THE 1980 BLUE DEVIL VOL. XXXI St. John's High Darlington, S.C. 29532 7:30A.M. and Counting 7:30 — Students begin arriving for a routine school day. 8:00 — Teachers, burdened with papers, eagerly anticipate schol- arly pursuits. 8:30 — The enthusiasm to begin the day is obvious in the mad rush to first period. 9:18 — The 4 minute rush — kin to the 4 minute mile in its fervor. 10:25 — The students find the mid-morning break a welcomed relief from grueling class sched- ules. 12:00— LUNCH TIME!!! 1:15 — Back at work after lunch, it's hard to concentrate on a full stomach. 2:30— That 7th period class seems to be the longest! 3:00— The Exodus begins ... 3:05 — and continues. 2 ing are accustomed to say lhal tht truth makes men tree. It does nothing of the kind. It is the knowledge of the' truth that cre- ates freedom. Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you tree. We are now at the stage where the main emphasis must be laid on the dissemination of the truth. We need as we have never needl'd a campaign of education, with men and women going hither and thither in a great lecture cam- paign, weaving itself across this nation like a weaver's shuttle. We need a baptism of the right kind of literature, periodicals, and truth carrying messages that will make the people of the nations and the rest of the world sit up and take notice. We have reached the place where we can no longer take the defensive: we must once again resume the offensive. The col- leges, universities, and high schools, with the three millions of young men and women in those institutions, who are to take their place in the life of the nation just a few years hence, are the laboratory where truth must be demon- strated. — Ernest H. Cherrington. A Time to Succeed He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul; who has never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who has looked for the best in others and given the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; whose memory is a benediction. — Mrs. A. |. Stanley. 6 A Time to Experience EXPERIENCE TEACHES — It is not enough to have books, or to know where to read up for information when we want it. Practical wisdom for the purposes of life must be carried about with us, and be ready for use at call. It is not enough that we have a fund laid up at home, but not a farthing in our pocket: we must carry about with us a store of the current coin of knowledge ready for exchange on all occasions, else we are help- less when the opportunity for action occurs. The experience gathered from books is of the nature of learning; the experience gained from actual life is of the nature of wisdom; and a small store of the latter is worth vastly more than any stock of the former. —Smiles. 8 The Main Thing in Life Is Not to be Afraid to be Human P. Cassals A man should never be ashamed to own that he has been in the wrong, which is but saying in other words that he is wiser today than he was yesterday. —Alexander Pope. The man who makes no mistakes lacks boldness and the spirit of adventure. He is the one who never tries anything new; he is the brake on the wheels of progress. So, do not spend your time regret- ting mistakes, but get up and hit the line twice as hard. You will never succeed beyond the mistake to which you are willing to surren- der. Remember, a mistake becomes an error only when noth- ing is done to correct it. —Unknown. The man who makes no mistakes does not usually make anything. —Edward |ohn Phelps. If you make mistakes, at least make a different one each time. —Unknown. to iHliliSl min Hid A Time to Reflect REFLECTION — The man who thinks, reads, studies, and medi- tates has intelligence cut in his features, stamped on his brow, gleaming in his eyes, and sooner or later the face tells the status or the condition of the soul — a reflection of the divinity within the man. —Record. 12 A Year Not Unlike Past Years... but Unique Because It's Ours! This is a year in the lives of St. lohn's students. A year that's important because it's worth remembering. A collection of events, faces, and places... Astoryof the times — ourtimes; And the styles that make it ours. But most of all, it's a story of the people... 'Cause it's the people that make St. lohn's High. This year is not so different from previous years ... But unique because it's ours! Is There Life After School? It seems impossible that all of the energy of S)H students would be confined within the walls of the school. When the dismissal bell rings, the kinetic energy of S)H students unleashes on an unsus- pecting community. The grocery stores, department stores, hard- ware stores, hospitals, service sta- tions, farms, automotive supply stores and pharmacies benefit from the assistance of our stu- dents. This involvement in the working world provides an insight into the pressures of the adult world. The contributions made to the com- munity reflect the promise of future business leaders. t N 16 17 A TIME FOR PEOPLE A TIME FOR PEOPLE A TIME FOR PEOPLE A TIME FOR PEOPLE A TIME FOR PEOPLE A TIME FOR PEOPLE A TIME FOR PEOPLE A TIME FOR PEOPLE A TIME FOR PEOPLE A TIME FOR PEOPLE DEDICATION — DR. ROBERT R. HITCH — When we, the class of 1980, step- ped into the halls of St. John's High, we were greeted by many teachers, friends, and strangers. Through the years, one faculty member has stood out from all the rest. We have experi- enced the humor and discipline of this person. The dedication and respect shown to us have helped to shape our lives. His winning smile and his knowledge of subject matter blended with a subtle sophistication are a pleasing combination. In deepest appreciation for six years of service, we the senior class dedicate the 1980 BLUE DEVIL to you — Dr. Robert Hitch. Si. John's Homecoming, a huge success this year, encompassed the entire week. Events included: a poster contest, a candy guessing contest, a mystery player contest, and the cutest football and cheer- leader baby picture contest. The varsity squad tried extremely hard but could never quite get it all together against the much larger teams they faced. Under the direction of the Blue Devil coaching staff, the team had three victories, which included one against power-house York, with most of the other games being lost by only a few points. During the season, our team scored a total of 160 points while holding their opponents to 169 points. The experience and leadership of the seventeen seniors on the team will be sorely missed next year. The whole team, though, is to be commended on their team spirit and effort. 102 t 1. Each boy was approved by the teachers and then he per- formed in front of Dr. Eads for final approval. Tom Greer advised the boys on stunts and tricks to do with the girls, giving school spirit an extra boost. Among the tricks they per- formed were flips, the low bird and towering stunts done with the girls. Tony Moore, Leon Epps, Wayne Parnell, Ken McRae, and Alex Isaac were the five new additions to the cheer- leading squad. 1 Male Cheerleaders: (L lo R): Wayne Parnell, Tony Moore, Ken McRae. This year competition with teams, such as Bennettsville, Cheraw, and South Florence, has increased the ability of each of the players. Each member of the golf team has helped each other to strenghten the team. Although the team's performance was not as outstanding as they would have liked, their opponents felt that they were no pushover! With their multi-talents, the golf team holds a promising future. 1. Coach — Dennis West 2. Craig Willis 3. Team (L to R) Dennis West, Charles Wat- son, Craig Willis, Clint Davis, Stacey Skin- ner St. John's MVP for the golf team was Clint Davis. Clint, who played phenomenally all through the regular season, had the opportunity for more outstanding play. Dr. Eads, who is with the Optimist Club of America, entered Clint in a tournament in Greenville, S.C. He placed first in the eighteen hole course, which sent the promising golfer on his way to San Diego, California. There he com- peted with young men from various sections of America, as well as those from the Philippines, Samaria, and other countries of the world. The event took place at Torrey Pines, Home of the Andy Williams' San Diego Open. There were more than six hundred entries with seventy-two holes played. The PCA paid for Clint's travel and recreation. He visited Los Angeles, Atlanta, Disney World, and Mexico during his trip. We are proud to have had someone from St. John's to have such an exciting experience. 1. Stacey Skinner 2. Charles Watson 3. Based on per- formance, the squad was awarded a blue ribbon, and two red ribbons. Based on spirit, the team was awarded the Dynamite Stick. As an award for excellence in all categories, the cheerleaders were named Best All Around Squad. The students and faculty appreci- ate the enormous effort put forth by the 1979-80 cheerleaders, and we are sure that the success of the team will continue for many years. Empowered by Mrs. Claudia Robbins, the staff tried to capture the special events that made this school year one of the best. We hope this book will prove to be a collection of the achievements, both aca- demic and athletic and that each picture will be a reminder of a friend or occasion that meant a lot to you. Our fine photography staff was led by Mr. Tom Brennon. This group captured a year of learning and laughing in pic- tures. We are sure you will like what you see.
