting and event-filled week. Although the Blue Devils suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Lake City Panthers, the events of the previous week were filled with true St. John's Spirit. The Yearbook Staff sponsored a Spirit Chain won by the Juniors. The Pep Club sponsored a Mystery Football Player contest. On Thursday afternoon, while the players were still at football practice, the Varsity Cheerleaders went to each player's house and put up “Good Luck signs in their yards. Although the gym floor was not yet completed, a fabulous Homecoming Pep Rally was still possible! The cheerleaders presented a skit, “Short People.” and the Key and Anchor club sweethearts were announced. But alas, a Devil victory was not to be. At the end of the half, the Devils left for the locker room, trailing 6-0. Half-time activities were highlighted by the announce- ment of the Football Sweetheart, Carol Sherron, and the Crowning of the Homecoming Queen, Virginia White. The Juniors were awarded first prize in the float com- petition. The Lake City Panthers scored once again in the second half. Robert Hankins ran a touchdown for the Blue Devils in the last five minutes of the game. The final score was Lake City 12, SJ H 6. Virginia White was crowned 1981 Homecoming Queen. The students are very intent on keeping the old ways of St. John’s. I think the most beautiful is May Day. When our Senior class has long been gone, I know that the sense of tradition will still remain. Marishka Wirhousky 36 During my four years at St. John's I have learned many things. First, I have learned self respect and independence. For example, I realize that if you don’t respect yourself, no one will. Secondly, I have learned what to expect in that Big World that awaits me. Because of St. John's and the things I have learned here I feel that I am ready for the future. It was a close brutal game, but the Junior class managed to stay on top with a 14-12 victory over the Seniors. The Seniors began the game with a touchdown on the second play made by Frosteen Brown. The extra point was missed. The Juniors pulled together their offense and Ann Lowder caught a ten yard pass to even up the game. The extra points were made by Kim Strickland and at the half Juniors led 8 to 6. The Junior girls returned to the field after half-time to once again prove their skill for another six points. The extra point was missed, so the game ended with a Junior 14-12 victory. At the half Ronnie Anderson, sponsored by Ginger McKelvey, captured the 1981 Powder Puff Crown. The group of 13 girls spent a long, hard sum- mer preparing for the toughest cheerleading camp on the East Coast, “CSC,” at Appalachian State in Boone, North Carolina. The squad perform- ed extremely well there, tying for fourth place in the final competition and bringing home three blue ribbons, and a spirit stick. They also made a lasting impression on the other squads at camp with en- thusiasm and friendliness. Back home in Dodge, the cheerleaders fanned the flames of St. Johns spirit and kept it burning high through the foot- ball season despite not having the gym available for Pep Rallies. On November 14, they par- ticipated in the Atlantic Coast Regional Cheerleading Cham- pionships, a national competi- tion that featured the Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky squads, plus Top High School Cheerleading Squads from South Carolina, and North Carolina, too. Keeping very elite company, the SJH Squad finished in the top eight of the tournament by showing an in- credible amount of composure and calmness under a great deal of pressure. They won a gold superior ribbon for their performance. First Row: Sherry Skinner. Second Row: Ginger Stone, Teresa Hankins, Katherine Bristow, Toni Smothers. Kim Strickland, Virginia White. During the summer, they started off by taking fourth place in the JV division at one of the toughest cheerleading camps around. A lot of hard work, practice and dedication led to their superb performance at camp. Then, on October 10th, the squad really showed their form by making the “Final Ten” at the “Carowinds JV Cheerleading Championships,” the biggest JV competition in the Atlantic Coast area. Being selected as one of the Ten Best Squads out of 52 who competed was quite an honor. 120 Co-Caplains — Karen Snyder.
