Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1979 volume:

Having had a year to settle into the new school, the St. John's student body has been able to let their spirit and to- getherness show with an in- tense force. Enthusiasm has flowed through the school in sports, spirit, scholastics and clubs. Through our activities, St. John’s personality has evolved. If You Have SPIRIT [ Sqn down htrg: ■' 4- - w 4 5 JAMS UP! AND TO THE POLL O o o The end of the Seventies has been a very exciting period for the students here at St. John’s. The end of the decade represents a time of reflection for us to re- member those things that were an important part of our discus- sions and daily interests. Realiz- ing that it is so easy to forget what is presently important to us, we present our thoughts and pref- erences as students here at St. John’s High School in 1979. St. John's students make significant contributions to the colleges and universi- ties throughout the state. Academic achievement is recognized through our Na- tional Honor Society chapter, Honor Roll selections, and various scholarship awards. We take pride in the scholastic accomplish- ments of our student body. 10 12 13 r dttUiiyi the 0%0 iQ 1979 The Features and Honors Section of a yearbook is a very important section today; howev- er, it hasn’t always been that way. It was only in 1955 that attention was even given to the Features of the Student Body. The section was entitled Activities” and it in- cluded; Homecoming, May Court, and Mardi Gras (Junior-Senior), along with all clubs and sports. In 1956, the section, still called Activities”, included everything as in 1955 and also Miss Blue Dev- il. By 1957, though, the title had been changed to Features” and contained: Homecoming, May Court, Senior Superlatives and Special Awards. Today, the section, Features and Honors, contains all of the pageants, awards, and honors of the school. It is important be- cause it shows the ability and de- termination for achievement pos- sessed by the students at St. John's. The division, itself, has grown from a mere one-page collage to a twenty-four page section. The pageants, scholastic awards, football events, spring festivals and yearbook dedications are all a part of St. John's High. The Features and Honors” segment tries to capture the thrill, excit- ment, work, and fun that go into a school year at St. John’s High. Dedication A quiet leader ... a guiding ir fluence ... a counselor and frien ... an ever present source o strength and understanding .... center of stability in our hectic lives. Now that we are ending our final year at S.J.H. he is still sup- porting us. The initial affection re mains, but the friendship ha grown much deeper. This is wh- we, the class of 1979, dedicate the 1979 Blue Devil to you, M . Otto Wingate. Mr. Otto Wingate came to St. John’s High in 1969. He taught math until the 1976-77 school year. He then became assistant principal. He re- ceived his B.A. degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. and his M.Ed. degree from South Carolina State College in Orange- burg, S.C. Mr. Wingate is married to the former Lucia Ross and they have two daughters, Kim and Tanya. We are very happy to dedicate this special edition — the last of the 70’s — to you, Mr. Otto Wingate. 17 Homecoming 1978 Unlike the usual football game, tonight the con- cern lies with halftime and the crowning of the 1978 Homecoming Queen. As the second quarter draws to a close, the attendants prepare for the parade onto the field. The band begins its march and silence sweeps through the audience. Smiling young hope- fuls take their assigned positions. The suspense was unbearable and, finally, everyone was relieved when Miss Jennie Lee Holloman was announced Home- coming Queen 1978. A feeling of suspense hung over the audience, as well as the contestants. The evening was an enjoy- able one for everyone in at- tendance. Sponsored by the annual staff, the Miss Blue Devil Pageant was completely successful. It seemed the winner, Ivy Adams, was the last to realize that her name had been called. Melissa McCown re- ceived the award for talent as well as receiving the title of 1st runner up. The Spirit Committee was formed to pro- mote more school spirit. This group decorated the bulletin board in the lobby for National Education Week. They also had a very active Homecoming Com- mittee. They worked very hard to make Homecoming '78 a very en- joyable evening. A Constitution Revision Committee was formed to discuss changes needed in the Constitution. ■ro$S, S Miller. R Willoughby. A majority of activities at St. John’s was promoted by the Stu- dent Council. Among these are Homecoming, Mr. Miss St. John’s, Boy Girl Senior of the Month, Pie Eating Contest, and many more. The reason the Stu- dent Council accomplished so much this year, was they had very active members. Every member of the Student Council was involved in at least one activ- ity. Florence 22-0 and Central of Pageland 16-15. Many of the Devils’ opponents were ranked very high in the state but the Devils, with school and team spirit, played tough and close games. Look for the team to come back to a winning tradition next year. 42 43 J.V. Football The St. John's J.V. Blue Imps finished their season in a tie for the Conference Championship with Lugoff-Elgin and had an outstanding re- cord of G-l-1. The only defeat was to Chesterfield in a very close game. Coach Mike Stokes was very pleased with this year’s team and hopes fot another successful season next year. St. John's J.V. verses: W. After two weeks of Powder Puff practice, the Junior and Senior girls were enthusiastic about the big game and anxious to see which team would come out on top. Once on the field, the realization of the game ahead led each girl to give her best effort. Winning was the main goal for each team. The only score of the game came in the second quarter, when Jr. half back Deanna Warsaw took a pitch out at the 20 yard line from quarter back Jane Council. During half time activities Ms. Val Baldwin, spon- sored by Kelly Anderson, was crowned the 1978 Pow- der Puff queen, for the third consecutive year. The second half was inconsistent for both teams. The Sr. offense, lead by Terri Weaver, fought hard but found it impossible to score against the Jr. defense. When the clock finally ran out, the Juniors were on top 6-0. Seated (L to R) D. Warsaw, G. Under the guidance of Coach Morrison, the team ended the season with a 6-8 record. This year was the first year that the Conference Tournament was hosted by a St. John's High team. In the Tournament, Juniors. Lila Helms and Sara Psillos won the Flight number 3 match in doubles. At the State Tournament, held in Columbia, a few singles players and the doubles team of Beth White and Deanna Freeman made it to the quarter finals. Out of 12 players, 9 of them will be returning next year hoping for a better season. 50 St. John’s 9-0 Lugoff-Elgin St. John’s 2-7 Dillion St. John’s 1-8 Dillion St. John’s 6-3 Myrtle Beach St. John's 1-8 Cheraw St John's 9-0 Wilson St. John’s 5-4 South Florence St. John’s 1-8 Myrtle Beach St. John’s 0-9 Hartsville St. John's 4-5 South Florence St. John's 1-8 Hartsville St. John's 4-5 Cheraw St. John s 9-0 Wilson St John’s 6-3 Lugoff-Elgin 51 Boys Varsity Basketball St. John’s Versus Hartsville Marion South Florence Marion Darlington County Christmas Tournament Hartsville South Florence Chesterfield Chesterfield Lugoff-Elgin Andrew Jackson Bennettsville Fort Mill Cheraw Clover The Blue Devils had a long and hard-fought season this year. With 3 starters back from last year and only a few new members on the team, everyone was pretty well organized. Opening the season with a 43-40 win over our rival Hartsville, this victory gave us the confi- dence we need to win many more games. De- spite the fact that there are unexperienced play- ers on the team, they are learning fast and will soon fit right in with the rest of the team. In the Christmas tournament this year we also had victories over Rosenwald and Lamar to get to the finals, but were defeated by Butler to take second place in the tournament. Although our conference is going to be a long and hard one, we feel very confident of a strong, winning sea- son. Cheerleaders Show Spirit!! For the six varsity cheer- leaders, summer hours were filled with learning and perfecting both old and new cheers. In August, they received much coveted the spirit award. Each day of the academic year they transport fellow students to and from school. The job is a difficult one because busses sometimes break down, riders often misbe- have and back roads sometimes become ankle deep in mud. Bus drivers must leave home earlier in the morning and arrive home late. Drivers, however, can take satis- faction in knowing that they pro- vide much needed service for per- forming this important job well. DECA II is a very active club, having taken trips to Columbia and Charlotte, as well as sponsor- ing the DE store at the Career Center. The club is an integral part of Distributive Education, stressing the social, civic and leadership skills that are so im- portant in the world of marketing and fashion. Beginning the year with an In- stallation Luncheon, the club is now making plans for the annual Employer-Employee Banquet at the end of the school year. Row 1: (L to R) Charles Thomas. David Kelly. The last play, entitled A Touch of Death”, was an original play written by Steve Craft and Dean Campbell. Coach Singletary — Advisor Pride is an important part of the Block SJ Club. To be eligible for membership in this organiza- tion, one must have earned a let- ter in one of the nine high school sports; included are the Varsity Cheerleaders. No wonder these students are proud; it isn't often an individual must prove himself before acquiring admittance to an organization. The Block SJ raises money to reward outstanding athletes with letters, sweaters, and jackets for participating ath- letics. Above all, Block SJ im- plants within its members the im- portance of portraying dignity and sportsmanship in all aspects of life. Officers (L to R) Glenn Huggins — V-pres..
