The Features and Honors Section of a yearbook is a very important section today; howev- er, it hasn’t always been that way. It was only in 1955 that attention was even given to the Features of the Student Body. The section was entitled Activities” and it in- cluded; Homecoming, May Court, and Mardi Gras (Junior-Senior), along with all clubs and sports. In 1956, the section, still called Activities”, included everything as in 1955 and also Miss Blue Dev- il. By 1957, though, the title had been changed to Features” and contained: Homecoming, May Court, Senior Superlatives and Special Awards. Today, the section, Features and Honors, contains all of the pageants, awards, and honors of the school. It is important be- cause it shows the ability and de- termination for achievement pos- sessed by the students at St. John's. The division, itself, has grown from a mere one-page collage to a twenty-four page section. The pageants, scholastic awards, football events, spring festivals and yearbook dedications are all a part of St. John's High. The Features and Honors” segment tries to capture the thrill, excit- ment, work, and fun that go into a school year at St. John’s High.

Mr. Otto Wingate came to St. John’s High in 1969. He taught math until the 1976-77 school year. He then became assistant principal. He re- ceived his B.A. degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. and his M.Ed. degree from South Carolina State College in Orange- burg, S.C. Mr. Wingate is married to the former Lucia Ross and they have two daughters, Kim and Tanya. We are very happy to dedicate this special edition — the last of the 70’s — to you, Mr. Otto Wingate. 17
